I've been waiting for this. Can't wait to get it.

Because the battery isn't replaceable I wonder if you will be able to open the back to change out the hard drive or upgrade the ram. I could really use 8gb of ram, but I can't justify paying Apple $1200 for the upgrade.

this is because the ram is DDR3 not DDR2. ACTUALLY apple is giving this option probably somewhere near cost, how cheap can you get the same RAM for a notebook???

D:apple:

No quad core? No user-replaceable drive or battery? For $3000? You have to be kidding.

Apple is in deep ****.

Only 7 hours battery using the "real" GPU (which isn't Snow Leopard going to be using all the time?) and they are touting this as a breakthrough?

Geez, I can buy another battery for $99 and get 10 hours! Revolutionary!

Not to mention HP's new Boston-Power batteries that seem to last longer still...

And if they remove the Firewire port they can implement a even bigger battery!! :D

In a word. Yuck.

I mean, I like anti-glare screen, I like big SSD, I don't like 17" and would like those other features in the 15" model (they've done this before though, roll out incredible new features to the 17"). They really stuck it to Macworld and especially attendees with the worst keynote ever - over an hour on 2 software products and no mention of Snow Leopard. In fact, he went out of his way to tout a new software bundle that includes Old Leopard - yeah, that's a good idea - rebuy the old stuff.

I'm really upset that Steve didn't tell the whole truth to everyone in his letter, he should've just said there was nothing to announce.

"matte" does not sound like the same thing as "anti glare coating." I am suspicious until I see it in person. Can anyone at Macworld take a gander at this screen and tell us how matte this screen looks?

They probably realised the clever ones upgrade the ram themselves...
What bugs me are the bloating battery problem myself and many other users had on the 17 inch... on the new one wouldn't that just break everything inside? And if it happened it would be another problem for which you'd have to send the whole mac back to apple...

Positive:

Matte option

Negative:

-Non-removable battery. If they had introduced battery with 8 hours / 1000 cycles using silver zinc I would've been impressed but this is yet another Li-ion. What if the new battery goes sony? Since its internal it can't expand without damaging other components (Phil said its packed extremely tight and close to other components).
-No Bluray

I think ZPower's silver-zinc claims are somewhat bogus. Lithium has the highest electronegativity of any element on the periodic table and thus would produce the most energy in redox reactions (the reaction batteries do).

Plus silver+zinc is going to be much more heavy than lithium (again, just look at the periodic table).

Until some exotic nanocrap comes along, lithium technology batteries are the ultimate battery chemistry.

Very nice, but that's nearly 2000 pounds in the uk! Far too expensive!
Agree completely, I went and looked and thought about it for a minute and then realised I could buy a 2.4ghz 13" macbook (up the ram to 4GB and 320gb drive) plus the new 24" display and still have a couple of quid change. Spend another £100 and I can have a spare battery too.

Is the new battery, the 9600m, expresscard slot (doubt I'd use it anyway), the increased size screen and case and firewire (not a major loss for me personally as I'm going network storage these days.) really worth that much extra? I don't think it is and I know which route I would take, I'd even suffer the mirrored display on the macbook.

Most non apple laptops costing near £2k have blu-ray drives these days which makes it even more annoying.

Hey Schiller just so you know, its a MACBOOK PRO little buddy. Not a macbook. Okay. The day there is a macbook with a 17" screen is the day that bush is a genious.

lol.

Wow!! where's price to performance? $2800!!!! not even blu-ray??

I highly dobut we will ever see blu-ray in macs. Steve said he wants to wait till it really pushes off, but hes to intrested in itunes and apple TV. Apple TV doesnt even support true 1080p, nor is there any DVR functionality, so that alone, takes away from the name "apple tv"

A non-removable battery an a $2700 "pro" machine is just not a smart idea.

not in todays times, apple is crazzy.

Click on the thumbnails provided on the Apple website just below the "Graphics in Full Force" blurb about NVIDA.

The second image of the anti-glare MacBook Pro is a thing of beauty with no black bezel. Still unclear whether surface is glass or plastic.

The screen? I'm sure its the typical matte. The glossy screens on the macbooks use matte, but that black bezzel whitch is part of the glass display, makes it "glossy"

So no new Mac Pros then!!???

Is there any other event in Feb where they could be leaunched? - has Apple just forgotten it's pro users entirely???

No wonder he sent another guy!

:]

The anti-glare option is welcome. It was clear to me that Apple made a mistake in not offering a matte option last time round.

I'm dubious about the fixed battery. I use my MBP plugged in 90% of the time. It is on fairly constantly, and that can harm the battery over time. So I take the battery out and just run on the mains. That wouldn't be an option with a fixed battery.

That is not good for the computer and when you do that the processor will be underclocked (not sure if that is the correct technical terminology) by the cpu as the battery is used as a buffer for power when plugged in. Taking it out only limits your performance which in a price/performance ratio probably means you're losing more by running essentially a slower computer (which you paid more for) than running a battery which costs £90 to replace :)

D:apple:

anyone know who the OEM is for these special "square" lithium cells?

Formulation is Lithium Polymer, meaning that the cells can be packed in any arangement, including square.

And the biggest problem with sealing the battery in is like ALL lithium ion and lithium poylmer devices they loose charge capacity over time, even if you leave it on AC all the time and never cycle the battery. This gets worse with ambient temperature. So when you enclose a battery in completley by the rest of the laptop, surround it with aluminum (which heats up with the laptop), you could easily see running temperatures of 110 degrees for the battery, meaning it will loose capacity of aproximatley 30% over a period of a year, possibly more depending on use.

So who wants to lend me $6000 for my new MBP (properly configured) and LED Monitor....ummmmmmmmmmmmm I think they may have gone a tad bit above normal pricing... $2799 STARTING PRICE!!!

It's amazing that they don't include quad-core even as an option or replaceable battery or Blu-Ray or a processor over 3 GHz.........

Apple can announce an event and have a press corps. on-campus in a matter of 5-6 days - they don't really need established events to promote new products.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I wonder how much the take back and recycling program will cost the owner. Just a thought.

lol.

I hear what you're saying, it's just frustrating when you have friends with PCs and they're playing/watching/burning blu-ray movies on them, meanwhile I drop a couple grand for a MacBook Pro and I'm not even "offered" the option..

I'm just venting..

I highly dobut they will sell many. With in the first month, I say, they may sell, like, 50? maybe 100. Who has THAT much money, let alone, the way you look at it, you can get the same basic specs for 1699 range.

Apple is crazy. They know the enconmey sucks right now and they are really discriminating those who want one, but can't afford it.

Reason why i'm saying this is because the price. 2799. I could see if it was 2199, but 27?

I don't like the lack of FW 400 and built-in battery :(
Other than that, looks good. And mate finish is a big plus.

I guess I'm still holding to my 15" MBP for a while more to come...nothing has "wowed" me yet.

GOT D@M!T Apple!

You always have to push the freakin edge!

I guess 8 hours is okay, but the charge cycles are even cooler.

Glad there's a matte option for goodness sake.

Glad to see dual 2.93 but where the hell is my quad core!?

And stop with the thinness bu!!***** and give me TWO internal HDDs!

I would love to just take out the optical and put in a second drive but you SEALED THE WHOLE THING UP!

Oh well.... I knew this was coming.

I think you missed the whole point about having an intelligent charging system that detects how much each individual cell needs to be recharged and then stops charging it when it is full. There is no reason to take the battery out since it doesn't keep trying to charge a full battery. Even with current MBs I would guess this is the same with the only difference that it now happens on a cell by cell basis instead of the whole battery.

Only the 17-inch has a 'optional antiglare display'. So is this a true matte screen?

A friend of mine is up for a new laptop at her work place. She's considering the new 17" mbp.

Her company is springing for it (they put a $3000 cap on computers)...

Discrimination? LOL. I'd like a Bentley too, but they are discriminating against poor working joes me!
