But but but... NO BLU-RAY!

It's useful for backups... well... Sure the disks cost $5 a piece, and the write speed is really slow... And I guess the disks *do* only hold a fraction of what a cheap hard drive does. Sure, you can't read them with most computers...

But... uh...

Well let's talk about movies!

Granted, the new releases cost twice as much as they do on DVD, and yes -- I can't really tell that much of a difference when sitting 10+ feet away from my TV... but the extra pixels are totally worth the DRM that can cause the player to refuse to function if it thinks my display or computer are "unapproved"...

Oh. Well crap. Guess I really don't need a $500+ Blu-Ray player after all.

Battery!

For the 95% of people like me who almost never take the battery out of their laptop, this is a huge boon. A battery with 60% more uptime, yet will last for 1000 load/unload cycles!? If true, almost everyone I know who has a laptop would love this feature. I'd buy the 15" tomorrow if I knew I could get 60% more uptime, and I wouldn't have to worry about my battery aging so much. My current battery has 218 load cycles, is 19 months old, and has 85% of its original capacity. When new, I got about 3.5 hours from a charge. With this new technology, I could have started with about 5.5 hours, and with a longer-lasting battery, I'd have more of that original capacity.

I was disappointed in the announcements. recently bought a dell for the bluray. Its nice having it so portable. Every TV/projector I have connected has been like mac with cameras and other devices. Pops right up and image displayed. I think once bluray is incorporated it will be a great addition to great machines.

Wow!! where's price to performance? $2800!!!! not even blu-ray??

WTF are you talking about??? Why are people always posting about things they don't know or understand???

17" UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1920x1200) LCD Display
Integrated 2.0 MP webcam with dual digital array microphone

320GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor
8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load
NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M, 512MB Discrete

Price::::: $3,955*!!!!!!!

That's right, an equally configured Dell pro laptop cost MORE than ONE THOUSAND US DOLLARS THAN THE 17" MACBOOK PRO.

Try the same thing with the Mac Pro and the Dell Xeon Workstations with EXACT SAME SPECS, the Mac Pro is close to $2,000 cheaper than the exact same Dell.

The $17" MacBook pro is incredible cheap! :-D

Mini!!

I need a new computer, and I've been patiently waiting for the new mini to come out so I can buy one, but I don't know how much longer I can wait - my Commodore 64 is on it's last legs.

where are you Mini???!!!

Given those no black around the screen, then yes. The black bezzel is part of the "glass" and that makes it matte. If you take a macbook and remove the black bezzel, you will most likly get the matte option..

All images of the new 17" I've seen do indeed have a black bezel. Also, the store calls it an "anti-glare coating".

anti-glare coating =/= matte screen

I can't seem to find any pictures of the anti-glare model. Are you guys seeing something I haven't?

Awesome looking laptop like always BUT.

Apple should really consider re-designing the whole keyboard layout.
While gorgeous it looks odd to have such a wide body and a keyboard that fits a 13" laptop.

I have a feeling that it won't be the case once professionals start pushing those cores and GFX.

I have a feeling the life will go down to about 5 hours with light pro app use.

another vote for the matte option for 15".

My vote has gone there too before, as I am sure 90% will do the same. WHAT IS NIGHTMARISH is that apple migh use yet another dirty trick like the firewire port on the small macbook and the crappy display to differentiate between models. I am afraid the coniving b.stards they are turning into they wont let you buy matte unless you shell out the 17" money.

God I wish I am wrong in this prediction...

Too expensive for who?? If a person needs these specs, they can either allready afford it, or this thing will be making them money. Apple is targeting this to pros - to pros, this is perfect and priced right. Photographers in the field will love this thing! :D A Pro can attach an external BD burner to this through eSATA in the field and use the same burner through eSATA on the workstation at the office and at home. The same goes for an external hard drive. I have a G-Tech RAID plugged into my 15" 2 year old MBP through eSATA and it works fantastic.

I think he means it's too expensive when you look at the exchange rate.

I was afraid this would happen and now I'm sincerely upset.

If you're going to offer the matte option for the 17", why the hell can't you offer it for the 15"?

My sentiment exactly. Why oh why should I get a 17 to have this option?
I currently own a 15" new model and I hate the screen. Luckily I have a23" ACD. But still why not on the 15"

I also hope that 8GB of ram wil become an option the 15" as well.

I'm not really mourning on the 256GB SSD cause I still think it is way to much money.

Did anyone see people passing out NoDoz during Phil's keynote?

Does anyone see how it is ridiculous that the money you could spend to get this computer could equal the money you could spend to get a used car?

I am sure with the way the economy is, ppl will be rushing out to buy this 3 thousand dollar computer in no time. good choice of pricing :apple:

no netbook, no tablet, no iphone nano, no iphone update, no new shuffle, no jobs, no good to anyone.

I think the media fell asleep during phil's software demo. he could have at least jumped off a 30 ft high scaffold to make things more interesting. instead, lets get a dinosaur to sing a song for us.

Uhh . . am I mistaken or did Apple pull a little switcharoo, lol. Was it not the glossy screen that we once had to pay extra for, and the matte was commonplace? Could it be that they noticed the higher demand for one and then said, "we need to change some things around"? Either way, I am very happy with the new specs . . ( BATTERY LIFE ! ) ahem . . excuse me, got a little excited there. Battery life, I so need it. :D:apple:

So the Anti Glare option is just a Matte Screen?

That's what I would like to know OR are they just adding some anti-glare screen device/coating? If I recall right I thing Phil did say Anti-Glare and that may indicate it is not a real matte screen. Going to look at the specs if I don;'t see that answer here. A bit of a rush at the moment just got in from work. -)))

Oh and that second song was a real crusher for me. You know that one called " I left my Mac-Mini in San Francisco "

I get you, but you are talking about a machine that has the chassis to go quad core with much better GFX and dual HDDs.

Not to mention the 3 year warranty that is included.

So much for getting third party memory.

I can't believe no one is complaining that users can't upgrade the RAM on this thing by themselves! You have to do it when you order the damn thing for an EXTRA 1200 bucks! Jesus, apple!
