I guess there may have been some tweaking of when the amp is actually active compared to earlier.
I just updated all of mine to 14.7, and it seems that when using the pair which is set as the default audio output for the AppleTV 4K (latest gen) the volume buttons no longer stay on all the time and will turn off when the TV is off. So perhaps the amp is properly being switched off in that scenario now? They still feel a tiny bit warm to the touch after being idle, but I'm not really sure if that's abnormal as I never checked that often before all these bricking reports.

Fingers crossed these won't be fried anyway, I would hate them to die as they're brilliant speakers, and the eARC feature with the latest AppleTV 4K is amazing.

Is the popping noise just the amps turning off? One of mine makes that noise a while after they’ve been idle.

Is it anything to be concerned about?

Apple today released a new 14.7 software update for the HomePod and the HomePod mini, which is designed to accompany the iOS 14.7 release that is now available on the iPhone.

HomePodandMini-feature-orange.jpg

According to Apple's release notes, today's update allows users to manage timers directly from the Home app on the iPhone and the iPad. Apple says the update also includes general performance and stability improvements.

There have been multiple complaints of sudden HomePod failures possibly due to overheating with the prior 14.6 update, but it is not clear if the 14.7 software fixes these issues.

‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌‌‌ software is installed automatically on the ‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌ unless the feature is disabled‌‌‌‌, but the ‌‌‌‌‌HomePod‌‌‌‌‌ can also be manually updated in the Home app by following the instructions in our ‌‌HomePod‌‌ update how to.

Anyone try to update 'damaged' Homepods yet? Results?

Out of interest, are you Southern Hemisphere?

Ive had a HomePod since launch, and always noticed it was slightly warm to the touch in the summer months.
Nope, East Coast, it's definitely warm here :)

the eARC feature with the latest AppleTV 4K is amazing.
Blackmondo: not being sarcastic but I have the new ATV and set up the eARC for my Samsung TV....works but whats so 'amazing' about it? Am I not aware of a feature / use that you have found? Thanks in advance for any reply.

Well maybe 'amazing' is too strong a word.

It's just great to be able to pipe any sound coming from the TV, including game consoles. It's pretty seamless, and the audio quality of HomePod stereo pairs is very good, better than a lot of sound bars. Admittedly if the HomePod allowed regular bluetooth you'd maybe get the same effect, but this at least opens it up to a similar experience.

I don't understand the whole Updating on the Homepod. I do it via the home app, but what exactly am I updating. It's a speaker. I don't think there is much use for security on a speaker. I do wish it could run multiple timers at once, even though I always just use the phone and watch. Other than sound, there really isn't much to the HomePod, is there? Also with the original being discontinued, It's a bummer I bought one in November. I like it, it has nice sound, but it was a slightly overrated product.

Let's see, it just got:
1) Dolby ATMOS support for AppleTV, first for video and then for music
2) eARC support so you can play all TV sound through it, including consoles
3) Better timer management
4) Won't die because of overheating
Upcoming:
1) Lossless audio support
2) Standalone Dolby ATMOS music support

all for a discontinued product.

That's quite an update for a discontinued product. I guess I stand corrected?

Mine started doing it 8 mins after music stopped. Then started doing it 3/4 times per hour regardless of not using it, iddle. I read it would only get worse, got money back as i live in a country with no homepod support and bought a new one in a “apple” country that sells it

Well I was planning on waiting. Decided I would let the mini in the kitchen update and test it out for a while before updating the other 5 homepods. Well it decided to update them all at the same time. I’ve noticed that the display on my OG homepods doesn’t stay lit up when I’m not using it like they were on 14.6.

If you want to update certain homepods only, you have to long press on that particular homepod from the home app and scroll down to software updates section and press update there

Yeah I’m not sure what happened as I usually do them one by one anyway.

It appears that 14.7 fixes the muffled dialogue issue in "home theater" speaker mode, as my HomePod OG dialogue now sounds crystal clear when watching shows and movies. Can anyone else confirm? The only downside is the HomePods seemed very hot after 2 hours of watching shows.
