Apple Releases First Leopard Update (10.5.1)

I'm on vacation. Ain't no way in heck I'm going anywhere near an update that could theoretically trash my system. I may update iPhoto tough.

Safari seems to be a lot more responsive. It seems I am getting the pinwheel death a little more. Should not happen on 2.4GHZ 4 GIG MBP. Ugh.

insults removed.

If I went into a cake shop and paid $129 dollars for a cake and they told me i couldn't eat it I would not be too happy either. I am tragically not suprised to find that fanboys like you leap to the defence of the cake shop even though it has clearly screwed up. Some of the bugs in leopard should clearly have been found in testing, I wonder what their test plan looked like actually.......

i'd calm down if the $129 I wasted worked on my top of the line mac pro
and it doesnt.putting aside the asinine removal of dock hierarchal folders and simple options to reduce the ugly translucent menu bar,my system is still not usable.clean install and all
my x1900 high end graphics card puts lines all over the screen in leopard,if you think its just me and i'm blowing it out of proportion just look at apple discussions for samples. that and giant yellow and purple shapes that appear all over the screen at random.tiger never did this and hasnt done it since i went back so it is NOT a hardware issue.and no it is not fixed in 10.5.1,i just tried.
so a huge issue like this is just ignored and passed over by :apple: even though it is affecting thousands of mac pro high end customers majorily?! thats not what i'd call an update that should have been never needed

and back to the missing aka REMOVED 'enhanced' features in leopard like the stacks, menu bar, view options staying set and being stable, and a thousand other things ---- yes i am mad as hell at that. even the stacks feature that they demoed to the world in the public WWDC video showed them working MUCH differently.so much differently that it is another feature entirely. leopard is so half-as@ it isnt even funny so yes i have the right to be mad

I have the same machine as you and mine is working perfectly.

10.5.1 Failure

Hi,

I downloaded the 10.5.1 Update today in class over WiFi with no problems. However, when I went to restart, it failed to install the 10.5.1 patch and said that I need to contact the manufacturer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know of a solution? Or should I just wait and try to call AppleCare tomorrow?

Thanks for your help everyone ... Long live Apple!

I see...has anyone got problems with the tone when pressing volume up button not syncing together when u press it?

Yes I got this. Running Software update a second time fixed it (though I did end up downloading the update again).

Hmmmmm . . .

Yes I got this. Running Software update a second time fixed it (though I did end up downloading the update again).

I ran Software Update again. However, it didn't even attempt to download the update again, as I guess it had already done that the first time (and kept it in cache or something?). I clicked install anyway and came across the original problem again.

Someone said to run disk utility and repair the disk permissions, then to try it again. I have done, yet still come up with the same problem. This is the message that I get:

"The update "Mac OS X Update" can't be installed.

The installer could not validate the contents of the 'MacOSXUpd10.5.1Patch' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

. . . before waiting in a long line to talk to a Cust Serv. Rep., is it possible to clear out the already downloaded update and re-download it? Right now, when I go back into Software Update to redownload, it shows it as already downloaded and proceeds directly into the installation process. Can anyone help?

Thanks again!

Why on earth would repairing permissions fix this? It sounds like people just like to tell people to do it for no good reason. You might want to try deleting the update from /Library/Updates and have it redownload.

Thanks .. I will try that right now . . .

After the update i noticed an issue where it locked me out of most of my preferences, when i click the lock at the bottom left to unlock them it ask to enter admin name and password upon entering both it does not let me in and tells me the password and/or username are incorrect i know i didnt forget my password because i have it ask for password on startup and it accepts it and the username is entered exactly as i have it on the user preferences anyone have any idea what might be going on its very frustrating since its locking me from my networking and security settings

Thank you! Your tip was wonderful and it worked flawlessly! =)

wow... that was one amazingly impressive run-on sentence :)

Ugh... my Nokia 6500 Slide will no longer pair w/ my MBP via bluetooth...though not sure if it's related to the .1 update since it's the first time I've tried pairing my phone w/ my MBP since I first installed Leopard (the night it was released)..

All good here

I did an erase and install of leopard on my 17" iMac and CD MacMini - no problems at all. Both machines were noticeably faster - particularly in Safari. After installing 10.5.1, I haven't noticed any further increase in performance. As far as stability goes, I've not had a problem, so can't comment - certainly the Divx web player seems more reliable than before.

Heh heh... yeah but that's what Leopard was, wasn't it?

I've just installed it - preparing for reboot. No worries, I have everything backed up on my PC...

Hmm, so if you've never had a problem, how can your DivX web player seem more reliable?????

Just installed 10.5.1. Was wondering if anyone's experiencing the following problems:

1. Disk Permission Repair gets stuck at "less than 1 minute".

2. Software update gets stuck and won't finish checking.

3. Bluetooth mouse gets stuck (bluetooth icon still indicates the mouse is connected, but can't move the cursor. Had to switch the mouse off and on to reconnect).

I'm running an iMac G4 (old I know), just bearable with 10.5. Seriously considering downgrading back to 10.4....:(

I got exactly the same error messages.. Should I worry about this?

No. Don't worry about it.

I've figured out most of my stuff working with Leopard. Now, it's only the new Httpmail plug-in doesn't work with my Hotmail account (which I've had since 2001)... pretty annoying to check that email through Firefox, it doesn't work too well with Safari. ahh... Microsoft...

Well, httpmail launched a new version compatible with Leopard...apart from the fact that it has always frozen my Mail for a while when finding Hotmail messages on Tiger, it's ok...

Trash what? 10.5.1 worked perfectly.

Does your PowerBook's graphics card Support "Core Image"? Sorry if this has been touched upon earlier on. But if it doesn't, I think it explains the lack of transparency in the menu bar.

Also, in Time machine do you get a static background or the 'normal' effects?

Yes, the 12" Aluminum G4 PowerBook does support Core Image, according to the System Profiler.

However, apparently there's an unspoken distinction between "really supported" and only "somewhat supported".

Specifically, Apple claims that the GeForce FX 5200 GPU used in the 12" powerbook is missing support for a certain unspecified subset of OpenGL, which just so happens to coincide with the specific technique that Apple uses for menu bar translucency.

Personally, if it means a choice between having an opaque menu bar, or having a translucent menu bar that requires dedicated attention from the CPU every time the screen refreshes to work around the GPU's deficiencies, I'd choose the opaque menu bar.

What is Xcode? I have X11 installed, and I tried typing the text from that link in terminal and it doesn't work either.
Xcode is Apple's IDE (Integrated development environment) for writing, compiling and debugging new programs for Mac OS X. It is an optional component which is not installed by default, but it's included free with every copy of OS X, and can also be downloaded from Apple's website for free.

Check out the reply I got from Bickety regarding the same problem. It is post #376 in this same thread. It worked like a charm for me.

Good luck.
