I find it interesting that Apple needs to take down its web store at all for product updates. What, is everything a static HTML page? Does Amazon go down for two hours every time a new product is added?

Apple doesn't use a CMS (content management system). They hand code their pages using BBEdit unless something has changed.

waiting for reviews + LR3

I am one of the people who jumped ship over to LR2 when Aperture seemed like it was never getting updated. I'm going to wait for some reviews and LR3 to get released before I decide to 'switch back'.

Modest

No **** really? Leave that bunk ass **** to iPhoto.

Some ******* will say that Aperture is better because it has faces.

I love the inappropriate use of stars. "ass ****" ?! Fantastic! Hole is not a dirty word! :D

No upgrade for many of us

Anyone else noticed that Aperture 3 requires an "Intel-based Mac computer"? No support for G4/G5 processors this time.

That was the first thing I noticed. I can't afford a new computer and won't be able to for some time so it looks like I must be content with Aperture 2

With the exception of layering, and type... Aperture is indeed in the same league as pshop, and in many ways the far superior beast. I use Aperture professionally and work on tens of thousands of images each year. Aperture2 blows the doors off photoshop in many ways, and is FAR easier to learn and actually start being productive than photoshop. For over a year now 90% of all of my imaging takes place within Aperture, and I can get better results in a lot faster time frame.

Interesting. I find that I still need to go to PS for some things, simply because the layers and masking allow a level of control I can't get anywhere else. With the release of these new 'brushes' in A3, it might solve the issue of masking and layering somewhat, but I'm curious how you manage the same things in A2.

Heaven knows, I WANT to use only one software package, but I still find my best shots PP come out of PS.

I'm very happy with this news. I was a little surprised that the Web Export feature doesn't seem to have received an update (or, if it has, then they aren't mentioning it much) but aside from that it looks like solid update that will hopefully require less time making a trip off to Photoshop. Since I consider myself an Aperture junkie news like this is more welcome to me than a new Mac. Now I just need to wait until payday and then kick the tires properly to see what the new version is like.

Apple has some great laptops, I recommend one of them highly. :p

I appreciate the tip there Ma, indeed there are some great Apple laptops out. Unfortunately I don't own one- my PB G4 just got obsolete-ified!! (definitely a word. I checked.) ;)

Aperture 3 - ready for Valentines

Great, so even those very few geeks, who have a girlfriends, will spend Valentines modifying stupid pictures!

Aperture is indeed intended for high end imaging and creation...

No - the software focus if different from Photoshop. The closest comparison to Aperture from Adobe is Lightroom. Photoshop is in a league of it's own and is intended to do different things. Aperture is Photo post production - not high end editing and creation.

Only beating a dead horse because...
Aperture is imaging coupled with image management. I use Aperture primarily for imaging first, and archiving/organizing second. With the exception of layers, and type (sorry to repeat myself)... Aperture is superior to photoshop in many, many ways. I can blow through images a LOT faster in Aperture, and with better results. I am no novice either, and have been using pshop for many years (and teaching other professionals as well).

Curious how many folks can rank this new version with a negative. Just because the Apple widget they wanted didn't come out? Where is the bad news in this?

Apple's usual upgrade implementation asks for your new key, and then for the old one you upgraded from. You shouldn't need anything from Aperture 2, as their installers are self-contained full programs.

You'll find a selection to purchase an upgrade from its Apple Store page, on the right. It changes the price to $99. Make sure you have your old serial.

Will an Aperture 2 upgrade key suffice for upgrading to Aperture 3? I don't have the full AP2 key and can't find my AP1 key.

This may be a stupid question, but like many of you I stopped using Aperture because of lack of updates and I go between mostly iPhoto/Photoshop and periodically LR but didn't really do a full switch .... anyway what I'm wondering from those of you who have either downloaded the new version or stuck with Aperture is whether or not it's possible to have the scrolling info show the date etc of the pictures while scrolling through massive libraries. I have under 10,000 photos but a lot of my friends have 3 or more times that easily and it makes it much easier to find a photo (or a memory) when the month and year pop up ... If that along with the new features is available and we see some more continuous updates, I would definitely start using it again and pick up A3.

I tried Picasa, iPhoto, Bridges (adobe) and Aperture. My (noob) impressions:

Picasa: I like the easy adjustments but a little messy. Make a copy of the file (increasing HD use). cpu hog

iPhoto: I loved the Events idea to organize photos but nor the overall files organization. What I dislike was the performance for large amount of photos.

Bridges: It's more like Windows Explorer. I quite like it. What I disliked? cpu use increase a lot while browsing the photos.

Aperture: It's the ONLY one nice to the cpu, nice browsing styles, etc (it's a pro app). What I disliked? Lets say you are browsing some photos and you want to copy a photo to desktop; Instead of dragging the pic (just to copy a small res copy), you have to click export/versions and choose where. Another thing is the Aperture Database. Instead of having the photos in folders, you have one big file. It's good because you can back it up easily (to some external HD) but you can't use the spotlight search, you have to open aperture to do it. It's not big deal but its MY opinion.

I was thinking about trying LightRoom 3(beta) but I'm sick of Adobe products. They're all getting bloated and you have to install a bunch of "married" applications.
