Sorry, have to disagree there. I have no issues seeing my devices across the "g" and "n" networks with my previous gen TC (hosting "n" network) plugged into the netgear router (hosting "g") network.

Yeah, I have the opposite setup. I plugged my Netgear router into my TC and managed to get the Netgear into bridge mode. The TC does all the DHCP including my -g devices connected via the Netgear. I have 2 -n Airport Express's and 1 -g Airport Express all controlled using "Remote" via my -g iPhone. Printing from my -g PowerBook is equally seamless.

The Dual-band/Dual-network setup Does sound desirable for new adopters, but I don't think it's a reason for me to switch since I have successful separate g and n networks - and I'll be getting the new firmware (minus the separate network options)

You already can, I do it all the time when I'm away from home.

Just enable WAN sharing and then just access it from any computer in the world...

I did not realize how little I knew about the AEBS' advantages until I read this post and followed your instructions, InkMaster.

Well done and I thank you!

Just read at another forum that Cisco released on two new routers today. Thought was cool Apple did it first. Then again, maybe it's out there by others and I just had never heard of it.

Definitely cool. Love the fact that I will be able to use my AEBS with MobileMe.

Sonicwalls have had this option for some time. More of a business appliance though.

Time Capsule (1TB, 1st Gen) Update 7.4.1 Causing File Sharing Problems

Is it just me or has the new update caused problems with file sharing? i have my iMac wirelessly connected to my TC connected to a router therefore i use it to connect to the Internet, also connected is my MacBook Air and 360, and a few mates use the Internet off it, but since update 7.4.1 i cannot watch Quicktime movies (that were fine before) and copy files to the hard drive? i love Apple but when things go wrong for me its major stuff which is annoying lol :( sad times

Wow, I could really use that dual-band support. The only way my MBP can have a reliable wireless connection in my apt is through 5 GHz n because of all of the interference from other people's wireless networks. But then I can't use my iPhone on it and guests can't use their iPhones, iPod Touches or older Macs.

But I bought a late 2008 Time Capsule, so oh well... :(

Not working...

So, I updated my first gen TC last night, and after some initial problems after the update (no internet?), it was working. I signed it into Mobile Me, made sure Back to my Mac was on (along with file sharing and so on), and came to work today.

Well... I can see the TC from my office. I can access the disk inside the TC where my backups are stored. I can also see the external HD's plugged into the TC (two 500GB WD's via powered USB hub). However, when I try to access the HD's, I get this error:

"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for 'Music' cannot be found."

This is after it tells me that it cannot find the TC via the ip address.

I have also noticed that I cannot access my iDisk through the finder anymore either - I get error code -35.

Any ideas?

I'm sorry, but I can't really answer why you are having this connection problem since I can't connect to my AEBS at all via MobileMe and Back to My Mac.

Some people over at AppleInsider have said that you must have a Mac at home powered on with Back to My Mac enabled for MobileMe access to work on an AEBS or TC with the new firmware. Is this the setup you have? Can anyone confirm that if you don't have a Mac at home, then MobileMe access to your AEBS or TC is useless through Back to My Mac? If this is the case, then this is an extremely disappointing update.

I can't believe Apple has provided no detailed information at all on how to setup this feature. Their website is extremely misleading since it even shows a picture of an AEBS or TC connecting directly to MobileMe and then connecting directly to a MacBook...

Anyway, here's the link to the info on the AppleInsider forum:

JEFF

Jeff,

Thanks for the guidance. To be a bit more specific, I do not have a Mac (or a PC, for that matter) at home. I can, however, access my Time Capsule, it just seems that anything connected by USB cannot be accessed. I am wondering if the problem is being caused by the USB hub...

No prob. Just keep in mind, you need the modem to either be very friendly with UPNP, or you just open everything you can to the airport. Some of the ****** router/modem combo things - the 2wire ones, that AT&T gives out everyone, are complete trash and are a pain in the ass to work with since they don't even support the basic things... literally you can't do anything on them except very light browsing on one machine...

I have the 2 wire router and an AES. I don't use the AES because the 2 wire has actually been more stable. Strange? I have PS3, XBOX 360, Cable, all hardwired, and 4 pc wireless, a WII wireless and 2 ipod touchs. I have never had any problems with it. Just saying before you trash it.

I am very interested in AES for file sharing though. Can I do the same thing with my mac mini? I think you would follow the same protocols?

Ouch

I downloaded it and my Airport Express stopped working. Every time I went to the config it said "unable to read config -1". I finally had to do a hard reset to get it working again and reconfigure everything.

Could you please explain the setting you changed or added after installing the new firmware, and anything else you did to get Back to My Mac at least partially working with your TC? From what you are saying, the info over at AppleInsider may not be correct. Is your TC connected directly to your modem? Just trying to get a general idea of how your network is setup at home, and how you are able to access your TC through MobileMe and Back to My Mac when many others can't...

Sorry if this is a repeat but I have found a bug/issue with 7.4.1 firmware and extending your network with an Express. (at least in 5Ghz only mode)

Basically, if you have a closed network the Express will not extend the network under 7.4.1, it will if you have it open. My setup works under Extreme firmware at 7.4.1 and Express reverted back to 7.3.2 and keeping my network closed.

I have tested and verified that going to 7.4.1 in the Express breaks the link in a closed network and not in an open one. I have also reported to Apple via Feedback site.

i had the exact same experience with flashing my Express-N broke my N only extended network..I flashed the AES back and was able to connect however my iMac stopped being able to connect to the AEBS in the office so I ended up flashing everything back and abandoning the whole upgrade. I guess I should know better than to flash on the first day--I don't really need any of the features since on the older hardware, the airdisk is so slow its not really worth using...

My TC is connected directly to my Comcast modem at home. I actually discovered that my 'Back to my Mac' feature is not working fully, but that is due to the network at my office (10+ years old). I have had 'Back to my Mac' work in the past - my fiancée and I share a Mobile Me account, so whenever she's logged on at home (on her AEBS) and I am at my place (on my TC), I can see her computer in the Finder. I will try to find a suitable wireless network out this way and see if I can get it working. If so, I will post my entire network settings tonight.

Time Capsule and mobile me

I have been trying to set up my TC so that I can access files when away on business with no luck

I have just come across a not in airport help the says that you need to have full Mobile me subs rather than the free trial.

I would buy Mobile me if it works with my late 2008 TC but don't want to spend £60 if it does not

Can any one confirm that they have got this to work before I get the credit card out.

Stealth mode?

Just noticed that all my ports are now in stealth mode. Previously, I could only get closed ports. I test regularly using GRC site. This happened either after the airport utility or firmware update. Anyone else notice?

Time Capsule firmware update.

I ran the installer and now Time Machine can't access the backup file on the Capsule. The Network is ok and Airport Utility can 'see' Time Capsule but 100+GB of data has gone west! Can anybody help? Thanks.

AirPort Client Update 2009-001 & Linksys WRT600N (or other simul. dual band routers)

Can owners of other simultaneous dual band routers like the Linksys WRT600N (and newer WRT610N) name both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network the same, and have the Apple hardware that supports 802.11n (Intel based MB, MBP, etc.) (and running the AirPort Client Update 2009-001) automatically choose which network to join based on quality of the signal and the speed that's available (resulting in the same roaming capability of the new Airport Extreme Base station)?

Does this functionality reside solely in the Apple computer hardware, or is there some sort of secret hand-shaking that occurs between the new AEBS and the Apple computers that result in this roaming and band switching capability?

reselect your backup disk in time machine and enter a password if needed

It should, but why don't you call Apple first to be certain.

developer.apple.com

What was I thinking, I meant 10.6!!! Where's my Snow Leopard? I suppose mister smartypants will give me the same answer! ::grin::

Airport is still functioning very well for me, my Airport Disk is staying connected better than it was before the update. I'd get an occasional warning that the disk was not available, clicking the acknowledgement would allow it reconnect.

In the hours since the update it has not dropped once, would have done so a handful of times before.

Ciao. Joel.
