Nice! No wake from sleep noise!
I don`t really mind about the startup noise.. but in a class, the superdrive can be very annoying when waking from sleep!
I like it :p

Anyone know if this solves the glitch that has prevented me and others from using airtunes? Ever since iTunes 9 has been released, I can't connect to airtunes speakers. iTunes sees the speakers and then reports:

"An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "myairport'sname". An unkown error occurred (-15000)."

I have to agree with the guy who was surprised about them offering a patch for a noise when there are glitches like these out there for so long (since September!)

other than the airport update this is the best 10.6 update out there.FINALLY my MBP is silent completely silent no other laptop I have ever had was that noisy on startup!

no love for my core duo MBP (MacBook Pro 1,1)... still obnoxiously loud superdrive sound upon waking:(

Really Apple? Really?
Yes

The noise from the Superdrive was something so horrible it required you to work on it?
Yes

Yes

This was a priority?
Yes

I bet Steve just got jack of the tiny amount of noise from his laptop he stole the whole software division to fix it.
Probably not

Try starting your computer up in any quiet environment.. library, classroom, office. This helps a lot.

Well, it would help a lot, if it did what it claimed to. Like everyone else, mine still makes the noise on startup. Guess I'll just have to use Sleep more often.

Yeah, I hope they update the description. Right now this is just lying..

I don't know if this update is the problem, but when I updated and restarted, my login password wouldn't work. I could log on to my guest account.

I booted up off the Snow Leopard disc and changed the password, but now I've got all kinds of issues. I can't open up any browser (Safari, Firefox or Flock), some of my calendars are gone, and if I hold down on a dock item, the dock disappears for a few seconds.

I'm running a MacBook Pro/2.33 GHz/3GB 667 MHz DD2/OS X 10.6.2

...

What are my chances that Apple will benevolently pass this update on to people who bought their computers 2 years ago??

I'm pretty sure Steve would *much* rather you buy a newer macbook instead. Just wait 'til next Black Friday - I hear they are going to have a really good sale then...

still have issues

I updated and I've lost Airport functionality three times in two hours...

NEVER - not once an issue prior to the last update.

The superdrive is quiet now.

So is there a consensus? I've read about people having issues after installing this update. Is it worth doing now? So far the noise isn't an issue for me and I value wireless and my passwords working higher...

Hmmm...

Thank god it fixed Airport! That was annoying as hell, as it regularly turned off and only a restart would fix it, and also regularly said it was on, but wasn't. So my sister would always keep telling me to reset it. Thank you Apple, took a while though.

I think I have figured out why everybody still has the noise on startup. When the SuperDrive used to make noise at startup and wake from sleep, it was "checking" the drive for any issues. They probably thought this was not needed at wake from sleep, but needed at startup. That's my theory.

I think you're right in that it goes though self-dianostics on the drive start-up. So it make perfect sense that it would still make the noise on system start-up. I was originally annoyed by the sound but then started to feel comfort from it giving me a audio clue that the machine woke normally. (but I think i'll get used the the silence!)

Well, this update did not include my late 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook. I still get that awful Superdrive noise when I wake it from sleep.

Why not include it? I mean, why pick and choose? Is a two year old computer really already off of Apple's radar for tweaking?

Lame.

+1

Same here (late08, snow leopard): Fixed the noise on wake up, but not on boot up.

And: wake up seems to take 2-3 seconds longer.

I was about to say the same thing! I was thrilled when I read that there is a firmware for the SuperDrive noise, but wasn't so thrilled after I learned that it was for the unibody MacBook. Why are we left hanging?

I'm not surprised though, there were no more tweaks to Leopard after Snow Leopard was released...

2-3 sec LONGER? That is my total wake up time. (late 08 unibody mbp 2.4/ snow leopard). What is your total time?

Also to those who miss the sound ... I bet you could use Sleepwatcher to play a sound on wake-up :)

Here's hoping I can get my home WiFi network going again... Used to share my network from my Mini, then it all went to heck after SL.

That's a little different.

Plus, I have Snow Leopard on my MacBook.

I suspect the fix was for SATA SuperDrives. Pre unibodys used IDE. Maybe new firmware for them later.

I have Snow Leopard too, but it's just a shame because the sound of the SuperDrive is annoying... every time I hear the sound, it's like the SuperDrive is slowly dying.
