Well they just killed the resale market for it (who in their right mind would buy a second hand laptop where you can't replace the battery yourself?).

And WHAT NO BLU RAY!?! How can they say it is a high end machine without blu ray!!!!

So who wants to lend me $6000 for my new MBP (properly configured) and LED Monitor....ummmmmmmmmmmmm I think they may have gone a tad bit above normal pricing... $2799 STARTING PRICE!!!

It's amazing that they don't include quad-core even as an option or replaceable battery or Blu-Ray or a processor over 3 GHz.........

GOT D@M!T Apple!

You always have to push the freakin edge!

I guess 8 hours is okay, but the charge cycles are even cooler.

Glad there's a matte option for goodness sake.

Glad to see dual 2.93 but where the hell is my quad core!?

And stop with the thinness bu!!***** and give me TWO internal HDDs!

I would love to just take out the optical and put in a second drive but you SEALED THE WHOLE THING UP!

Oh well.... I knew this was coming.

8 hours is more then ok, other 17' laptops barly make it out of 2. but will the 8 hours and 1000 charge stand up to its name? we will see.....

I love how HP always includes 2 HDS on their larger laptops, people like space, give it to them.

This MacWorld was an utter disaster. iWork and iLife?? Ok, trinkets. Where's the REAL computer hardware--unibody 17" MBP. No wonder Jobs wasn't there. This was disappointing to the extreme. They could have at least TALKED a few minutes about the hopes for 2009 concerning the release of OSX Snoleo, and the MacMini which is OBVIOUSLY coming soon, and maybe iMacs, and what the company is doing and planning with hardware, phones, etc. Boo, Apple, boo.

Could NOT have agreed with you more. This was absolutely pathetic.

this is because the ram is DDR3 not DDR2. ACTUALLY apple is giving this option probably somewhere near cost, how cheap can you get the same RAM for a notebook???

D:apple:

$US500 from Crucial or $US649 from Ramjet (Bring on the 8GB option on the 15-inch!!)

This upgrade is $A2100 in Australia -- but I wasn't able to find an Aus online store with this part, just lots of 2x2GB kits for ~$A400. I remember a great post here commenting on Apple RAM prices on an MBP recently: "prices have gone down from first-born child prices to merely rape and pillage prices" :D

I won't be buying it -- would prefer the 15-inch -- don't mind the lack of blu-ray, and the $A4500 is roughly in line with an exchange rate of $US0.7 = $A1. But it needs a 500GB HD option unless that's easily user replaceable.

Lots of Brits on here complaining about the UK price -- perhaps they aren't aware of the slide of the pound in the last few days -- it's been down to 0.6966 pounds = $US1 intraday recently according to oanda.com -- Apple has to protect themselves, there's a big downside possibility unfortunately with things going on a slide in the UK.

Ah, so predictable. I say Apple completely stops giving any presentation as they do them more bad than good. The expectations are just way, way, wayyyy too high. Silent updates are much better just like back in the day.
I have to agree. It was much more exciting getting a clock speed bump on your Power Mac G4 out of the blue.

The RAM upgrade price isn't great but it's better then buying it yourself and having the 4 GB laying around.

so you will have to take it in and pay to have the battery replaced? not too cool being that mbp batteries do not have a stellar reputation. i am glad to see a matte option though. i'm sure this will also be available to the 15 incher as well. sucks for all you early buyers though.:D

Only the 17-inch has a 'optional antiglare display'. So is this a true matte screen?

Given those no black around the screen, then yes. The black bezzel is part of the "glass" and that makes it matte. If you take a macbook and remove the black bezzel, you will most likly get the matte option..

Her company is springing for it (they put a $3000 cap on computers)...

well, at elast they will have 200 bucks left to spend lol

Already is. Remove the glass, and you'll have the matte....

and some like glossy ;)

Pretty decent pricing. I was expecting it to be around £2200 but I was surprised (not shocked but surprised) to find it only £1940 which is about the same as the older one was.

I'm going to wait to see how these are when people get them and the first generation of defects are ironed out before putting my final decision on one but I think based on what I've seen I'll probably be buying one. I currently have a 2.16GHz Core Duo 17" that I bought in about June 2006 (Almost 3 years ago!).

Some things that I really really like about the new 17"

- Battery Life, 1000 Load Cycle battery before death, the estimation of '5 years' of productive life out of the battery before it hits the dirt.
- Anti-Glare coating choice for the Screen!
- Reasonable pricing not that much more then the original model
- 4GB of RAM Standard + up to 8GB of RAM Supported

I wasn't expecting Bluray or a 2nd HD bay or eSATA or Firewire 400 so to me the new 17" has gone down quite well. I was going to stay away from it due to the rumour about the Internal battery and I don't like the amount of reflections on the Glossy display however it seems these two 'problems' have been corrected. I happily await first hand reviews!

And WHAT NO BLU RAY!?! How can they say it is a high end machine without blu ray!!!!

Physical media will be dead very soon. Thus it doesn't surprise me that Apple hasn't yet included Blue Ray drives in their systems. Who knows, they may never do it.

Fantastic machine, but come on, so many other models have been woefully out of date for months and months and months.

I have had the cash burning a hole in my pocket since last fall, does this company NOT want it?

-_-;

Boo, Apple, boo.

Aren't you missing the point???

This is just the build up to the main event - Job's back on stage looking healthier introducing the real 2009 'head turners' including iPhone, OSX Snole etc.

Plus, if you think back to yesterday Job's even gave you a schedule for this... Sometime around the end of this quarter when he's had time to bulk back up!

This could be the greatest 'third act' comeback in Job's Apple history :)

another vote for the matte option for 15".

It's sorta lame they charge 50 bucks for an option that used to be included, but thats the way it goes. Their displays are different now, maybe its more of a pain to make a matte version of the new glass screen.

All the announcements today got more negative votes than positive ones. My guess is that people aren't so upset with what that announcement had, but rather which things they were hoping to see but didn't.

I personally think any revisions to the iMac line will be a minor event or a simple Tuesday update with no more fanfare than Apple front page. The fate of the Mini is still up in the air. Not surprised to see iLife and iWork updates. I'm curious if the Boxed Set will extend to Snow Leopard when that releases. I personally would get the iLife update and don't need iWork but would consider the Box Set to get all 3 together, though I don't personally want to wait till 10.6 comes out to get the new iLife. Maybe I'll just go rebate hunting.

Geez, I can buy another battery for $99 and get 10 hours! Revolutionary!

:D:D:D

Anyway, why on earth they didn't replace DVD with media / multifunction bay?!? Bluray, two batteries, two HD's (RAID anyone?), breakout boxes for media pros etc. etc. possibilities are endless if you let third parties to utilize it.

Now that I've seen the bottom, I think Apple has made the battery non-removable on purpose. Now that there's no way to get inside your MBP, you would have to have the battery replaced and RAM upgraded through Apple. This $2800 computer could turn into a $4000 with a RAM upgrade or even $4900 computer if you add the 256GB SSD also.

Who would pay $5000 for a computer? If you would, you should consider buying a Mac Pro, a 15-in MacBook Pro, and a Apple display for about the same price.

Worst MacWorld Ever!

I've been watching these for many, many years, and seriously, I can't remember one that was as bad as this since the "flower-colored" iMacs came out. I can understand why Apple would not want to be a participant anymore. Expectations were set unreasonably high, but am I missing something? Did Phil not say initially that he will talk about "Macs"? There were no mentions of "Macs"? Only the stats about last year... everything else was 1) mediocre software, 2) iTunes (blah), and 3) awesome notebook that is, again, severely over-priced. Where the heck were the Macs? And is an update to a 20+ month computer a high expectation? Worst ever Macworld...:apple:

at $3000 they should have been offering an optional second hdd or a blue ray drive, they have no more excuses they had for the lower machine, this is a pro machine for god's sake in 2009 and they think they can get away with a 320 gb hd? When this is supposed to be a desktop replacement for gods sake? In these hard time someone's gonna shell out 3000 of his hard earned cash to get a slot loading dvd f.cker that's been around for years and can burn a meagre 4.3 gbs, and no option, forget blueray, we know why you don't want it, you dont want any money escaping these days that you ve become a gargantuan monster :apple: . Because you were on of the first tec companies IN SUPPORT of the blue ray format, but that was before the itunes avalanche, now anyone want to buy anything it's going to have to pass through itunes, film too, itunes, hence no blue ray, it doesn't take a genius to figure this out, that they d rather have you getting their version from itunes and on you your :apple:tv instead of your blueray player.....but enough's enough....at least offer a got damn option for a second hdd, or, better an ssd for the system and an hdd, that's what a pro system is about these days, that's what being in the forefront of innovation means, not using years old tired configurations and asking for premium $. UNACCEPTABLE.

It's obvious to anyone with an open mind that apple has started to slip and slip a lot, I don't know if it's steves health or the iphone and trying two growth sectors, but they are making so many bad choices that they haven't paid for yet but they will soon. Sad to see this.

Very nice, but that's nearly 2000 pounds in the uk! Far too expensive!

Shame no news on the rumoured iMac or Mini Mac...

Too expensive for who?? If a person needs these specs, they can either allready afford it, or this thing will be making them money. Apple is targeting this to pros - to pros, this is perfect and priced right. Photographers in the field will love this thing! :D A Pro can attach an external BD burner to this through eSATA in the field and use the same burner through eSATA on the workstation at the office and at home. The same goes for an external hard drive. I have a G-Tech RAID plugged into my 15" 2 year old MBP through eSATA and it works fantastic.

Very true, though the 2 hours is usually on their thick high end stuff.

I want to see what kind of battery life I can get while rendering four streams of 1080p in FCP. Or in encoding that HD footage to MP4. If I get 6 hours of continuous use or more then I am happy. The 1000 charge cycle is what makes me a bit more satisfied, and wasn't spoke on much in the forums.

As for space, I would take it over the optical since I don't burn much discs.

I wouldn't say optical media is dead, that's only for those that either don't do work, don't watch full HD movies on HD capable TVs, or those wannabe nerds that just want to speculate on the death of a certain tech without actually having much to back it up but fads.

So far, all of the promotional material I have been creating is being put to optical disc. Not Blue-Ray just yet, but.

p.s. I spec'd out my ideal 17" and it came to about $3200. Not to happy about that since I can get quad core with better GFX and dual HDDs for a little more.

Physical media will be dead very soon. Thus it doesn't surprise me that Apple hasn't yet included Blue Ray drives in their systems. Who knows, they may never do it.

I completely agree. Apple foresaw the death of the floppy drive (that caused quite a stir) and analog modem (which still takes up space in a lot of new laptops). And now, the death of optical disks. All of them consolidated into one beautiful thing: fast networking and fast internet access.

Just like before, they are getting a lot of flack for it, but we will all look back and know it was the smart thing to do.

Edit: Another thought, too - imagine how awesome of a laptop this would be if it had no optical drive, like the Air, and replaced all that space with battery and/or a second hard drive ... drool
