Actually I like the sound. :(

Perhaps I'll download this later. My Internet is acting up again.

Well, i'll be darned. the superdrive actually is quiet upon startup.

now.... i'm crossing my fingers that the wifi connection to my apple airport stays stable. and maybe when it needs to pick between my 2 ones. it will actually start to be pick the stronger signal.

Exactly the same issue here, as well...
There is still the same noise on startup...
MacBook Pro Late 2008

Hopefully, Apple is going to fix it!

Late 2008 MBP: No noise on sleep, noise on startup. Noise is gone when starting Disk Utility too.

Again, i was not prompted for my password to install this update. Very bad security, its like being back on windows 98 or xp.

It's funny they actually did work on this insignificant issue while there are these serious graphic glitches in Safari 4 on SL while opening background tabs that require DIRE attention!

But I ain't complaining, every update is a good update.

After installing these firmware updates my computer takes ages to sleep, like 30 seconds or so - both by selecting sleep from the apple menu as well as by closing the lid. Anyone else has this too?

Orginal Macbook late 2008.

Aha, I think I figured it out - ClamxAV doesn't seem to like the new firmware and prevents the OS to go to sleep:

09-12-09 13:06:24 ClamXavSentry[142] attempting to terminate gfslogger

shows up whenever I put it to sleep. Now that I've ClamXavsentry sleep is instant (well, after the hibernate write).

Is anyones macbook taking longer to startup now. It takes around 5-10 seconds longer than before and that little loading icon appears for quite a while now.

Does anyone else here use AirLock? I was trying it out and it worked fine yesterday, but doesn't seem to see my iPhone today after I installed the updates...

Yeah, Apple only has one programmer that they assigned this insignificant task to. :p

Really Apple? Really?

The noise from the Superdrive was something so horrible it required you to work on it?

Really?

This was a priority?

I bet Steve just got jack of the tiny amount of noise from his laptop he stole the whole software division to fix it.

Really Chundles? Really?

I thought people were excessive in their complaining about problems... never thought I'd see someone complain about fixing them.

Must be one of those people who get their jollies from complaining. Really glad I don't know you in person.

apparently Apple thinks, " Hey! Let's delay the SuperDrive noise on start up so it will begin during the start up "dong" sound...that way it will "seem " like the noise is reduced."

The noise was useful as feedback that it actually woke up when the computer is not visible, as Bluetooth is too unreliable on these machines.

My late-2007 MacBook's superdrive makes a loud noise when the computer turns on/wakes from sleep. It is annoying, but I've just learned to deal with it. However, I do wish this update was for my model of Mac in hopes it would correct the problem. :(

Me too, I got really excited when I saw this headline, but my late 2007 MBP does not qualify. The noise drives me nuts, probably because I used my computer as an alarm clock for a year when I had a job that had me waking up at 6am every day. The computer wood wake from sleep and start playing music gradually louder and louder, but the waking from sleep was always enough to make me wake up. Now whenever I hear the sound, I get a twinge of disgust, as if I'm being woken from a deep sleep again - bad association!

What are my chances that Apple will benevolently pass this update on to people who bought their computers 2 years ago??

airport update fix usb drive issues??

Anyone try to see if this update helps with usb drive issues on the new airport? Was about to return the new one I bought and keep my old one which is working just fine!

I don't know if this was what Chundles was thinking (if not, feel free to correct me), but maybe he has issues he deems more necessary to fix than loud superdrives. I'll admit, I don't know everything this firmware fixes, but who knows? A fix is a fix.

I think I have figured out why everybody still has the noise on startup. When the SuperDrive used to make noise at startup and wake from sleep, it was "checking" the drive for any issues. They probably thought this was not needed at wake from sleep, but needed at startup. That's my theory.

The noise was useful as feedback that it actually woke up when the computer is not visible, as Bluetooth is too unreliable on these machines.

Reminds me of the people who want to have noise generators implemented in electric cars so that the otherwise mostly silent vehicles can still be noticed by pedestrians.

I'm happy that Apple pays attention to details like the superdrive noise, it's so much more elegant to wake the computer without ANY noise! The startup noise is still there, just like for everyone else, but I don't really mind as I don't shut down my MacBook Pro as often as I put it to sleep.

drive noise gone, but now fan's noisier!!

Stupid update. Since I did it, I've notice my MBP's fan goes on all the time and makes quite a bit of noise. Anyone had the same problem? I'm so pissed! Rotten Apple!

thanks.
