We're talking about this article, which clearly states that "only three out of 10 employees around the globe are female" as if somehow Apple's ignoring an overwhelming female tide of software developers and industrial designers or something.

This is a race to the bottom. Perhaps everyone should be handicapped at birth to be made "equal". Spray everybody a "neutral" color and cut their feet off if they're too tall.

The overly sensitive ones getting offended left, right and center by this sort of stuff aren't people, they're the media and politicians looking for a new bus to ride to promote themselves.

Normal people don't give a rat's ass about these so-called transparency reports.

Here here. In my opinon its either a ploy for votes or a ploy to keep us fighting amongst ourselves so we don't realize how we're being screwed by the government.

Class warfare, race warfare, gender warfare - its all perpetrated by those in power to stay in power. Sure humans are flawed and we have our prejudices and stereotypes (of course, stereotypes only exists because on some level they have truth to them), but as a whole we've come a long way.

Take the Donald Sterling incident for instance. Bill O'Reilly (whether you agree with him or not) said it best. While our President was in some other country railing on the state of racism in America saying it was still a huge problem, O'Reilly was correctly analyzing the reality. As a society, we crucified Sterling. The general consensus is that the man is a pig, a scumbag and deserves to be ousted. Racism will always exists because human nature comes with prejudices and we don't always think before we act.

But as a whole, we condemn people like Donald Sterling. He quickly became the most hated man in America.

especially since Hispanic isnt a race

True, though there are demographic numbers to back that up....

In reality, the US is about 79% White.

Here's the problem with simply being colorblind and "hiring the best".

You want to hire people with the most potential, to invest in them, and to bring them to them to their very best so that you have the very best.

Potential is difficult to measure. But theoretically, it should be evenly distributed amoungst men and women, all races, etc. Some people won't currently have the skills you need, not because they lack the potential, but because they have thus far lacked the opportunity to grow and develop.

So, you try to divide up your hiring by background. Hire the best people based on their current skills with each kind of background - theoretically that'll yield the workforce with the best potential.

"We don't have enough women, so we will hire more women (discriminating men [because it should be "best person", not "enough men" or "enough women"]) to show you how we don't discriminate anyone."

Sounds like a really good idea.

P.S.
Those who don't think Cook is gay just ask your gay cousin if he thinks Cook is gay. Simple as that.

At what point can we stop looking at people in terms of their race, and instead just view them as people? In five years? In ten? In fifty?

How about now?

Would be nice but will never happen under Tim Cook. He's turning Apple into one of the most political correct companies out there. Shame really.

It's silly to call for diversity when Tim Cook himself continues to hide his homossexuality. Is this the kind of example he wants to set at Apple? "Stay hidden and don't tell anyone about it"?

I can't call you an idiot, because that will get me into trouble with Macrumors, so I'll just say Tim is doing a pretty lousy job of hiding the fact that he is gay. Maybe you'd prefer he flame a little bit more, so he fits into that niche that you think homosexuals should be in? I can tell you that I am heterosexual and I've never told anyone that I was! Am I hiding my sexual preference?

Maybe because he isn't a homosexual? Or even if he is, who he's dating is none of our business. Sexual preference does not determine who you are as a person.

But Apple seems to think so as they specifically called it out in their diversity report.

lol what? He is a business executive. His sexuality and private life is none of your business nor any business of Apple's or even the market.

No, that's what I'm saying. We try to take this "equality" thing so far to the point we're hurting ourselves making sure everything is equal.

My point was tongue-in-cheek.

For example, if a public university released diversity statistics that showed 15% Hispanic, 13% Black, 5% Asian and 67% White, people would have a cow. Yet that's the demographic make up of this country.

Why these reports are even necessary is idiotic to begin with.

As a White male growing up in Northern California (in Richmond - a serious ghetto), I was discriminated against, bullied, robbed, and hated by the "oppressed". I'm very glad to see White America finally waking up to the fact that it is suffering the same racist hatred that it supposedly was guilty of.

Not only that, but let's be real, the players on the court say racial slurs all the time, every game more than likely and nothing happens to them. They aren't forced to retire from the NBA. Why?

And in MY opinion, if someone like Michael Jordan called someone white a white racial slur, it would have been NO WHERE near as a big deal as Sterling's incident.

I remember in one of Chris Rock's standups he was talking about hate crimes. He said, if someone white has road rage and pulls over and beats the guy in the other car, who just happens to be black, its a hate crime to everyone. His response was, actually yea it is, why else did he attack him? He hated him in that moment to attack him, his race (black/African-american) was just a coincidence in the incident.

I really wish the Valley went back to the "we don't give a rat's @$$ what you look like, just be excellent and proactive at your job" model that used to prevail here. [...] What really needs to be looked at is the incredibly monolithic look most chip design teams have these days. They're not white, they're 90% Indian-Pakistani, with a smattering of Chinese people here and there.

So you want companies to hire the best people regardless of skin color, unless its too much of the wrong color? Then somebody needs to do something about it?

Hispanic does have basis for race. But it's way to vague.

That's not true. Hispanic refers to Spain, which is a caucasian nation. Latino refers to the area around Rome in Italy, which is also a caucasian nation.

----------

So does this include diversity of political views, Tim?

Good point Rogifan, but you always take the wishy-washy pseudo-intellectual stance. You're like Brian on Family Guy.

----------

Dear Apple,

Quit worrying about this progressive political crap, and keep your focus on making the best products out there! :)

Sincerely,
T.Will

Apple seems to be losing it.

Funnily enough, I did think this a few weeks ago when there was all the Beats Audio talk going on.

Funny if you look at all the top people in Apple:

Seems all very Old School in who they pick for the top positions does it not?

I'm not saying that racism against whites is not a problem and I feel the pain of anyone of any race that goes through racism. But to say White America faces the same racist hatred as Black America is laughable. Don't compare the size of a pea to a watermelon.

Hey, I love Brian from Family Guy, him and Stewie are by far the best characters imo.

Brian is usually right too, JS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic

The U.S. Census Bureau defines the ethnonym Hispanic or Latino to refer to "a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.", and states that Hispanics or Latinos can be of any race, any ancestry, any ethnicity.

Discrimination against White males in America is not only legal, it's mandated.

Why is his sexuality an issue? His ability to be CEO is not defined by his private sexual preferences. What a bizarre statement!

I'm sorry but this diversity BS thats forced upon us by the political correct plague that sweeps the world is a threat to the great idea of the "best man/woman for the job gets it."

If I ever get turned down for a dreamjob with the reasoning that I was the best candidate but they couldn't hire more of my color/gender, then I would permanently stop applying for jobs and just go on welfare instead. I would not wanna partake in a workforce that is based on such a ridiculous idea.

Sorry, but I found the idea of purposely hiring minorities for the sake of "diversity" ridiculous. Hire the best person for the job, not the one who'll improve your diversity report numbers.

They are qualified. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Guess what ? People are racist and they often like their own around them.

This is white America. Most powerful people are white. Where does that leave minorities?

That's why you have hiring laws.

So you want companies to hire the best people regardless of skin color, unless its too much of the wrong color? Then somebody needs to do something about it?

No, he's stating that there is reverse discrimination going on in Silicon Valley. Are you advocating for discrimination against White people?

Why is his sexuality an issue? His ability to be CEO is not defined by his private sexual preferences. What a bizarre statement!

Agreed, but then why is race the only topic that warrants a 'diversity' report? While we're at it, it should also include wheelchair-bound employees and those with curly red hair.

I'm being facetious of course, this diversity stuff is pretty laughable to me.

They should have a question on their forms: "Do you speak fluent, clear, unbroken, comprehensible English?" "Is English your first language?"

So often I encounter sales people that I cannot understand or have difficulty communicating with simply because of a clear language barrier or a lack of command of the English language. Command of the English language needs to not only be preferred, but a requirement of all workers at a company like Apple, dealing with people from all backgrounds in the US here on a daily basis.
