"Positive discrimination"? What perchance could that be? You mean: Discrimination against White males.

Taken from a quick Google because I couldn't be bothered typing:

Positive discrimination is the process of giving preferential treatment, especially in employment, to minority groups of society that have been prejudiced against in the past. It should be noted that ‘preferential treatment’ does not mean that these individuals will automatically be preferred to another candidate, but rather should two candidates be deemed a similar level, the individual from the minority group will be preferred.

For example, should two candidates who are equally matched in skills go for a job and one is from a minority group and one isn’t, then positive discrimination will see that the former candidate will receive the job offer.

The idea of positive discrimination came from the US where an ‘affirmative action’ programme has been used to try and ensure the make-up of certain work places reflects that of society. It should be noted that under UK law you cannot discriminate against somebody because of their race, sex or social background as that would be against the law.

Then get rid of your Apple products. You wouldn't want to support a company that supports Jackson and Sharpton. Otherwise your talk is cheap.

Focus is lost. In two years they have brilliantly invented a phone with a screen 0.7 inches larger. I'm feeling kinda done at this point.

Well, they did create a helluva nice ARM processor just last year, and added a bunch of cool features in the meantime. No, it hasn't been as amazing as the unveiling of the iPhone or iPad, but it's unreasonable to expect events that big ever other year. That's a once in every two decade thing.

In the tech world, no matter how big a deal it was, no matter how much it changed everything, it inevitably gets hitched to the same old boring incremental update bandwagon sooner or later. It's not that Apple, Google, MS, et al. are getting lazy. It's that there's only so much you can do with a brand new technology before it becomes standard.

I think hiring quotas are the wrong way to go, and it is illegal to discriminate based on race or gender. If they genuinely think females or racial minorities are underrepresented, they should consider how to attract more of those applicants.

You are being paranoid, and on their end that would be illegal.

You are factually wrong. Legally it is permissible to discriminate against white people. This is both statutory and backed up by tens of thousands of pages of case law.

I read your response. It was as irrational as all your other posts.

Care to point out what was specifically irrational? I don't consider myself a particularly irrational person, though I accept that rationality can be hard to judge in yourself. If you can provide some compelling reason for categorizing my post as irrational, then by all means do so, and I'll become a better person as a result.

On another note, "all" of my other posts? This is my fourth on this thread, and only one of my prior posts (the one you were supposedly commenting on) contained an actual argument. Have you been stalking me across the MacRumors forums?

Amen. Diversity just for the sake of "diversity" is a steaming pile....best person for the job. PERIOD!!!

This is what happens when an inmate ends up running the asylum.

You say that as though what is going on is not deliberate.

If you can't understand semantics, that speaks more to your education than anything else.

Ah yes, the final resort to ad hominem. lol. How much longer do you think that will work?

If you are, a source would be nice to back up that statement.:p

That response doesn't even make sense because they are wanting the same reports for other companies. The race baiters only play the race card for personal gain. Apple and every other company should tell them to **** and go away.

I noticed you didn't deny what I said. Truth hurts.

It's silly to call for diversity when Tim Cook himself continues to hide his homossexuality. Is this the kind of example he wants to set at Apple? "Stay hidden and don't tell anyone about it"?

How are you so damn sure that he is gay and even if he is how is it your ****ing concern?

As a shareholder I would like to see to see Tim stop using Apple to advance his political agenda. Apple should be about making the best products, not being politically correct.

Hiring vs. Encouraging

Hiring for the sake of diversity and making sure you're encouraging diversity are two different things.

FOR EXAMPLE:
If you're recruiting by primarily going to universities where all the students are mostly white isn't encouraging diversity, making sure you're recruiting from a diverse pool helps diversity.

Making sure your postings appear in places that a diverse population WILL see them helps too.

How is it any of our concern what the make up of Apple's workforce is? And yet Apple voluntarily released that information.

Really now?? :D:D:D:D:D

This is interesting.

Tell me more about what "agenda" he is pushing. Didn't you think the 2013 rMBP's were good? Personally I really enjoy mine.

Oh look guys! Let's play spot the conservatives!

I think I caught one!

So the answer is no. I'm not a supporter of gay marriage or global warming so I'm sure Cook would never hire me. Diverse is fine so long as it confirms to the majority political view inside the walls of the mothership.

A rumour about him being gay is NOT
The same as a diversity report. You don't care about diversity? Fine. Who told you to read this article? Were you held at gun point?

The way you keep on, it sounds to me like you are using this as an excuse for your own failure to get on in life.

LOL! "Supporter of global warming"

No one here is a supporter of global warming, it's a real phenomenon which very may well destroy the planet as we currently know it.

Now tell me, what's wrong with gay marriage? How does it affect you? Do you have to give up some of your rights?

But Apple hasn't told them to go away, which by your logic Apple loves the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons, which means Apple hates the white man.

You should smash all your Apple products now. Or be a hypocrite and wait in line for the iPhone 6. :apple:

It annoys me to see how Apple have doctored their statistics to make the white percentage look as low as possible. If you look at this pie chart (courtesy of Ars technica) you'll see that the 55% whites are counted separately from those who didn't declare their race.

Screen-Shot-2014-08-12-at-10.30.02-AM.png

So we are to assume that NONE of the 9% undeclared are white? No, this pie chart shouldn't include the yellow segment at all. The fraction of workers who are white (based on the data we actually have) is 55/91, which is just over 60%.

You are basing your decisions off the most literal observation of the definition with no context of history, culture, or societal norms. What the dictionary definition doesn't account for is that our society is one built upon white male privilege. Where discrimination against everyone else was the status quo. Was it positive discrimination when women and minorities were afforded the right to vote, the right to drink out of the same water fountain, the right to be treated as equals?

No, it was simply creating equality, affording rights that one group had to every group. And before you infer that I'm saying minorities and women have a right to a job (they don't), they have a right to not be discriminated against when applying for that job. As much as you don't think it happens, it does, currently and consistently. This is what things like affirmative action, diversity reports attempt to correct, our history and our societal norms. And while they are far from perfect systems, they're a start in the right direction.

If you observe the most basic definition of discrimination then I guess you are technically right. All in all, this is an argument of semantics and I don't think it's what not actually what we disagree on. (I could be wrong though)

This is the main part of our disagreement. The fact that you don't believe there is a pre-existing bias of discrimination when history tells you there was and there still is. And this is where our definition of discrimination differs, because you don't think there's an issue to correct. And I do.

The goal will be reached when race and discrimination don't matter. And I'm not talking about Apple, I'm talking largely of our society. None of which we will see in our lifetime or the next two.

There are a lot of people here who act as if the past never happened.

I am pretty confident that Apple will not start hiring "B" and "C" candidates in the name of being more "racial-" or gender-diverse. What would be cool is if they put more effort in finding potential "A-level" candidates of color in the world's universities, and grooming and recruiting people for the company. If Apple would make some STEM developments in developing nations, encouraging some of the best and brightest into STEM, then cultivating future talent.

As someone who happens to be a Black American, it is something that I would like to see. Hire the best, I have no problem with that. However, I laud Apple in committing to an effort to find (and hopefully cultivate) new talent...that is an untapped resource for new ideas.

Sheesh! Didn't you read the article? Tim said he's "not satisfied" with the diversity numbers. What do you think he meant by that? That they need to hire more white males?

Diversity should be achieved by picking the best person for the job, any other metric taints people you employ as being quota hires:

During his tenure as CEO, Cook has taken steps towards improving Apple's diversity by boosting Apple's female leadership. Cook hired Angela Ahrendts as the head of retail and Susan Wagner was recently added to Apple's board, joining existing female board member Andrea Jung. Cook has also overseen the hire of Lisa Jackson, who oversees the company's environmental affairs, and the promotion of Denise Young Smith to head of human resources. Apple is a sponsor of the National Center for Women & Information Technology, which aims to get women involved in technology.

So do Ahrendts and Wagner appreciate being quota hires brought in to boost Apple's female leadership diversity?
