I tried Picasa, iPhoto, Bridges (adobe) and Aperture. My (noob) impressions:

Aperture: ...Lets say you are browsing some photos and you want to copy a photo to desktop; Instead of dragging the pic (just to copy a small res copy), you have to click export/versions and choose where...

You can turn on automatic generation of previews upon import, or by project, simply select the project, then click the gear icon and check the "Maintain Previews for Project" item.

Apple today announced the release of Aperture 3, adding over 200 new features to the company's professional photo editing and management application. The updated version includes the Faces and Places tagging features introduced in iPhoto last year, as well as a new feature called Brushes for making painting image adjustments to photos. Also included are Adjustment Presets, which offer one-click options for applying specific styles or looks to entire images.Aperture 3, which runs as a 64-bit application on Intel Core 2 Duo Macs running Mac OS X Snow Leopard, is available for a suggested retail price of $199, with existing Aperture users able to upgrade for $99. A downloadable 30-day trial is also available.

so...still a gazillion years behind adobe lightroom 2.0 , then...

What is considered a huge library? Our family does point and shoot and have about 5k - 6k photos. Is this considered large or would Aperture even help me? It's currently managed using iPhoto 09 which seems to lag a bit.

Try this. It really helped speed up iPhoto for me.

Wtf?

People are negging this post because Apple didn't upgrade the MacBookPro?

What a bunch of ungrateful children.

No layers! That is what I was hoping for most. At least we got curves. I really like Aperture, so I will hang in there and wait for layers to be added. Soon, I hope.

At this point, I am considering using Aperture to hold my personal photo library, because iPhoto just isn't working for me.

I can't however see this update as anything that would keep me from dropping Aperture and moving to Lightroom 3. The update is nice, and brings well needed improvements but nothing that I would see as being head over heals above Lightroom or what Lightroom 3 may bring to the table.

Don't get me wrong, I was an Aperture user since day 1 and library organization is still something Adobe has failed to get right, but as far as a one stop shop for ingestion, editing, toning, and adjustments LR has won me over.

I will miss the quick and dirty proof books and web uploads to Mobile Me though.

No Lens Correction? :-(

Photoshop, here I go...

And no word on OpenCL, GCD, etc? "Lead by example", Apple... :p

Ok, I've requested a serial number three times now and have gotten three blank emails...

So frustrated! Apple still doesn't support the Micro 4/3 format in RAW (data contains lens correction) in Aperture 3's core imaging.

That means my wonderful Lumix DMC-GF1's RAW files are invisible to Aperture, and I will have to stay with Lightroom. I was SO HOPING that Aperture 3 would return me to the Apple fold.

I'm currently experimenting with Lightroom 3 beta, and it's a good, capable application, but it lacks the workflow/ease-of-use that I enjoy in my Apple software.

When Lightroom 3 comes out of beta, I'll have to make a choice. I'm unlikely to want to move thousands of images out of LR into Aperture. I very much hope that AP3 will support my camera of choice (this format is increasingly popular world-wide too) sometime soon.

Could someone tell if upgrading from iPhoto to Aperture would make my photo library of 30 Gigs work faster. Does it accommodate for video clips taken by the iPhone? Is it really worth the money?

Yes, if you signed up for trial, resubmit form

As someone just mentioned, I can confirm: I signed up first thing for the Aperture 3.0 trial, and nothing showed up. I just resubmitted the form, and the confirmation e-mail immediately showed up.

About the only thing I'm really interested in at this stage is:

Is it any FASTER than version 2?

The other question is whether it supports direct tethering with Nikon DSLRs or whether it still requires Nikon software to do so.

Asking for direct Hasselblad support would be asking for too much, I suppose.

I find it pretty absurd that anyone would downrate this story based on the fact that the Apple Store update was just to introduce Aperture 3 and had nothing to do with the release of new MacBook Pros... though I guess maybe it's easier for me to say that based on the fact that I'm as happy as can be with my A-MB and didn't sell it on a whim based on a number of rumor sites "predicting" that the update would be today.

but I digress... I've been using Aperture for almost a year after switching from PS (which I had been using for over 5yrs), and it still has all the features I need in a photo-editing app. I still use iPhoto for all of my organizing, so I don't really have any use for Faces/Places in Aperture, but I'm still glad to see a new release and am looking forward to using it (once I can afford the additional $99 :)).

If I download the trial, can I upgrade that to the full version as a download, or do I still need a physical copy??

No - the software focus if different from Photoshop. The closest comparison to Aperture from Adobe is Lightroom. Photoshop is in a league of it's own and is intended to do different things. Aperture is Photo post production - not high end editing and creation.

Got it. Thanks for he info.

If I download the trial, can I upgrade that to the full version as a download, or do I still need a physical copy??

At startup, you get the option to "Authenticate" with a purchased serial, so I believe you can do without a physical copy.

For those of you using the trial:

Does it "feel" the same? Are the key shortcuts the same and is the look/feel similar enough where an Ap2 user will feel at home?
