I wonder if they are letting users view the ads "for free" or if the companies are getting charged for each click inside the gallery.

I really hope the companies budget isn't being spent that way, as it means even less iAd inventory for other applications.

For the companies it probably doesn't matter either way, although if it was free for them then it is better for them and might make them buy more ad inventory.

why does macrumors link to the appshopper description of the app instead of the actual apple link?

Seems like a useless middle step

The practice was started when straight itunes linking was awkward, as iTunes had to be installed, and people browsing from work would get dead-ended into an "Install iTunes please". It's perhaps less useful these days since Apple now does offer a web preview without itunes installed, so it may be just as easy to link using normal links again.

BTW it's free...

haha, april fools, you're paying for the access to the app store and we're still making money off of it!

apple you funny!

The Bigger Problem...

I knew there'd be a lot of "wuts" but this makes sense. If you don't like it, don't download it. I'm sure plenty of people will and it only adds value to their advertisers.

Honestly though, some of the ads are really well done. Maybe I just appreciate them more than some others being that I am kind of in the industry.

The bigger problem is that Apple rejected an app that served just this purpose (but was surely less pretty), as was already mentioned. This is a cool app, but they should be giving all of the money they earn from it to those that tried to submit this app long ago. I love Apple and have been converting slowly since my first iPod several years ago, but this is absolutely lame of them, even if it only effected a few people.

Whoever spends their time looking at adverts is a lost cause and has no life. Seriously I think this is the most ridiculous thing apple has come up with.

no no i think you will find buying an iPad 2 for over £600 and having to wait over a month for it to be delivered is top of the list!

Is Larry Page retarded? Seriously? Have you heard him speak? I think he is retarded!

Thanks for the passing insult however I think I was pretty clear that your use for it was one I hadn't considered and also a rare case that made this app actually useful. I apologize for recognizing your rare and interesting situation.

I think you're missing the source of the issue here. The problem you and vast majority of people commenting here have is that anything that doesn't apply to you or interest you is met with hatred and ridicule. Instead of apologizing for overlooking the one use you consider acceptable, apologize for looking down on everything you don't understand and accepting that most things in life have applicability to someone.

But hey, here's another example, from before your post:

haha this is as lame as a tv station bringing out a half hour of the most "unique" and "fascinating" ads, wow.

also, maybe if they were some good, funny ads it would be ok, but no. The ads shown in the pic are just "EAT MCRIB" and "MAYBELLINE"...

This person doesn't realize that iAds aren't just a banner, but can actually contain some pretty complex and varied app-like content. Maybe if they downloaded this they'd learn something.

As a showcase of ads it can't be bad can it? I bet it'll be useful to some out there and is good advertising for the iAd service.

This app isn't hurting anyone.

I Know This Will Never Fly...

...but how about confining ads to this app rather than on individual apps. This way it's a conscience decision on the user to go into the ads.

Just a thought. Now let me wear my rose-colored glasses.

My god, I knew people were self absorbed but not THIS self absorbed.

People, get over yourselves. Just because YOU don't see a need for something doesn't mean that anybody else that uses it is a moron.

What about the people in advertising? Should they be called a moron because they actually want to do research? What about people trying to learn HTML5 and looking for ideas? Are they morons because they are trying to improve their skills? How about the creative 17 year old that wants to win the first interactive Domino's superbowl commercial on an AppleTV in 2016 (using the AppleTV version if iAd's).

Sheesh... the world is going to a hell in a handbasket and each of you thinks you're the ones CARRYING the handbasket. Newsflash... you're not.

just when we thought they couldnt ever beat their Apple's biggest flop....this comes along.

nobody will download this.....surely:D

iAD's = NASCAR type advertising?

 Looks like the beginnings of NASCAR styled advertising that is blasted everywhere.

App Dev's and Apple should stick to the minimalist apple principles - clean interfaces, w/o out the commercial crapola.

Is it too late for April Fool's?

Edit - I kinda want a McRib now...

Loool

Even before I red the news item i had sended it to a friend...

They ******* canceld the mc rib in holland. Now I have to drive to germany every other week.. And ONLY for the mc rib... The rest is garbage, the mc rib is nice garbage.

You never go full retard though....but this is dam close.

Actually I like ads (good ads that is)

I typically buy paid apps, so I don't actually see too many iAds and was curious what ads are out there.
Although I am not in marketing, some of the best creative wit is applied to advertising and I enjoy experiencing a well executed ad. This is a great way for me to check out ad campaigns, even when the campaign has been retired (example, the McRib).

This looks like a great library of iAds that can stimulate the creative juices of folks who need to get their heads around this medium as an ad delivery platform. My limited experience with iAds, is that I only saw two ads (some sports related personal hygiene product and the Nissan Leaf). I never saw all these other Ad campaigns and thought the iAd system had no traction with companies.
With a library of Ads to review, a creative type can decide for themselves what Ad approaches get their attention and what don't work.

The iAd Gallery is a celebration of advertising, featuring iAd campaigns from some of the world's best brands and their advertising agencies. The iAd Gallery gives you easy access to a selection of the fun and informative ads that have run in some of your favorite apps. Use the Browse feature to discover ads you haven't seen, or to find those you want to see again. Even lets you tag your favorites to a Loved section that’s all your own.

This is possibly the dumbest thing Apple has ever done.

I can't WAIT to go browsing though this list of stupid banner ads! I wonder if I can collect them all???!!! I LOVE pop up windows in my browser and I've always wanted to be able to view them at anytime, without having to go to annoying websites just to get each one to load. Now I can have a crap ton of banner ads right at my fingertips!!! THANKS APPLE!!!

I hope they release a pro version of this app for the Mac OS!! Maybe they will incorporate a version inside the mail program that allows me to see ads for VIAGRA and STOCK OPPORTUNITIES IN AFRICA in cover flow!!!

If they had coupons with the ads that would be good. Otherwise, I'm not sure why I'd want to download this app. There isn't much interesting about little micro ad banners.

An app that brings all the things I hate together. Lovely. I know advertising is a necessary evil but an app that just displays ads? Biggest WTF of the year. I mean really, who the hell could this be marketed to? People that just enjoy looking at tiny, crappy advertisements? No one is that boring or unproductive.

Have any of you negative commenters ever owned an iPhone or even seen an iAd? If not, please reserve your comments.

These aren't just tiny micro banners/advertisements. Those are just the teaser into viewing the full screen iAd and actually, some of them are fairly creative in their implementation. Most are fairly interactive and none of the iAds take you out of the current App your using just to view it (like the old AdMob ads would do). There may be some that allow you to email a coupon to yourself, but I haven't come across any yet.

Long story short, if you don't like ads, don't download free apps that are ad supported or (here's a clever idea) DON'T CLICK ON THE AD. Otherwise, just keep your useless and/or 'clever' comments to yourselves unless you actually know what your talking about.
