Two days ago my iSight stopped being recognized by my MacBook, so I reinstalled the bundled applications from the OS disc, this solved the problem.

HOWEVER, after running the update this morning, my iSight is not working with iChat AGAIN. I reinstalled the bundled applications from the OS disc and it didn't fix the problem for me. I am running it now and will report back on the findings.

Any one have advice for me on this? Is there another discussion string I should be looking at?

Thanks!

Zap the PRAM.

10.5.1 and Cisco VPN

Anyone else having trouble starting the Cisco VPN client after upgrading to 10.5.1? It isn't working for me, even after rebooting twice and changing my IP.

How do you get those shots of the computer to put on the forum?

To save screenshots to a file:
Command+Shift+3 - saves entire screen
Command+Shift+4 - gives you a selection cursor so you can grab any portion of the screen

To save to the clipboard, just add in the Option key to the above keystrokes. You can then paste into any program.

my question is, what programs do you guys use to get screenshots of single windows?

i'm a nooby :D

Command-Shift-4, then hit the Spacebar.

And I just noticed that the crosshair screenshot tool now gives you coordinates. That's cool.

Weird. This was a problem in all the betas for me on intels but never since GM on any. Have you tried a fresh install?

Yeah, I did an erase an install when I installed Leopard, and the weird part is that it was fine for a few days, and it happened about a day *after* I installed that keychain update... *sigh*

I was going to re-install, but it was about a day long process to reinstall all my software :( Maybe one of these days I'll get around to it, if the problem persists.

Update breaks Time Machine

Since installing Leopard last week, I have been successfully running Time Machine on a SR MBP to an external drive which is located on a G4 iMac, also running Leopard, on my local network. Immediately after applying today's update to the iMac, Time Machine on the MBP was no longer able to access its backup volume. After applying the update to the MBP, the condition persists.

So, is Time Machine backing up to remote shared drives still out? I've been enjoying playing with Time Machine just a little too much. :p

I used to be able to do this in Leopard before the update. This will no longer work, although local Time Machine on the same system (to a different volume same external drive) does work.

Can you give a synopsis of the issue?

Well, when I try using cmd-shift-3 or -4, it doesn't output the image file to my desktop as it should. This baffled me so I did a bit of research. Found in my console.app there was a nice long error message related to Screencap that mentions memory leaks. The funny thing is that I can still hear the "snap" sound when I hit the keystroke, it just doesn't give me any screenshots.

Is the drive still showing up in the Time Machine prefs? If not, make sure you can get to it in finder, than select it again in system prefs.

I think the people who are reporting "Snappyness" are reporting this because since the update forces you to re-boot ....this is the first time they have re-booted in a while.

Yeah, common sense doesn't come into it for other people!

Does it fix USB PCI card failure to wake from sleep. Huge annoyance for me and unacceptable that 10.5 was released with such an obvious problem.

I'll assume this is a Power Mac?

Aric,

I've got a 2.0 Core Duo MB, that is running Tiger, and I too had problems with iSight. I tried zapping the PRAM, SMC reset and several system restarts. So I then did an erase and install from the included discs, and after 10.4.6 was installed my iSight STILL wasn't showing up!! So I then installed the 10.4.10 Combo updater and after a couple of restarts BINGO iSight works! But today its not showing up again. All my troubles started when I went from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9. I'm downloading 10.4.11 right now and I'll see if its fixed.

Yes it does. Before applying the update to the MBP, I reset Time Machine to "None", then reacquired the remote volume with Finder after applying the update. It then dutifully shows up in Time Machine Preferences, but when I select it in Choose Backup Disk, it still shows that no backup volume has been selected. If I set Time Machine to the ON state after this, I get "Time Machine Error - no backup volume selected".

VPN causes kernel panics

I have the latest version of CiscoVPN and it causes kernal panics

I just uninstalled the vpn lol.

No problems here either, I'm using it through Shimo right now. Are you sure you're at version 4.9.01 (0080) of the Client?

Cisco VPN

I'm not having a problem but then again it worked for me on the beta build that supposedly had problems with it.

Your best bet is to reinstall the VPN software as that may address the problem since some changes were likely made to the networking code in this update.

Also check to see what version you are using and make sure that it is the most recent that you have access to. My version shows as 4.9.0.1 (0080) in the info window.

Good Luck

It's weird that these issues are so machine/user specific.

I know I had to trade in a Macbook with a bad screen for a new one, both with 10.5 preinstalled.... and both had different quirky behavior. The first one was blazing fast on the internet, while this one hangs on certain webpages until I hit refresh (and I can't figure out if it's a cookie/flash/connection thing or what?!), with the airport disconnects, ichat errors, etc. Two of the same model, with the same base software, behaving entirely different.

Really?? I always had that problem, I mean dimming the screen after restart no matter what I change in system preferences. Not only in 10.5 but 10.4 as well. And not only on one computer.
So maybe you think about something else???

I've also had this problem and I'm still running Tiger. It's annoying, sure, but not anything that drives me up the wall... maybe because I just don't restart much. Just go and check and then uncheck the setting and you'll be good as gold until your next restart.

Thank you for the suggestions. What does zapping the PRAM mean? Is there an easy way to explain how to do this? Also, I am operating of a MB that is a week old, with the new speed bump and on Leopard. Would your suggestion of the 10.4.11 combo update be applicable to my machine? If so, where do I find this update?

Thank you much,

-Aric

There should be an option to screen shot the active window only with out having to use a cross hair to select it.....sometimes it takes too long to select what you want to capture.

Keyboard issues on SR MBP

Does anyone know if the update fixes the intermitent keyboard shut downs on the MBP. Sometimes the keyboard will become unresponsive for a minute, the trackpad works fine, then the keyboard will turn back on. Is it fixed?

This is a different problem that's affecting me and many others. It's Leopard specific. I don't mean that my screen is simply dimming a little bit. The backlight is turning OFF completely, meaning I can still make out the windows but there is absolutely no light being emitted from the display. It usually happens after 3-5 minutes of no activity. I have my display set to never turn off while my MBP is plugged in, and I have the "Automatically adjust brightness" unchecked.

So the problem affecting Tiger users is not related to my particular problem.

Got it to work...

No problems here either, I'm using it through Shimo right now. Are you sure you're at version 4.9.01 (0080) of the Client?

The kernel extensions seemed to be "stuck", and reboots weren't helping... then I remembered this old trick and now I'm back in business:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/CiscoVPN.kext
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/CiscoVPN.kext
