Had this actually been released today and had it fixed the proximity sensor issue...

I wouldn't be going to my local Verizon store tomorrow to pick up a Droid X that I reserved earlier today. I will be going to the AT&T store that's just down the road from the Verizon store as soon as the number port is complete to return the iPhone 4 and get my $200 and change back.

I never thought I'd have to do this, but Apple pushed my buttons by not coming clean on the proximity sensor issue weeks ago and telling us directly if and when a fix would be available. My 30 day return window on iPhone 4 closes a week from tomorrow. I'm done waiting while Apple slowly decides how they're going to handle this debacle on the public stage.

Guys,

It looks like the software fix is included. This is just based on the size of the bars while running 4.1 (see picture). If you remember, Apple said they would increase size of lowest bars to be easier read. I haven't had time to assess anything in regards to signal reliability, but I'll let you know.

FANTASTIC! Give us MOAR!!!

No I wasn't kidding, I want 3g in airplane mode.

There is also a seldom reported bug that won't let me boot Froyo on my 3GS. Apple needs to give that some attention in 4.1.

Did you update or do a new install? Did you need the SDK to update to 4.1?

I'm curious about what's new as well. If it's mostly just bug fixes and changes to Game Center as somebody else reported why not call it 4.1 and not 4.0.1? I'd expect at least some noticeable changes to the OS or some new API's for developers if it's a point release.

New

I just installed iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 3G S and on first sight, the signal bars look larger and the signal drops significantly when the device is gripped tightly, much like the iPhone 4 issue. I have not found anymore features.

The point of airplane mode is to disable phone communications so it is safe to use the device on a plane (sans calling/3g data).

Edit: and no froyo for you. You're not worthy!

The signal bars are different. The smallest bar is twice, maybe 3 times as tall as it was.

This was mentioned in a recent press release, wasn't it?

Does that mean no 'signal fix' until 4.1 is officially released in (possibly) a few weeks time...?

I wish people would stop thinking that this signal meter change is a "fix" for the antenna issue. Apple never once related the two, but people have put two and two together and come up with five.

A software fix to change how the signal bars are displayed is not going to solve an issue that occurs when you physically touch part of the phone.

A lot of people are setting themselves up for massive disappointment, and setting this forum up for another month of bitching and moaning.

I don't know why but these new bars irritate me. Who cares how tall they are, exactly?

My 4 seems to be ok and in some cases picks up 3G much better than my 3GS did but Apple are annoying me with these petty fixes.

I like how you identify the death grip causing dropped signal as a "feature" LOL

You should have done the smart thing and waited a bit if you were expecting a completely bug free experience. It's the price you pay for being an early adopter. When they made such substantial changes to the hardware and OS there were bound to be issues.
