I honestly don't know how useful these things are.

A lot of these things should be done for me (I mean it is a SMARTphone), with the help of Siri.

I'll play with it, but I doubt I'd make use of it.
I could be wrong, but wasn’t one of the core parts of this that if your phone detects you do certain things commonly enough it will offer it as a suggestion? If so, isn’t that exactly what you’re asking for?

I’m sooooo excited for iOS 12 releasing in September 17th!!!

I hear the speed performance is much better. Updates and improvements I’ve been watching are constructively positive. Second FaceID profile too.

If anyone wants to start seeing how all this works, apple bought the app called "workflow" which this seems to be based on. It's still in the app store and isn't as advanced but you can probably see how it might work and get a feel for it. Hopefully its a little easier on shortcuts. I've used workflow for a number of years.

Will this help with controlling colors for lifx scenes? Or actually work with nest? I know HomeKit doesn’t support nest or lifx scenes.

Useless to me, too busy to be programming this shortcuts. Make Siri smarter to do this for me.

Same lol I tried it but I just can’t be bothered and there is too much tapping and stuff involved plus I don’t even know what I want it to do. That’s why I want a voice ASSISTANT in the first place so I don’t have to think about anything and it just does it.

And then it suggests me to add a skill for the most useless random stuff. Basically any message I ever sent. What r the odds of sending the exact same message more than once? Zero

Hey folks, can you please help. All our family iOS devices are on beta train, mine is on dev build and my wife’s is on public build. What should I do to get off beta train? Do I delete the profile and wait until Monday? Or do I need to erase iPhones and iPads? I couldn’t find the answer on Apple website.

Delete profile, restart, and then backup the device in iTunes (don’t backup before you delete the profile, otherwise it will just be restored again from your backup.)

Then, erase and update/restore, and then restore your backup during setup.

Does the author of this article know for sure that the Nest app will support Shortcuts?

Since he used it as an example, I’m hoping he knows something that I don’t — namely that Nest does indeed plan to support Shortcuts.

I hope as much as you do, but Nest is hostile to HomeKit as it competes with Google's offering. Same with Ring (despite their promises).

If by chance there was an API to do so, I would expect an app update shutting it off to quickly come out.

Thanks for explaining! When I restore, will I restore to iOS 11 or 12 and, if latter, why is this step needed? And what do you mean update/restore? Update or restore? Restore to what?

Taking in consideration how far artificial intelligence is today, Siri should be doing this. What about quantum computers? IBM, Google, Microsoft are working on that. IBM gives free access to that system, Microsoft gives a free quantum simulator to anyone that wants to play with it. What about Apple? iOS 12 with shortcuts...
Once quantum computing is ubiquitous, your passwords will be useless, regardless the amount of characters/symbols you use.

Restore your phone using your backup that you make after deleting the profile.

Since you already have iOS 12 installed, you should wait until Monday when iOS 12 is publicly available to everybody, before you try to do the restore.

Hope this is kind of Mac OS Scripts, but smarter. I use a few scripts to make life easier and was hoping something similar would be available on iOS one day. An AI assistant is cool, but it can't read my mind. Like a real assistant, you show them first and then they know what you want.

Shortcuts sounds like an odd companion for Apple’s recreational iOS. On the Mac, productivity seekers and power users use Apple Script and Automator sparingly. I can’t imagine a significant number of phone users will conceive worthwhile scripts for their life routines. Hell, most people can’t or won’t program a thermostat. And a larger question awaits: even if you can program scripts for Life’s small routines—like ordering your morning Latte—why would you want to detach yourself from the simple activities and human interactions that punctuate your existence?

Ahead of next week's launch of iOS 12, watchOS 5, and tvOS 12, Apple has released an updated version of the Shortcuts app that will be available once iOS 12 is released.

The new Shortcuts beta is the golden master (GM) version of the app, which represents the final version of the app that will be provided to consumers.

According to Apple's release notes, the new Shortcuts update introduces new actions that were not available during the beta testing period, with "Limited actions available in beta" listed as a resolved issue.

Over the course of the iOS 12 beta testing period, access to the Shortcuts iOS app via Testflight has been limited to developers. Public beta testers and general consumers will be able to experience the Shortcuts app for the first time next week.

For those unfamiliar with Shortcuts, it's an iOS 12 Siri feature designed to let you create multi-step shortcuts using first and third-party apps that can be activated by Siri voice command.

So, for example, you can create a shortcut to do something like turn on the thermostat at home using the Nest app, text your roommate that you're on the way with Messages, and open up the Maps app with directions home all with a single "I'm going home" Siri command.

Shortcuts are deeply customizable, with third-party apps able to expose a series of quick actions to Siri that can be incorporated into your Shortcuts recipes. Apps are expected to begin releasing updates with Siri Shortcuts support and other iOS 12 features starting next week.

Apple will release iOS 12, watchOS 5, and tvOS 12 to the public on Monday, September 17. The software updates will likely be released at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Because its hopefully easy to make such a shortcut to have a little convenience. Would be nice to say "good morning Siri" and my lights turn on slowly, my coffee machine starts, Safari starts up and loads my two dozen websites I check every morning in separate tabs, a random iTunes playlist starts, Siri tells me what the weather and the traffic are like and reads me my dates for that day and checks my mail and messages.

Of course I can ask Siri for the weather first, then grab my phone and open Maps to see the traffic, then open another app to do something else and so on and so on, but hey why not save some time if I can?
[doublepost=1536972037][/doublepost]I don't have the beta so is there any way to find useful shortcuts from other people or websites? Can you export and import shortcuts?

Who knows, it might save you some time? Don't get all philosophical about it, either use it or don't.

Yeh, the last thing someone wants to do is question the potential sacrifices of technology before embracing it. It’s much easier to undo your choices after problems arise.
