ilife 06 up to date program

good news, it's only $9.95 this year ($19.95 last year)
bad news, it's only good for purchase from today on (Jan 10) - so if you bought a new mac in the past week or two, you have to spring for the full price to upgrade.http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate

QuickTime: Is the new Flash!

Apple's new iLife pages on apple.com are full of snazzy new Quicktime elements. So THAT's how they're taking on the new Adobe/Macromedia!

Now, as cool as the .mac update thing with iWeb is, I don't want to subscribe to .mac. Does anyone know if you can ftp using iWeb to other sites?

Geez!!!! Not even Digidesign which I consider to be an awful company when it comes to upgrades does that. They give about a three month grace period when new updates come up. Oh well, there goes my credit card between iLife and iWork OUCH!!!!!:D

is it worth the upgrade to '06 from '05?

first of all, it's hard to say until you've actually played with it in person - then you'll get a feel of how much faster iphoto is or how much you'll probably use it.

generally, I think it really depends on how you're going to use it or what you're going to use. for example, which applications did you use most in ilife05? what were your major complaints about them (ie, speed in iphoto, editing options, importing options). do you think iweb is something that you'll use?

for me, i generally used iphoto out of the ilife suite and what I really wanted were some of the features that they introduced in aperture (like being able to apply one photo adjustment to a bunch of photos or more flexible import options). i don't _think_ they've added those things in iphoto, but speed improvements are always nice.

personally, i'm on the fence. i started using lightroom beta by adobe and I really like it. it's got a lot of what I wanted apple to put into iphoto. but the ability to order cards and the improve quality photobooks are quite compelling (though i'd like to see some samples of the improved quality before I order) some of the time, I have the urge to buy it, and some of the time, I think I'll just wait awhile.

It depends, what did you use iLife '05 for? For me it is worth it because I use iPhoto extensively, and the improvements in '06 to that app are very appealing to me, as now I don't have to buy Aperture, which would have been overkill for me! ;) :)

Brushed metal look on its way out...

Following the trend started by iTunes 6...the new polished metal look seems to be here to stay. The iLife apps, at least from what I could tell in the screenshots, seem to have ditched their brushed metal appearance.

I use iPhoto the most (really iTunes most, but since it's free I won't count it), although not super often (organizing family photos). I could maybe see myself using iMovie, but my father has to get something to convert our Hi8 tapes onto the computer (and therefore don't use iDVD). Garageband I've never used but it'd be fun to experiment with my cello if I could pick up a decent cheap mic. iWeb would be cool if I made an informating thing for my family, but since I'm not a .mac subscriber, that probably wouldn't get much use.

So I guess I really don't need it, but I'm still thinking about it...

Not so sure about that. I think iWeb is basically a fancier Sandvox. I'm betting that it'll only work with its templates.

Good questions! A key factor in me deciding whether I upgrade to iLife 06. When somebody gets to play with iWeb, can they please feedback whether:
1) you can have a blank template / write html? (+can you set up your own basic templates?)
2) ftp is supported.
3) whether its any good!
Thanks!!

Not to threadjack, but one option might be to rent a Sony digital-8 camcorder with firewire. These cameras have the nice feature of converting analog 8mm tapes to digital on playback. You can capture the digital video via firewire straight into iMovie. I did this to convert some old analog 8mm tapes to digital several years ago and it cost me $20 or so to rent the camcorder for the day. Hopefully, the rental spots still have these cameras around! :)

Yeah, so snazzy that I can't get them to run in any of the four browsers I've tried, on either a Powerbook or a Dell desktop.

Edit: okay, now I can get them to work in Safari. But Firefox for peecee still crashes & burns.

Yeah, I heard that mentioned as well. Why would the software make a difference as to the quality of the book? Presumably they are printed in the same facillity somewhere, so why should it matter if one order comes from a copy of iLife 05 and one comes from iLife 06?

Any thoughts on this?

Brief iWeb Review

To answer some of my own questions and others about iWeb, here is one review:
http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/macworld/live-at-macworld-iweb-handson-147823.php
And one blog: http://tuaw.com/2006/01/10/using-iweb-to-post-to-servers-other-than-mac/
So although iWeb doesn't have FTP capability, with this: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/uploadtoftp.html, it all should be manageable enough.

I ordered mine earlier. I didn't even get to watch the keynote yet, but from what I've read about it, it's gonna be great. I love the new iTunes-like appearance and I can't wait to try iWeb! :)

I'd like to please ask people to take some time to contribute to the Guide pages on these new products.

[guide]MacBook Pro[/guide]
[guide]iWork '06[/guide]
[guide]iLife '06[/guide]
[guide]Intel iMac[/guide]

These pages are editable by anyone.

Works fine here. (FF1.5/XP Pro)

But I wish Apple whould have some kind of alternative version if you don't have QT installed/working.

Anyway;

Liked the Photocasting thing. Seems very cool. This could be great to share photos with family members who live far apart, especially if all got Macs.

Calendar creation in iPhoto looks cool too. Come to think of it, I don't actually have one for this year.... hmm..

Really, really, really don't like the continued intergration with .Mac, when you don't have option to use thirdparty servers.

After seeing the keynote, I am even more excited about iLife '06. It's got me so excited that I am actually gonna join .mac.

iPhoto looks amazing with the calenders, cards, new books, photocasting, full screen editing, etc. I don't use iDVD and iMovie that much right now, but the improvements to those look great, as well. The new version of GarageBand actually makes me want to try out podcasting!

Apple really has a winner on their hands with this!

Not to my knowledge. They implement certain features differently in some cases (i.e. iMovie is not just FCE, it has a different UI, etc.), but I believe all the core functionality is there in the Pro apps, and obviously much much more.

Ok, thanks....good, I have no reason to upgrade...:D

iPhoto exports a PDF file to the printing facility, iLife 05 send the pdf at 150 dpi whereas Aperture sends at 300 dpi. So the software makes a big difference becuase it is controlling the quality of the file sent to the printer.
