I’ve got version 0x0061 so what version number should this new update be?
as the article states, to 0x0070. This could mean 9 features were added/changed/eliminated/updated?? There should be an AppleTV+ quiz show each time they release an anonymous update. Participants guess at the details. The winner is awarded a $100 AppleStore gift card. Undisclosed updates, arrogant.

Would like to see a way to either disable or reassign the side (Siri) button, but I doubt they will ever do it. I never use it, but frequently activate it accidentally when trying to pick up the remote and it's annoying.

Anyone else have the issue where Siri won’t listen when activated the first time? I have to repeat commands a second time and then it listens. Hope this fixes that.

Nice... I have a 'high tech' garage door opener that I have to push the button twice to get it to open the damned door. *sigh*

If yours die every other day, there's something wrong with it. I'm amazed with how seldom I need to charge it, and I use it daily.
Yeah, we watch many hours of tv every day, all of it through the ATV, and we only need to charge it every 2-3 months...if that? Something definitely must be wrong there. Maybe your dog sits on it all night or something.

I absolutely hate the sharp edges of the new remote. Hope that's fixed in this firmware update.

Get a $5 case for it, which nicely smoothes out the sharp edges and makes it less likely to get lost in the creases of your couch.

I like the remote. I just wish it had a built in AirTag.

An AirTag would be great, or even just a built-in tiny speaker so we could locate it by sound. After all, it's not the type of device that ever leaves the house, anyway.

I'd count the number of posts of people wondering what version their remote has and see if you ca get cash for them. I'm sure it'll be HUNDREDS! Thousands?

I'd like to see the people attacking Apple actually attack them for this 'undisclosed updates', and no way to 'force' them.

If you are going to make updating part of your product, then amke it so the user can EASILY tell what version the have, and EASILY ENABLE/FORCE THE UPDATE!!!

The original article did not state the firmware number.

Also, the version number difference likely means nothing and is more related to how many builds/tests they made during development.

FWIW, I was having trouble getting my remote firmware updated from 0x0061 to 0x0070.
An earlier post suggested rebooting the AppleTV while the remote was connected to a charging source, and that didn't work.
However, leaving the remote connected to a power source, and putting the AppleTV into Standby (holding power button), then coming back about 20-30 minutes later, the remote firmware was updated. W00t!

Cant the Apple 4K (1st and 2nd gen) also connect Bluetooth keyboards, say the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and also connect to an Apple trackpad? Cause if so that’s awesome. Can’t it also Connect to a PS4 and PS5 controller?

Alongside it being able to connect to 2 HomePods for stereo sound or 2 ppl w/ 2 sets of AirPods…. I’m guessing 2 ppl watching thru their own AirPods is limited to 1 movie being watched by up to 2 ppl??? Kinda a drag but cool cause I also watch a lot of movies with just one other person.

I really wanna get an Apple TV and considering im not getting it to game I’m thinking I may be down for even the 1st gen 4K with the sleek black glass remote since many say that’s a great* one.

*the greater one.

I just really need to upgrade my television streaming experience AWAY from my stock Samsung TV laggy apps.

I find the click wheel very annoying as in most apps you can’t spin it to advance or rewind videos. Apple should make it mandatory behaviour in all apps.
Exactly this. The original clickwheel Apple TV remote worked with every app. It was especially great in Music (then, iTunes), because it let you effortlessly scroll through a very large music library. It would be great now in so many parts of the Apple TV, but the scrolling is both too difficult (having to pause and wait for the scroll wheel thingy is stupid) and doesn't work except where specifically programmed.

So how do you update it? I've had it since launch and never updated it before. Also how do you know what version you have?
While there is no "official" way to update, I've found with the remote, as well as AirPods and the MagSafe "puck" chargers, the easiest and fastest way is to plug the device into my MacBook and wait a few minutes (specifically this works for the AirPods and MagSafe chargers).

For the Siri remote the TV is what generates the update and pushes it to the remote. So the best way to do the remote is to connect it to power (doesn't have to be the MacBook) and then go into the Apple TV settings -> system -> "restart." Once the TV restarts, press a button on the remote while leaving it connected to power. Now the TV will recognize it, see it's charging, check for and start the download. You'll know when it's finished because the "Remote Charging" notification will pop up again on the TV screen.

I like to check before I begin the process by going into the remote settings and looking at the version and then again after to confirm.

The new Firmware Version is 0x0070, up from 0x0061
