Taking in consideration how far artificial intelligence is today, Siri should be doing this. What about quantum computers? IBM, Google, Microsoft are working on that. IBM gives free access to that system, Microsoft gives a free quantum simulator to anyone that wants to play with it. What about Apple? iOS 12 with shortcuts...

The challenge with quantum computing is the number of quantum bits become very unstable beyond a certain number.

I believe 1000 q bits will solve the issue of creating fertaliser, at the moment creating fertilisers is a very expensive activity.

Encryption cracking needs 250k plus q bits.

Current quantum computers only have 24 bits, maybe it’s slightly higher.

Quantum computing is more efficient for certain types of calculations but not all.

I think you’re caught up in the AI hype cycle. We’re still a while off before we get computers knowing what we want and then doing it for us.

What about donuts?! What about why we don’t use the metric system here in the US!

All of those have as much in common with each other as Siri and quantum computing do. Your comment is just nonsensical rambling.

Shortcuts might be a reason I would want to upgrade to iOS 12 from 10.

You should update anyway, and not just for the security fixes (e.g. in the browser, and with the USB port). Apple made a big deal at WWDC about how performance for older devices was a big focus of this release.

Personally, I can say that it's faster on my iPhone 6S.

To be fair, that's a very good question...

Sure you can make your own, but the key is developers can make ones you can add with a tap. This is exactly what Alexa’s “skills” are. Developers make a specific phrase that you can tell Alexa to have it do something. The difference is Apple is letting the user make the phrase.

I don't have the beta so is there any way to find useful shortcuts from other people or websites? Can you export and import shortcuts?
I don’t either but there is a community hub for Workflow (‘Gallery’) so fully expecting one for Siri Shortcuts.

this will be useful if I can share shortcuts w family
You can, very easily. Or publish them to the community. (At least in Workflow, so I expect Siri Shortcuts to be the same)

Apple is concentrating on AI and Augmented Reality, things that will run on quantum computers hopefully...

Useless to me, too busy to be programming this shortcuts. Make Siri smarter to do this for me.

It will.

A lot of these things should be done for me (I mean it is a SMARTphone), with the help of Siri.

That’s exactly what it’ll do.

A lot of people are missing the real news here: Shortcuts isn’t just an app, it’s a framework. Siri (the AI) will observe your iPhone use, including how you use your apps and will spot routines. It’ll then suggest shortcuts for you that it will build itself, asking you only to record a voice command to bring it up whenever you like.

The Shortcuts app itself is just the user facing UI that will allow you to build these manually. Most people will never touch the app but almost everyone will no doubt benefit from shortcuts that Siri will build for you.

So did TripIt (travel app)

To clarify for others... Shortcuts was distributed in beta via the Testflight Beta test app.

The shortcuts app will be in the app store next week.

Delete profile, restart, and then backup the device in iTunes (don’t backup before you delete the profile, otherwise it will just be restored again from your backup.)

Then, erase and update/restore, and then restore your backup during setup.
Just delete the profile and reboot your device. That’s all it takes.

Shortcuts sounds like an odd companion for Apple’s recreational iOS. On the Mac, productivity seekers and power users use Apple Script and Automator sparingly. I can’t imagine a significant number of phone users will conceive worthwhile scripts for their life routines. Hell, most people can’t or won’t program a thermostat. And a larger question awaits: even if you can program scripts for Life’s small routines—like ordering your morning Latte—why would you want to detach yourself from the simple activities and human interactions that punctuate your existence?

Good comment and to the point!

It will be fantastic to use swift as an interface language to command a quantum computer.

At this moment Siri is just a bot.

Let’s not forget about time travel!

Siri does that already but locally, if you want a conpany to spy your habit in exchange of few free software just change platform, it’s nice to have a choice, let’s keep it this way

Why I can’t see the shortcuts app on my iPhone running iOS 12 GM?
What rctneil wrote, plus the only means to get the GM version is the same as the betas - get a redeem code from those devs that were lucky enough to get an invitation through the Dev portal. I missed out on the invite and haven't bothered to bug anyone for a redemption code so I'll have to wait until opening day...

No it’s not. iOS’ AI and machine learning has been merged into the definition of Siri. It doesn’t just respond to preprogrammed questions and responses. It learns.

Besides, the whole point of this is that Siri will learn your routines and build Shortcuts for you. Don’t take my word for it, watch the WWDC keynote yourself or see it on your phone on Monday.

If this is anything like i think it will be, hopefully people will be able to publish their own shortcuts to a tab in the app. You know, for those of us who don’t want to build them from scratch.

Should help improve adoption of the feature, I would think.

I am not sure if workflow will remain a separate app or not.

The workflows will sync according to the release notes,” you have the Workflow app installed, your workflows will be migrated to shortcuts upon installing the Shortcuts beta.”
I don’t know if the Apple Watch incompatibilities will be addressed. I would assume they will be eventually.

I agree. I’m not knocking Shortcuts, but it’s hardly a killer feature. It’s nothing more than a voice-triggered macro. The user still has to set up the sequence of actions. Siri isn’t doing anything other than triggering the macro. We still can’t interact with apps using Siri.

I honestly don't know how useful these things are.

I'll play with it, but I doubt I'd make use of it.

Shortcuts is a feeble attempt at making Siri seem more competitive. It might be a nice feature, although I doubt I’ll use it personally. Macros have existed for decades. This is the same thing, repackaged. There’s nothing special going on here. You still have to do all the work by setting up the macros. You know things are slowing down in the inspiration department at Apple when voice-triggered macros is the big, new, exciting feature.

What I don’t understand is why they haven’t included this app with iOS 12, especially given it’s probably the best new feature and you can uninstall built-in apps now. Is it going to get really frequent updates or something? I just feel like a lot of people aren’t going to use it if it’s not installed by default. It’s one of the most useful features I’ve seen in years! This could make Siri much more useful and yet it’s tucked away in the App Store.

Like an assistant, I tell my preferences then she/he does it the way I prefer.

Why don’t do it with Siri?

Why would we have wait Siri read our mind and make the things we shall imagine she would do?

I suspect he was just trying to look smart and really had nothing of value to add.

Would I like Siri to be more open? Sure, but I value my privacy more. This app adds so much more than me being able to tell Siri to play the SiriusXM app or other base functions allowed with Alexa type AI. Assuming app developers open up to allow usage with Shortcuts, it has the potential to provide much deeper integration.

BTW, can someone tell me the size of the GM? Im curious to know if it's small enough to download over cellular connection while I'm at work. I for one have been excited for this to come out.

Yes. Items have a share button so.. Airdrop, email, etc.

questions.

Does this replace workflow?
Will my workflows sync over?
Will they fix Apple Watch incompatibilities with some work flows?[/QUOTE]

Yes, I expect Workflow will stop being updated (if it hasn't already).

Your workflows will sync over, first launch of Shortcuts had all my Workflows.
