Apple Releases Aperture 3 With Faces and Places Tagging Features

I spent a long time "training" iPhoto to recognize faces and it never worked vey reliably...honestly reminded me of Newton handwriting recognition. Maybe it'll work some day but not yet. I wish there was a way to automatically sync a folder in my Lightroom library to iPhoto though.

showing dates, etc...

This may be a stupid question, but like many of you I stopped using Aperture because of lack of updates and I go between mostly iPhoto/Photoshop and periodically LR but didn't really do a full switch .... anyway what I'm wondering from those of you who have either downloaded the new version or stuck with Aperture is whether or not it's possible to have the scrolling info show the date etc of the pictures while scrolling through massive libraries. I have under 10,000 photos but a lot of my friends have 3 or more times that easily and it makes it much easier to find a photo (or a memory) when the month and year pop up ... If that along with the new features is available and we see some more continuous updates, I would definitely start using it again and pick up A3.

I have 60K+ in my library. Click on the Metadata tab to show that window, and you will be able to see the image date (or any other metadata you need).

Not sure if 3 will have a pop-up to demarcate the months as you are flying through the library. You also can search/filter results, and look for specific dates...

Well this takes away a little bit . . . ahem ! A LITTLE BIT of the sting after that mediocre ipad announcement.

People are negging this post because Apple didn't upgrade the MacBookPro?

What a bunch of ungrateful children.

I'm betting they feel much the way I do:

- I have my tax return
- I was already in the market for a new laptop
- I can't justify buying one til Apple updates them
- My tax return is burning a hole in my left buttock.

one-click exporting.... with Aperture

What I disliked? Lets say you are browsing some photos and you want to copy a photo to desktop; Instead of dragging the pic (just to copy a small res copy), you have to click export/versions and choose where. Another thing is the Aperture Database. Instead of having the photos in folders, you have one big file. It's good because you can back it up easily (to some external HD) but you can't use the spotlight search, you have to open aperture to do it. It's not big deal but its MY opinion.

You can export any image by control/clicking on it, a pop-up menu will appear with lots of options (including the export master or edited version).

I would stay away from Spotlight searches anyway, as you might be tempted to move stuff around from within the Finder... which is NEVER a good idea for any database driven ap. Yes, you do have to open the ap... but you are less likely to accidently muck about and create problems (my two cents at least).

You can fairly easily get into the Aperture database package, but I am not going to tell you how. It is a recipe for disaster, but easily found if you want to find the info...
cheers,
michael

So rating Aperture as a 'negative' helps you? Well why don't you go protest outside a Foot Locker or a Burger King too? And let's go on Amazon and give poor feedback to books we've never read!

What else can we trash that has nothing to do with laptops?

If you're using Aperture you shouldn't have a need for Faces :-(

Why not? It's great for event photograpy where you need to organize by whos in a particular picture. Good marketing opportunity too b/c you can post pics by person to target sales. Makes it easier to sell where a party attendee might otherwise not want to scan 100s of proofs.

This looks fantastic, and I've already ordered my upgrade.

So utterly bizarre that people would rate this negative. Unless you made a non-free plug-in for Aperture that's no been rendered obsolete (FlickrExport), this upgrade is either a positive or doesn't affect you in anyway.

The sense of entitlement some people have is ridiculous.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing. Between the iPad and today, I think maybe they should rename MacRumors to MacBabies. Instead of giving out Woots! posters give out Wah Wahs! :D

I personally welcome the addition of faces and places. Not because I think they are super killer features, but because for some people they can be useful and why should a Pro who paid the pro price tag have to bounce between the consumer product and the professional product. The professional product in my opinion should have all of the features of the consumer product available, and the pro features on top of that.

Are you seriously upset about a feature being included that you don't have use?

Yeah, the Faces hate-on is perplexing. This seems like a feature that would be just as valuable to the pro shooter as the home user, if not more.

Loving it. Quality update.

Why all the negative ratings? That just people wishing it was Macbook Pros?

Your toys will come! You gotta let other people get their share too!

Faces does a great job of recognising my wife's plush dolls...

I tried Picasa, iPhoto, Bridges (adobe) and Aperture. My (noob) impressions:

Picasa: I like the easy adjustments but a little messy. Make a copy of the file (increasing HD use). cpu hog

iPhoto: I loved the Events idea to organize photos but nor the overall files organization. What I dislike was the performance for large amount of photos.

Bridges: It's more like Windows Explorer. I quite like it. What I disliked? cpu use increase a lot while browsing the photos.

Aperture: It's the ONLY one nice to the cpu, nice browsing styles, etc (it's a pro app). What I disliked? Lets say you are browsing some photos and you want to copy a photo to desktop; Instead of dragging the pic (just to copy a small res copy), you have to click export/versions and choose where. Another thing is the Aperture Database. Instead of having the photos in folders, you have one big file. I was thinking about trying LightRoom 3(beta) but I'm sick of Adobe products. They're all getting bloated and you have to install a bunch of "married" applications.

Bibble is another that you might want to try. It's built for speed (though I would love to see feedback of Aperture 3 running on a dual processor Nehalem Mac Pro).

When will Apple buy their own satellite images so we can get rid of that ugly Google logo, now when it's even inside Aperture?

Great update otherwise.

+1, it's just snobbery.

I'm an amateur photographer who likes the idea of Aperture for my serious work, but I also like some of the features that iPhoto gives me, including Faces. In fact, I'm even unashamed to say that I use the MobileMe/Facebook/Flickr integration - does anyone know if that's been carried over to Aperture?

Is it not possible to be a good photographer and still get some fun out of the hobby? It's like those "pro" photographers who have lost the ability to take family holiday snaps because every picture they take has got to be beautifully composed and technically perfectl.

Well stated. Welcome to the real world of photography. Also remember, every forum has members to promote others products.

It has ProPhoto RGB support for external editor files! You can even choose any profile you want for external edits.

This is really one kick ass update. The people whining have NO idea what they're talking about!

Oh well Apple, that's another week gone and a Mac Expo advantage missed too.
Never mind, they have till the 20th/ 21st February before I'll be buying that Alienware M11X.
To be honest I'm not expecting great hardware updates with the graphics anyway. But I could be proven wrong come next Tuesday?
And I agree, Apple really seem to want to hate Adobe!!! Seems a good way to alienate a majority of your customers?

Does she have one that looks like your mother?:D

Running at 64 bit is good news too, has Adobe bothered to do this for the mac yet? (trick question, of COURSE they have not).

Sorry if this has already been answered I haven't read the whole thread.

But Adobe Lightroom 2 was 64 bit for Mac when it was released in July 2008. (source)

See their statement explaining why on PCs get 64bit...

"Photoshop CS4 for Microsoft® Windows Vista® runs 64-bit native.
In early testing of 64-bit support in Photoshop for Windows®, overall performance gains ranged from 8% to 12%. Those who work with extremely large files may realize noticeably greater gains in performance, in some cases as dramatic as ten times the previous speed.

The Mac OS 64-bit version is planned for a future release as a result of a change to Apple's platform strategy, which now requires a migration from Apple's Carbon technology to its Cocoa technology in order for an application to run 64-bit native. Before 64-bit support can be added on Mac OS, significant parts of Photoshop and its plug-ins must first be ported from Carbon to Cocoa. The Photoshop team began working on porting Photoshop to Cocoa as soon as Apple announced 64-bit support in Carbon was no longer part of its plans." (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/photoshop/faq/)
And that is perfectly reasonable and true. Apple said Carbon was going to be 64 bit and then changed their minds. That was kinda a spanner in the works.
