A quote off of COMPUTER ARTS MAGAZINE regarding the glossy screen on the MBP,...

"some people find that the colour fidelity isn’t as precise as it needs to be for high-quality print work."

The truth is: professionals simply DO NOT play around with glossy screens. No matter how much glossy-fans try to believe that they do. Almost all LCD monitors are matte (go look at the 24-inch iMac screen or the Apple Cinema Displays and tell me that the blacks don't look black) high end monitors don't have cheap, consumer-line glossy screens. Sure industry leaders like Samsung make glossy displays, but only in their TELEVISION lines. I have never (and someone correct me if I am wrong) seen a freakin' glossy Samsung computer monitor. I am not saying that glossys don't look superior, but in professional line of work, color accuracy is better in the "anti-glare" (or matte) displays.

Any chance Apple is ONLY using perpendicular drives in the entire line now...no?...yeah didn't think so either.

Just wanted to note as my first post here.....UCLA has just updated their pricing for UCLA students and faculty and they're offering the mid-range MBP Pro 15" for $1,999! That's $500 less than the retail price and $300 less than the academic price!

L2 cache bump question

I have a black macbook arriving today but have 14 days to return it, so if there are C2D updates over the next two tuesdays, I could get the update.

I don't really understand the L2 cache thing. I will use the macbook for writing in word, surfing the net in airports, and running powerpoint presentations - am I going to notice any significant performance benefit from the likely change?

Thanks, Reggie

I just thought I'd chime in:
The matte and glossy, both new mbps my friends had, were practically identical. I was looking for color difference. It seemed like the glossy had more vivid and defined colors, but I'm not sure if it was a biased conclusion since I was looking for that in the first place.

My solution:
I'm buying a new 2.33 17" with glossy, even though I am a video editor because I will only be do hard core color correcting and video editing when I am at home infront of my desk monitor that will be true accurate, or if I am using the portable sony monitors on set. So it seemed dumb for me to convince myself I needed true colors on a screen only really used soley for watching movies and surfing the net.

That's my thoughts.

Ok this is creepy or just weird. I just got a text from the "Apple Store" stating that "An Apple Shipment (insert order number) is on its way to you. To check status pls visit www.store.apple.com/uk/orderstatus".

This is definately a first.

Edit: i just checkd..Its SHIPPED!, OMG that was FAST!.

Edit 2: Thought i'd include a screenshot

Est delivery on the actual Apple page is Nov 1, i'm hoping it gets here by friday

finally

finally! :). Just ordered mine ...

MBP 17inch standard
(wanted to go 15inch but since they took so long to come out I've had the time to save up more money ;-) )
Glossy (just want to see for myself... always had a matte screen)
Mighty mouse wireless

Hope it arrives fast :)

Well, I just ordered my first Mac. While I've used them for a long time, I've never really wanted to buy one. Plus, I was one of the folks that held out to get C2D. Another great factor is that I work for a University, so I can score that EDU discount.

I bought the following configuration:

15in Non-Glossy MBP
2.16 Ghz
2G Ram
160G HDD

Total with Applecare came to about 2400$ with tax. Not too bad. I should have it by the end of next week according to my order status. Can't wait!!

Man you are lucky, if you don't mind can I ask what time you ordered and whether it was over the phone or internet, thanks.

Apple's zooming trackpad:
The trackpad now supports screen zooming, much like the keyboard-based Zoom feature in the
Universal Access System Preference pane. When holding down a user-selectable modifier key (in
the Keyboard & Mouse System Preference pane), gesturing with a forward finger motion on the
trackpad will cause the image on the screen to zoom in. The reverse motion will zoom out.

From the service manual.

Try reading the thread...

Here's a clue - a Conroe MBP will probably glow red underneath...

Thanks... So it is Merom... Actually, I read the first 20 pages or so of the thread which has more than 1,000 posts but could not find such information!!!

Thanks again.

Hmm I ordered at about 2pm (in the UK) over the phone but with HE discount, no notification yet.

I used HE discount as well so it'll probably happen by the end of the day

Well my new macbook pro (2.16) cost me 1600 + 100. Students can sign up for the ADC program which is a rate of 100 dollars and you get 20% your total purchase then, plus you get all OS's and other good apple software mailed to you! but the 2500 dollar macbook then becomes 2000 dollars...I couldnt justify the extra 400 for it to my self, oh well. I'm sure I will be very happy

There's only one report so far from daneoni so we can't draw any correlations yet.

c2d mbp's already shipping?! for the people who are like me and are waiting for the apple stores to receive new mbp's...THIS IS GREAT NEWS!

the apple stores may get them in today, most likely tomorrow. i remember reading a posting here on this board with someone saying mbp's WILL be released on the 24th and would appear in the stores on the 26/27th. he was right with the launch date so he's probably right with the store date.

Heh. Doesn't seem that long ago to me that the 40 MHz Mac IIfx was "wicked fast". That was Apple's tagline for it. I mean, damn, it was 40 times faster than an Apple II! I am getting old...
Ha! I remember when the FX was the "special" machine in our studio and only the top designers got to use it. It's all relative. I think these new 'books are fantastic and are now a true desktop replacement. I'm at the point where I'm not even considering a MacPro just because I can't imagine that I'd ever need that amount of raw power. I'm using a first gen MBP right now and aside from CS2 in Rosetta (which is usable) the thing just screams compared to all of the G4 systems I just sold off. C2D with Leopard and native CS3 is going to be a dream. Now I just need to decide between a 15" and a 17" MBP.

hmmmm wonder if i should stick with my matter screen or call up apple and change to the glossy...BUT i dont want to hold my order up...mine as well just stick with the matte...
