Will definately be upgrading. Since getting a powerbook a couple of years ago, I've started a little part time business supplying dvd slideshows to wedding photographers for their clients.

So pluses here are :

1. New themes in iDVD.

2. Widescreen in iDVD - although does anyone know how iDVD will handle photos in widescreen? Will it do a 'smart' rendering of the image to lessen any distortion (not so good from a distrotion point of view), or will it rely on them being cropped to 16:9 in iPhoto (not so good from a 'possibility of chopping out important bits of the photos point of view). Either way, it'll be nice to have widescreen menus.

3. The themes in iMovie look pretty good - will be interesting to play around with them and see what they can add (in moderation) to photo slideshows - even if its just a fairly easy intro into the slideshow.

4. iWeb looks great - I've done plenty of web design with DW, but this looks like it would make it a cinch to put together some fairly nice sites, that would be ideal for offering Wedding Websites along with the DVDs - easily put up clips of or whole QT slideshows, or use the AJAX (?) slideshow feature right in the browser (hadn't heard of it before), along with maybe a few blog type entries provided by the bride and groom. Sure its all doable with other methods, but the quality against the time and effort required ratio looks very high.

To me, the iLife upgrade is the most exciting announcement. I use a 667 TiBook, so software makes the most difference for my wife and I. The photocasting looks really cool, and the animated themes for iMovie has my interest.

We will wait at least 6 months before purchasing a new Mac, the tibook was purchased Fall of 2002. It is not near as fast as new ones, but the sweet little baby still works great for our needs and is sooo much fun!!

LOVE OUR MAC!!! Way to go iLife '06

Not to threadjack, but one option might be to rent a Sony digital-8 camcorder with firewire. These cameras have the nice feature of converting analog 8mm tapes to digital on playback. You can capture the digital video via firewire straight into iMovie. I did this to convert some old analog 8mm tapes to digital several years ago and it cost me $20 or so to rent the camcorder for the day. Hopefully, the rental spots still have these cameras around! :)

back when we got the camera, my dad bought a box thing that would put the hi8 onto the computer (dazzle i think it was called). when i was originally trying this out i discovered that it was too old to even run on my PC (i think it was designed for ME, and not compatible with my mac). So is there anything like that still around?

I'm guessing it will handle them like iMovie handles stills in a widescreen project. Basically, tops and tails them (or bookends them) with black borders if the proportions aren't right... would seem like the most logical thing to do rather than miss off key bits of pictures?

Interesting, thanks, didn't realize it was an OS X thing. So where did you check to see if 10.4.4 supported it?

I was hoping they'd show which cameras were added in 10.4.4 in that link you mentioned, but as they don't, the only way I knew of checking was by trying myself. After upgrading to 10.4.4, I tried opening a DSC-R1 RAW file in Preview, tried importing in both Aperature and iPhoto... unfortunately no change since 10.4.3.. just won't open.

I guess there is a chance that iLife '06 could install the necessary files for new cameras into the OS. I plan to get my hands on iLife as soon as possible.. I'll definitely let you know if it happens to make a difference.

iPhoto exports a PDF file to the printing facility, iLife 05 send the pdf at 150 dpi whereas Aperture sends at 300 dpi. So the software makes a big difference becuase it is controlling the quality of the file sent to the printer.

while this is true, it's not too difficult to make iphoto 05 send the pdf at 300dpi. it just take one change to the plist file.

I remember someone posted a way around this here last year sometime. I can't remember now but there is a way to bump up iPhoto out put to 300dpi. Perhaps a search would bring it up.

RAW conversion is done through OS X (if Preview can't open it, no new iPhoto will be able to open it). I was hoping the 10.4.4 update would add the DSC-R1.. just checked... unfortunately it doesn't. I guess it's understandable as even Adobe only has the R1 working in it's beta RAW conversion software.

Looks like we'll have to wait for 10.4.5... probably to be released around the time the new MacBook's start shipping. (just a guess)

Preview can open NEF the nikon raw format I believe. But it won't open DNG or the raw from my camera (Panasonic).

iWork REALLY for .Mac only?

Does anyone know definitively if iWeb will only publish to .Mac?

From Apple's website:
"*iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended). The .Mac service is available to persons age 13 and older. Annual membership fee and Internet access required. Terms and conditions apply.

Note it reads "recommended" and not "required", which would imply that it is indeed possible to publish to servers other than .Mac. Publishing to .Mac only is the dealbreaker for me, if it's indeed the case, otherwise I'd pick up iLife '06 tomorrow.

RAW support

Where did you check for support? I am hoping for Fuji FinePix e550....

You can use iWeb pages for regular homepages too. There is just no ftp integrated in iWeb. You have to upload it manually.

The Dazzle (IIRC) was/is an analog capture device. It would take the analog out from the camcorder (or any other source) and digitize that signal on the fly. There are still plenty of analog capture boards out there that you can use. The Sony digital-8 cameras allow you to use the camcorder to do the digital conversion and you hook it up with firewire like any other digital camcorder.

how much is a photo book from iPhoto?

i had never heard of it before i watched the keynote.

It all depends on what size, # of pages, hardcover/softcover, etc...

iWeb is the clincher for me. If it wasn't for that, I would be on the fence whether or not to upgrade from iLife '05.

But since I just renewed my .Mac supscription back on Black Friday (it was on sale), I am all set to take advantage of the all that iLife '06-.Mac integration goodness.

The iPhoto updates and new iDVD themes are nice as well. iWeb is the clincher though!

The quality is excellent. I got a family photo album made for my mother for Christmas. Nice hard-cover, high quality professional printing. I was very happy with it.

lets just say a softcover with 10 pages, of 40 photos...

and if I ordered iLife later tonight, do you think I'd have it by Monday with standard shipping?

Mine was 30 pages, hard cover, and it was $50 with shipping and tax. It took about a week to get here.

I picked up iLife at lunch today from the Plano, Texas Apple store. The box is alot smaller, just about large (interms of width and height) enough for the dvd.

There's a whopping 2 page instruction manual on installing. As a bonus there's a trial edition of iWorks 06.

I just got done installing it and I'm beginning to play around with it. I'm most excited about the iMovie and Garageband features.
