so another 17" MBP and that's it ? For what the hell do they organise a whole event ? WTF

I can't believe no one is complaining that users can't upgrade the RAM on this thing by themselves! You have to do it when you order the damn thing for an EXTRA 1200 bucks! Jesus, apple!

Now it all makes sense.

Could NOT have agreed with you more. This was absolutely pathetic.

Once again... NOW do you understand why Apple is decoupling from MW?
Its a no-win for AAPL, either having to
1) suffer the wrath of such as you who want flying cars and cancer cures announced every time, or
2) announce a really killer product, and again suffering the wrath of those who bitch that Apple screwed them by announcing after the Xmas buying season.

This was a fun show 20 years ago... irrelevant and damaging to Apple now.
Pulling out was the right move.

Silly question

Does anyone know if it hurts the battery in the new or old macbooks/pros if you use the computer hooked up to the magsafe as if it were a desktop?

17" looks nice but...
Can you open it to get to mem/HD?
Can you replace the battery in 5 years from now or sooner if their specs are wrong or is it going to be like the old ipods $100 plus charge you to put it in for you like you have a choice?

Rumors were way better than the actual keynote though. I was looking forward to a mini or even a tablet which ever my wallet could afford.

I'm pretty happy with this announcement, especially since at work we are looking at buying new machines for developers. I was originally on the fence as to whether to get a Mac Pro or a MBP, mainly because of the 4GB limitation, but now I definitely want this new MBP 17".

I was originally disappointed when they released the new MBP 15", mainly due to the glossy displays, and subsequently bought a refurbished previous-generation MBP 15" (which I'm very happy with, especially at the price I bought it, $1350).

But now the 17" has an anti-glare option and can support 8GB RAM. And 8 hours of battery life. Can't really complain, and look forward to it being my work machine (assuming the purchases are approved). The non-removable battery thing could be a problem for some, but not for me as I never swap batteries. I don't necessarily need the 8 hours of battery life, either, so I could go either way on it, but it'll be nice knowing that I can just leave my power adapter behind when I'm going into a long meeting.

I guess the 15" will be the more ideal traveling machine for those who need to swap batteries. I wonder if they are planning to do the same thing to the 15", though.

The one thing I'm concerned about with the new 17" is how easy it will be replace RAM (and hard drive). In the video I watched it looked like there was no compartment that you can open on the bottom of the laptop, but maybe that was more of an artist rendering. We are thinking we will buy them with 4GB of RAM, and then buy the 8GB from a 3rd party, then upgrade it ourselves. Hopefully that will be possible without some serious surgery. And what about the hard drive? Is that going to be difficult to replace too?

Jesus ? Yes, he is good . ;)

No sale of either the 15" or 17" to me until someone comes up with an aftermarket displayport to VGA adaptor. How am I suppose to actually use Keynote?

It's awesome but...

It's an awesome machine but...
  • No Quad Core
  • No Blue Ray
  • 4 GB memory sticks need to come down in price
  • What's the deal with SLI and switching graphics card - log in/out again?

Personally I am for the non removable battery. The only time I've taken mine out is to replace it after it wouldn't charge anymore. I'm on 397 battery cycles and 92% battery health and I get about 3 hours.

A step in the right direction, keep it up.

at $3000 they should have been offering an optional second hdd or a blue ray drive, they have no more excuses they had for the lower machine, this is a pro machine for god's sake in 2009 and they think they can get away with a 320 gb hd? When this is supposed to be a desktop replacement for gods sake? In these hard time someone's gonna shell out 3000 of his hard earned cash to get a slot loading dvd f.cker that's been around for years and can burn a meagre 4.3 gbs, and no option, forget blueray, we know why you don't want it, you dont want any money escaping these days that you ve become a gargantuan monster :apple: . Because you were on of the first tec companies IN SUPPORT of the blue ray format, but that was before the itunes avalanche, now anyone want to buy anything it's going to have to pass through itunes, film too, itunes, hence no blue ray, it doesn't take a genius to figure this out, that they d rather have you getting their version from itunes and on you your :apple:tv instead of your blueray player.....but enough's enough....at least offer a got damn option for a second hdd, or, better an ssd for the system and an hdd, that's what a pro system is about these days, that's what being in the forefront of innovation means, not using years old tired configurations and asking for premium $. UNACCEPTABLE.

It's obvious to anyone with an open mind that apple has started to slip and slip a lot, I don't know if it's steves health or the iphone and trying two growth sectors, but they are making so many bad choices that they haven't paid for yet but they will soon. Sad to see this.

Holy rant batman! This laptop has a cool new feature called networking, and can attach itself to "the cloud", formerly known as the internet, which has terabytes, even petabytes, of available hard drive space left. Get an Amazon S3 account if you have storage needs above 320+ GB, or need to "burn" files above 5 GB. Not saying blu-ray wouldn't be nice, but come on - the computer has practically no seams! no visible screws! 5-year battery! Oh, and OS X!

Apple has never played the "we can list more specs on the side of the box than you can" game. As for being locked into iTunes for HD movies, blame the movie industry, not Apple. Wide-spread high-speed internet has been around for at least 7 years, blu-ray just barely won the optical format war. iTunes will have competition in this area soon enough.

I'm so tempted to drop the cash on one of these puppies.. I don't REALLY need it till september anyway and by then I will be able to get better discounts as I will be under HE and not FE Education.

Can anyone provide me with a HE UK price?

From what I've seen, the 17'' MacBook Pro has four very visible screws on the bottom casing, whereas the MacBook and 15'' MacBook Pro have none. Obviously, a non-replaceable battery does have its compromises.

I know a few people who use laptops, they take out the battery and use the power cord to power the laptop- Saves the charges. They then place the battery in the laptop when they are on the go......

I'm dubious about the fixed battery. I use my MBP plugged in 90% of the time. It is on fairly constantly, and that can harm the battery over time. So I take the battery out and just run on the mains. That wouldn't be an option with a fixed battery.

Actually, removing the battery from a notebook while AC is plugged in is a stupid thing to do.

First of all, it makes no difference, your notebook battery will not be damaged even if you keep it a entire month plugged in. You know, the system is intelligent enough at the point that it just knows when is time to cut of the charging process. It does not keep sending energy to the cell when not needed. What keeps the health of a battery is the constant charge and discharge cycles, so, being on the notebook or not will make no difference if it is not being used.

Second, the processor clock of the machine is reduced when you remove the battery. The notebook really needs the battery even when plugged, because the AC does not supply enough power in some situations (thats why the processor clock is reduced when the battery is removed). So you will end up with a very slow machine.

Third, Thats a Magsafe plug, remember? how about you accidentally taking off the plug (thats happen to me eventually) of your so loved Macbook without the battery, an realizing the machine was damaged because it was suddenly powered off?

lol.

I highly dobut we will ever see blu-ray in macs. Steve said he wants to wait till it really pushes off, but hes to intrested in itunes and apple TV. Apple TV doesnt even support true 1080p, nor is there any DVR functionality, so that alone, takes away from the name "apple tv"

not in todays times, apple is crazzy.

The screen? I'm sure its the typical matte. The glossy screens on the macbooks use matte, but that black bezzel whitch is part of the glass display, makes it "glossy"

So your saying to give us a matte screen all apple is doing is removing the glass? Sounds like it should be $50 cheaper then.

Watched this site for a year, and am done.
Will buy Dell, possibly Sony though that's unlikely.

Optical drives will disappear in the future, but not NOW. Blu-ray is NOW.
Upset about all the other stuff people mentioned too, but blu-less "new" Macbook pro is the dealbreaker for me and I'm tired of waiting. It's been a year and EVERYBODY else has it.

That's ridiculous, but so Apple of them to force you to get the more expensive 17-inch if you want a matte screen. Hopefully they'll (re)introduce that option for the 15-inch

So now the HD panel is standard (as the Late 08 17" MBP's)
The battery is supposed to last twice as long.
Still C2D.

With all the extra space... they add a USB port and a bigger battery. Eh...

Early 08 15" MBP Matte (Refurb $1350) FTW. Just think, you can buy two of those for that price.

So What!?

Apple sound really smug with them selves about DMR free music, but surely it should have been done along time ago and surley nobody buys music from iTunes anyway?!...thats what piratebay is for!

Wanna bet?

Not within 1000 recharges...

Even if you charge every day it's almost 3 years, and most likely five years or more---you surely remember storage options from 5 years ago, mucho dollars for a 256MB stick, etc. Are you willing to believe that no breakthroughs will occur in the next 5 years? I'm not.

It is awesome!!!! Well done Apple!

Finally 17" MBP has something more!

Darn it, they should have released the Click-Wheel Macbook today....it might have saved the show!

several points here:

1. To the guy comparing the macbook pro against a dell: the dell has a quadro graphics card, thats in a whole different league to the one in the macbook pro so no wonder it costs more.

2. To the people complaining about lack of blu-ray, what do you need it for? Backups can be done with time machine, and do you really need to watch high definition films on a 17" screen? Wouldn't that just run the battery life down when you are out, and if you are at home would you not watch them on your tv instead?

3. I see no problem with the battery being fixed, If you are going to carry your laptop about for extended periods would you not be better off with a smaller model? Personally, I can count on one hand the number of times my macbook (18 months old) has been used long enough away from a power socket to actually run out of battery. 8 Hours is surely long enough for the vast majority of users.

4. Matte option: I prefer glossy but this is good for those who want it.

I just need some proof for this one. A link a wiki page something.

In all my years working with computers and IT guys fixing my computers I have never heard of the computer needing the battery to run effectively even when plugged in and the AC adaptor not being able to supply enough juice.

I guess it could be accurate since there seems to be a draw from the batt when it's plugged in still, hence the reason to not keep it plugged in all the time.

I don't know, I just use them.
