Apple Releases 4th Gen iPod

Finally... my 40 gigger turned up today 🙂

No obvious cosmetic blemishes. I'll test for any audio problems tonight.

I also got confirmation, at last, that Apple are sending me the remote and case for free.

I was so close to bailing out on this deal today!
 
arrrgh...

note from Apple, saying shipment date has been pushed back to the 6th of August. Anyone else in UK still waiting? I ordered on the afternoon of release, and this will be over 3 weeks wait.
 
Yeah, mine got delayed again, this time to August 10th. I finally got fed up and called Apple to cancel my order, but the guy says that the order is "being processed" and therefore can't be canceled at this stage, though I could refuse the package once it comes to return it. He also said they would reduce the price by $15 to $374 from my already student discounted price of $389 (the retail price in Canada is $429) so I agreed to give it another day or two.
 
Sorry to hear that Cheat, I guess I was very lucky to have my iPod ship. Now I just have to wait until this long weekend is over. 😎
 
Just got my 40GB today. No scratches or anything, and there doesn't seem to be any interference when the hard-drive is whirring up etc. Just the normal low "hiss" which is there all the time, regardless of whether the hard-drive is spinning up or not. Hardly noticeable though.

One thing I did notice, is that while my backlight (which nicely fades in and out - a nice feature from my 1G! Also like the Music game...) is sort of a very light shade of purple, my text is still black, not blue as documented.

What are other peoples' like?
 
I've also upgraded from a 1G.

My 4G 40GB also has a light purple backlight, with black text. No audio problems. The sound quality when using the dock's line out to my amp/B&W speakers is excellent IMO. I haven't heard any hissing noises, but I'm going to do more in depth listening tests later.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how much thinner, and nicer to hold, this model is compared to my 1G 10GB. I was wondering whether I should have gone for the even thinner 20GB, but the 40GB is fine for size.
 
Hey i'm new to the iPod, had been saving up for one (poor student) when i heard about the 4G, so i ordered it last sunday (25/07). I also ordered the Griffin mic. Since the mic was supposed to take 8 days and the iPod 3-7 i ordered both seperately.(so that my iPod wouldn't be withheld)
3 days and my mic turned up, infuriatingly, after being shipped at 05.20 on the 27th, my tracking on the mac website still says the collection was picked up, but nothing more.

I am pissed that i payed extra for the 2 shipments, only to have an accessory but no iPod, anyone have any idea when i can expect it?
 
I'm still waiting for apple to ship mine. I've just had a call from a friend who's in Micro Anvika, and they have them... I've told him to get me one... cant wait any longer...

When the apple one finally arrives I'm going to stick it straight on ebay and keep the accessories.

Not impressed that I ordered less than two hours after launch and I can now go to a retail shop and get an ipod faster than apple can send it to me. Its the last time I order from the apple store. 😡

Too true, i phoned them up this morning and had the rudest man in the world on the other end - I was very civilised too. He told me some crap about shipped form Thailand-are they walking or something?
I completely agree with you Moogman, altohugh i think apple would be ok if they use a better courier.

I'm not sure if it works differently in Scottland but in the US I placed everything on the same order and it all shipped at different times/days throughout the course of the order.

They've never shipped it all at once for me. Everything was in a different box except for the headphones/case.
 
What about 4G accessories?

I was over at the ipodlounge dot com and found a nifty tale on the iskins vs (censored) battle.
But iSkins states not compatible with 4th Generation ipods.

What else isn't compatible with 4G iPods?

Lastly, what is recommended advice for FM transmitter(Griffin?) to car and cig-power adaptor (Belkin?)

I know if I get the 20G model, I'l lhave more music and regret not getting the additional 20G for $100 more. 😉
 
I dont know if its anything to do with TNT, from what I have seen once they actually leave Apple they are delivered pretty quick.

I think the problem is Apples logistics department massively under estimate the number of orders they are going to get and so when the orders come in they dont have the people to cope and orders get delayed.

Plus, how come our american friends can order an iPod on overnight delivery via FedEx... and actually get it!?!?!?
 
Yes! Exactly, TNT should be replaced by FedEx, problem solved. Instead of arsing around in motorway service stations!

Oh yeah, trekkie it said on the website all items would be withheld and sent together. I guess again *sigh* the US cares more for its customers than the UK.
 
possibly... although I have never had any problems with TNT. The biggest problem I can see at the minute is that it takes Apple over two weeks to ship an item that they are selling as "Available Immediately"

and, thats two weeks and counting... cos they still havent shipped!
 
THIS JUST IN...

My iPod has just departed Holland at long last for Aberdeen! Hopefully this means it should be delivered tomorrow! Fingers crossed. Yeah i suppose this is my first problem with TNT, i just don't like blaming Apple cos i like them 😉
 
meh... mine still says "Ship on or before 27/07/2004"

the last email i had from them said it would ship on or before the 30th... and talking to them on the phone prior to that email arriving I was 4th August for shipping.

I dont care anymore... I get my Micro Anvika special tomorrow morning. When apple finally do deliver I'll sell it straight on.
 
🙁 It sucks you should have to do that. God haven't they even offered you any compensation or anything? Free stuff?
What you getting from the Micro Anvika website then?
 
I doubt whether I'll get anything out of them, they are still apparently honouring the free case and remote offer.. but we shall see when they deliver.

Its not coming from the MA website, a friend was in the store today and picked one up for me... he's bringing it into work tomorrow 😀
 
😡 Yet again, let down. Didn't come today, even tho it arrived in Aberdeen. Now i am just getting pissed off. 😡

But think how GOOD you're going to feel when you get it.

My new iPod arrived a week ago. Everything works!

Unfortunately, a funeral pulled me out of town and I had to wait a week before I could open the package. The music from the 'Pod is making me feel better. Hang in there, you're going to feel a lot better, too. 🙂
 
Damn.

Well we just called up TNT and some guy told us that they had shipped it to the wrong address! We were supposed to receive our iPods today, instead we found out that it's being shipped here on Friday (when we will be abroad) and at our door by Tuesday.
I think the service is pathetic. 😡
 
Harsh. I know what you mean. I have to go visit my parents on saturday for a few days, was hoping to take my iPod with me, so it better arrive by then.

I still haven't phoned TNT but i think i might later today. I checked the tracking and there is no change form 2 days ago. My iPod is now 2 days overdue and by this point i could have just gotten one form the shops. I don't know who to blame, Apple or TNT but poor show to both. 😡
 
I'm afraid to say that I've given up waiting...

As you know my friend was getting me one from MicroAnvika... well.. I've got it... and its awesome... its certainly worth waiting for 😀

Apple still havent shipped mine. I have been told verbally before today that it will definitely ship on or before the 4th of August. I'll give them a ring on Friday I think.

The infuriating thing is MicroAnvika's apple order number is only 3300 below mine. I find it unbelieveable that Apple cant ship 3000 iPods a day.

People who have received their iPods, what was your order number?
 
Weeeeell, i've just been on the TNT website because a *NEW* tracking number had been given to me on Apple's webite. Apparently TNT are supposed to be picking the shipment up today from somewhere, so i don't know who's had it for the past 7 days since it shipped. 😕
