I’m on public beta, so disregard if you’re a developer.
my experience with the PB was trying - it only would allow me to install over Catalina. I had to install Catalina on a separate container (I wanted to keep Catalina separately in case the Beta was too buggy or didn’t support some of my 3rd party apps), install the profile, then download and install Big Sur on it.

Unfortunately, it seems like you might not be an ideal candidate for a public beta. Even the public beta is still a beta and shouldn't be installed on a machine that you use for work or your primary machine because of issues like this.

I think Apple maybe need to tweak some language around the public beta still being _beta_ software. It's going to be buggy, debug mode is still going to be enabled (slowing things down), and do thinks that a non-pristine machine will not like.

I think about it like this. If you'd be at all upset if you lost or broke the computer you're considering installing a beta on, don't install the beta on it.

Installing the PB was a mistake. I hope that switching back to the Developer version will fix the probs that I have had with slow, SLOW startup time.

After stopping/restarting the download and my iMac several times and even deleting the install file and starting over I’ve finally got it to start downloading at a somewhat steady pace although it’s still slow (as of now I’m just a tad over 2GB in with about “1 hour remaining”.

This is still unacceptably slow for my connection but it’s better than it was. Yesterday’s iOS updates were done in literally minutes.

PB1 and beta 4 are the same builds.

Are you dual booting? Shouldn't impact Catalina or earlier if you have that set to primary disk boot for boot up times

Yeah, dual booting with Mojave. And Mojave is the default option to boot and its on the internal drive. I use Big Sur on an external TB3 drive.

Is that gap between the transparent sidebar and the white window a new change?

I hope it's a bug. It wasn't there before. It looks off. It seems to be visible in most apps except photos.

The divider was there since beta 3, but the gap looks new to beta 5 (at least based on the screenshot). I am attaching a screenshot from beta 4 for comparison.

The Beta is on a secondary container, not my primary container, but I (and everyone should) appreciate your advise. I may not have made my experience clear.

Must be a bug. It ruins the seamless look and feel. It seems to dissapear when you are in full screen mode. Strangely it is looking fine in the photos app, there is only that little drop shadow.

I've been waiting 3 hours to download the new beta and after finishing the "Preparing the update" stage, I got the "Update failed" error and it started over. I have seen people experiencing similar issue with the previous betas. It is crazy that updates are so big and there's no way for the updates manager to only re-download whatever is corrupted (if it is, in the first place), rather than having to start everything over.

Only ‘issue’ I have with Big Sur is that it made the startup chime ridiculously loud. Has Apple addressed this with this current beta?

Based on my experience, no. Can't get past the Apple logo when rebooting to install Big Sur, either as an upgrade to Catalina or a clean install. The release notes indicate the 2020 iMac is not yet supported.

hm it shows as upgrade for iMac 2020. interesting. So should I stop update :) now?

From the changelog:
Important: macOS Big Sur 11 beta 5 is not currently supported for iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020). If you encounter an installation issue on iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020), you need to reinstall macOS Catalina. Hold down the power button to force restart, and then press Command-R immediately after turning on your Mac. Then, follow instructions to reinstall macOS Catalina from Recovery .
