anyone have any ideas as to when 10.5.1 might be available on disc at the store? i've been wanting to get leopard and just got the funds together.. was planning on going maybe sometime this weekend or early next week to buy it. i'm anxious to get it, but i think it'd be best to get 10.5.1 on disc at this stage.. may save a lot of installation hassle down the road ya know.

I was really hoping we'd see the return of Tiger Spotlight's "Show All" window. The smart folder version in Leopard doesn't cut it at all.

Based on what you said, I have a problem with why the behavior is different if the 39 MB update is applied vs. the 110 MB update.

Also, it makes no sense to compare to the original install disk for anything that was updated...the receipts for the updates should be checked -- not the originals from the DVD.

So it sure seems like either the files were not actually updated...or the receipts were not updated...or per your explanation, Apple is stupidly comparing against the DVD and not the receipts from the update.

In the end, however, the behavior from the 39 MB update and the 110 MB update should yield the same results. Somethings not right about that discrepancy.

The very fact that 'Repair Permissions' does not add new receipts to it's database is why you often see it called "useless" among other things, but that's just the way it works. There is supposedly a reason for this, but I don't pretend to know it. However it is NOT a bug, and everyone that applied the update should see the same "error". I know I did. ;)

I don't know about the 'discrepancy' but it's probably from reinstalling the update or some related confusion of permissions. But I swear, this is actually how it's meant to work. It's not a new complaint, and all that's different is Apple has changed what is and isn't shown in 'detailed' mode over the years.

Aric,

I've got a 2.0 Core Duo MB, that is running Tiger, and I too had problems with iSight. I tried zapping the PRAM, SMC reset and several system restarts. So I then did an erase and install from the included discs, and after 10.4.6 was installed my iSight STILL wasn't showing up!! So I then installed the 10.4.10 Combo updater and after a couple of restarts BINGO iSight works! But today its not showing up again. All my troubles started when I went from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9. I'm downloading 10.4.11 right now and I'll see if its fixed.

I tried zapping the PRAM and nothing happened. I have reinstalled the bundled OS software install discs, didn't get me back the video capability. After that I thought I would delete iChat from my applications and then reinstall it from the Leopard OS disc. When I did this and rebooted I can not find iChat 4.0 to reinstall. Anyone have advice to correct this stupid move of mine?

Thanks!

-Aric

After three attempted reboots, the desktop finally appeared. That was scary.

Anyone having problems with this update?

I just installed it on my PB G4 and upon the first restart after install it errored out to a black screen of death complaining of a kernel issue...

Now I am watching the little circle animation on the apple logo boot screen....

Was working fine before this update!! GRRRR.

Considering there will be 10.5.2..3..4.., no matter what version you get, you'll have to update. So I wouldn't wait just for updated media.

10.5.1 and Cisco VPN

Anyone else having trouble starting the Cisco VPN client after upgrading to 10.5.1? It isn't working for me, even after rebooting twice and changing my IP.

No problem here. (The new Cisco VPN client 4.9.01 that I got from the university to run with Leopard is still working just fine as I type this ....)

To save screenshots to a file:
Command+Shift+3 - saves entire screen
Command+Shift+4 - gives you a selection cursor so you can grab any portion of the screen

To save to the clipboard, just add in the Option key to the above keystrokes. You can then paste into any program.

Or if your really bad at remembering keyboard shortcuts open preview and select file>Grab.

I'm happy to see so many Apple releases.

I know there is still a lot of work left to be done, but Apple's track record has been pretty darned good with Panther and with Tiger.

In the meantime, that doesn't help much when you are dealing with some knarly problem.

"Keep hope alive"!

Old iMac G5 (August 2005): Airport disk's data corrupted/damaged

Hey guys, PAY ATTENTION, PLEASE.
I strongly recommend G5 users to download the full-110 MB 10.5.1 update.

When I started Leopard's update process to 10.5.1 using Software Update, it detected only the 39 MB-sized version.
All went on smoothly, except for a BIG and PAINFUL issue revealed after the update: I selected the Airport on the Finder's Shared Sidebar, then I double-clicked on the folder's icon that represents the hard drive connected to the Airport base via USB

Well..... it didn't show. The "segmented wheel" on the lower-right side of the Finder's window was spinning and spinning and spinning.
I decided to disconnect all the users from the disk connected to the Airport, then I rebooted the iMac and connected such disk on an iMac's USB port.
Disk Utility revealed a fatal corruption on the USB hard drive, nothing that could be corrected.
So I give Drive Genius a try: nothing at all, even REBUILDING the drive's structure.

REMEMBER: even if (see bold up here) I disconnected from the Airport disk using one of the most reliable ways (just because "eject" icon on Finder's window, the best way among the others, didn't work), all the drive's content was corrupted, unusable, impossible to open.

Then, when I decided to download the 110-sized update and installed it on the previous smaller one, everything FIXED. Now the external hard drive can be reached when connected to the Airport's USB port.

Please, check this out and tell me if anybody else has got the same results.

Thank you,

Luca.

Screen dim

This is a different problem that's affecting me and many others. It's Leopard specific. I don't mean that my screen is simply dimming a little bit. The backlight is turning OFF completely, meaning I can still make out the windows but there is absolutely no light being emitted from the display. It usually happens after 3-5 minutes of no activity. I have my display set to never turn off while my MBP is plugged in, and I have the "Automatically adjust brightness" unchecked.

So the problem affecting Tiger users is not related to my particular problem.

This one is leopard specific for me as well. I had no problems with my screen being dim before applying the update. I usually turn my iMac off at night so I have this as an almost daily problem.

This update has broke my parallels. I am so angry. First major Airport issues and now this crap. I even reinstalled parallels and it didn't help. It breaks the network connection.

[snip]

Sorry to hear that, I switched to VM Ware a while back and love it,
I've had several friends and family change to VM Ware also and they all like it much better. Education price is 39.00. give the 30 day trial a try, (backup your parallels disk drive somewhere then use VMWare's conversion util. on the original partition) Fusion doesn't need to install fake network adaptors to work either.

also fair enough and glad that it is working for you
my frustration and anger over leopard, and I'm a huge :apple: fan but also not blind,is that the severity of so many bugs that are in leopard are not ones that are hard to catch
this without a doubt means that :apple: knowingly released a very bug ridden OS without caring much about the repercussions.only sales mattered it looks like, which is true for most businesses except that there is usually a balance between sales and quality.with leopard :apple: seems to have forgotten the quality part and dropped the ball

like the graphics problems that plague most mac pros with x1900s,which is also what most mac using professionals use,the bug isnt hard to track down and notice. in our main office we have 6 mac pros with the radeon x1900s. 6/6 are affected. at home i have a mac pro with x1900 and macbook pro. my mac pro has the same problems. of my friends that have mac pros with the x1900,all i've talked to so far which is at least 10 have the bug showing constantly also.
the bugs with this configuration, again i think probably :apple:'s top selling pro config make the system unusable for almost anything.like i said there are thousands of similar screenshots on the net but just so you get an idea of what i mean look at
http://www.dganimation.com/CIMG3574.jpg
http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=89577&stc=1&d=1193810876

these little lines are shown all over the display, constantly with no way to fix it.the colors and shapes also appear covering up everything on screen under them continuously while using leopard. if it happened just once in a while or was not common and some oddity or rare bug that'd be one thing. But its not. if :apple: put leopard on a mac pro with the most popular graphics card they sell out of the 3 options they offer, they would have seen this bug.
which even fuels my frustration further because there is NO doubt that they saw this major bug and still went ahead and sold the OS at retail and up until right this moment they havent even officially said it exists.

and deleting thousands of posts on their discussion boards to try and silence the issue?? is that reallly a company that should be given all of your 101% trust? come on people wake up.Apple isnt perfect, far from it in fact. and with all of their recent problems it appears that as a whole the level of quality at :apple: is falling like a stone.
those of you that respond to those of us that 'dare' to speak against the almighty and say that we're just whining, you are the ones that are going to get screwed at some point if :apple: doesnt clean up their act.like i also said its nice that your install works perfectly, but don't deny that other huge issues dont exist.that is just flat out irresponsible and shows a bit of brainwashing from :apple: PR

Tribulation-

Thank you so much!! I've had a bad cold for the last 5 days and have been in a pretty bad mood because of it, but you just gave me a good 10 minutes worth of laughter! All the complaining that spews out of you really could not get any funnier. I don't think I've ever seen someone spew as much. I really enjoyed how you tied absolutely anything back to how you think "Leopard is a joke". Thanks a lot!

Back on topic, installed 10.5.1. Leopard's working great!!

P.S.- Tribulation, if you don't put a space after a period, it kinda defeats the purpose. Periods are meant to help distinguish sentences. Just FYI.

Just installed on my work machine (its a rather antiquated 1Ghz eMac). Doesnt seem to be anything major. All's running smoothly.

I'm rather enjoying using the eMac as a guinea pig before I finally install on my PB...

This update has broke my parallels. I am so angry. First major Airport issues and now this crap. I even reinstalled parallels and it didn't help. It breaks the network connection.

It works for me. Parallels build 5540 beta.

After the update my TimeMachine back up failed "disk read only".
Simple fix was to go to info and make permissions to everyone read and write.
Just a heads up if your first Time Machine backup after the update fails.
Otherwise everything seems snappier.:D

Graphics on my 2.0ghz Core Duo Macbook Pro now run extremely smooth again like Tiger. Since I updated to Leopard all the graphics stuff had been running sluggish. This update has fixed it.
Everything seems to run smoother now.
And the firewall is fixed :)

I clearly see an improvement on my Mini. Still a little bit sluggish sometimes but indeed a nice improvement. I would say it's now 85%-90% better...At that pace, it will be fixed with 10.5.2 :)

Fix chats from floating over everything else when you have iChat auto accept everything. This is ridiculous! They disappear when spaces is activated.

After three attempted reboots, the desktop finally appeared. That was scary.

yeah i have a powerbook G4 too and it's acting weird. it got stuck on the "writing package receipt", so i did a hard shutdown, and then wouldn't boot, and then i did a hard reset during booting, and now it is booting to the desktop, but now it's hung up on repairing permissions.

wait, it's doing something. it's saying certain files have been modified and will not be repaired. so i don't know what's going on.

admin lost

I did the update to 10.5.1 just now and discovered that I lost my admin rights. I tried to make changes in system preferences and when I clicked the lock and typed in my user name and password, I couldn't get in. I get:

"You must type an administrator's name and password to make changes to System Preferences."

I even tried booting to the disk and resetting the password, but it still doesn't work.

I'm worried that I have lost control of my computer in such a way that I can't get it back. I have no admin. privileges!

What has happened? Has anyone else had this happen?

Panicked,
Joe
