Okay Apple, now release an additional update to macOS 10.13.3 in order to fix this and the APFS bug as well. I'm afraid we'll have to wait until spring for all this fixes coming in macOS 10.13.4

EDIT: OMG They just released a complemental update for macOS 10.13.3! YAY!
Unfortunately, APFS bug is not solved in this update, only the character bug.
Unless you’re speaking of the promised compatibility with Fusion drives, I’m not sure what you mean by “the” APFS bug.

Edit: I scrolled down further and found the article I think you're referencing. Thankfully I only make HFS+ disk images :)

I timed it. Stuck at "preparing" for 12 minutes, then installing for another 13 minutes. I noticed it long time ago. Updates on iPhone take forever to install. What is the point of this hardware if it still takes forever to install a simple update.

10 Minutes is still too long for measly 40 MB. That does not compute in my head.

I think I just heard the sound of the world's tiniest violin playing. Half an hour isn't forever.

Just because it's ostensibly a "simple update" you have absolutely no idea what is going on under the hood. Maybe you have a ton of messages that need scanning and fixing. Maybe it takes time to protect your system in the event of a failed update. Maybe it's Charlie Chaplin's birthday. Who cares. 25 minutes of largely unattended install never killed anyone.

So tired of the constant flow of updates. Taking my chances and skipping this one. I have a hunch me or my friends won't be using the Indian keyboard anytime soon.
Should Apple contact you to see if an update release meets your time schedule first, or should they release updates when needed to the iOS community, and you update at your leisure, as it has always been?

Oh nooo free updates, what a disaster!!!!!! Apple is evil!!!!11111

Yeah...So much so... I have to install the Apple TV developer profile to prevent update ever send to my devices. I have more than 10 iOS devices in my household. Install them one by one constantly is pain in the neck.

What i have learned over the years is that new iOS update screws something up and slows down my devices. I will take my chances and not updating at all.

look I see a lot of comments about how bad it is that apple has to have lots of updates, the truth is Apple are not god they are still human like all of us and mistakes will always happen im proud that a company I love fix things with updates I would rather have loads of updates than once every year, no company is perfect and trust me apple has its problems and im the first to talk about them, but just be grateful apple fixes things even if it takes a while, rant over :)

But is it really free!?!. Say someone violated your house every night at 8pm, and left a big brown one on your floor. All free of charge of course. That’s pretty much comparable IMO.

Don’t get the trend people are having that updates are bad. Android and all other systems updates are dependent on whether you have the newest device to run it. I remember with one tablet we had we couldn’t even get an update as Verizon had signed to exclusively get the update for their devices. That doesn’t happen with Apple , and I would rather they fix as they go rather than go two to three years between real updates as they try to perfect it, which a perfect one have yet to see in any operating system.

There's a very good reason it takes so long.

iOS has a separate read-only partition for the operating system. In order to update, the OS needs to make a new copy of the operating system in a temporary location, then merge the downloaded update with this temporary copy. After this is done, the system will then verify the updated operating system to make sure it is free of corruption. This takes a while as it is a few GB worth of data that needs to be checksummed on a slow (relative to a desktop computer) mobile CPU.

When all this is complete, the update process will swap the now updated and verified OS partition into place as the new OS to boot (an atomic operation), and restart the device.

Basically, the cost of a botched update is a semi-bricked phone that requires a computer with iTunes to bring back to life. This is a really annoying situation for anyone it happens to, so the update process spends a lot of time verifying the new OS partition to make sure it has no problems.

Most people don't force updates anyway; they just get an update notification and tell it to update overnight, so they aren't inconvenienced at all. Us nerds who must update immediately have to wait, though!

No no, I agree with you, there are other things aside from this bug, I think optimization for the Fusion Drives and machanical hard drives is very important too. But I don't expect major changes until 10.14

iOS since iOS 7 has been filled with bugs and slow downs. I think people are getting use to this now. iOS use to be very stable and fast, but now iOS 11 struggles even with iPhone X.
The iOS 6 and earlier forums were filled with nothing but threads about how amazing and wonderful things are.

I love how every bug is now proof that Apple is letting QC slip and somehow this wouldn't have happened under Steve. These people don't remember when 10.3.0 was erasing people's external hard drives.
Come on, that's just the past and doesn't matter since it's all in the past.

Really. You sounds like typical Apple fans reaction. Where everything is fine with iOS side and it is ******** there in Android.

I only use Android phone and iPad as tablet use. I can tell you that, Android has been fine for years. I can’t say Android is perfect, especially with OS updates, but iOS is light year behind of Android in terms of usabilities. Android is stable enough for daily use right now, especially phones with Android 7 and 8.

iOS 11 has been ******** with my iPhone 6S and iPad Mini 2nd generation. Everything is delayed for couple of seconds and you see everything spring back to actions. Safari and app crashes happens more frequently on iPad than older iOS 10. My iPad Mini 4 runs better on iOS 9 than one with iOS 11.

What I can tell you is that, Android on cellphone is way batter than iOS. Android on tablet still sucks ball and iPad is still way ahead of any Android based tablet.

But stop these Android is ******** comment, you know nothing about Android.
Because Android’s problems are actually serious.

I know Android a lot better than most. I used only Android since the first Galaxy. It’s garbage. My Note 4 was on the same OS for nearly 3 years and had tons of features that simply didn’t work, particularly S Pen functionality.

It boot looped constantly app crashing was about a once an hour occurrence. I restored my Note twice, got new batteries, even a new device...just garbage. The earlier Androids were even worse. No support from Samsung. None.

I recently threw the Note in the trash.

iOS >>>>>>> Android

It isn’t close. iOS 11runs perfectly on my X. Maybe you need a battery swap or you have other issues. I have 3 6s devices in my family and they run great.

It's 40 MB. Can someone explain to me why does it take almost 30 minutes to install on iPhone X with all that fancy hardware?
Too much porn or slow internet? Mine installed on both my iPad and X in less than 5 minutes.

You had the Note 4 and that it is? LOL.... I am rocking Huawei Mate 10, P10, Xiaomi and all these phones in my signatures. None of them have any problems. My mate 10 runs perfectly fine without issue.

You know what is the last phone I toss to trush? It was iPhone 6. This phone is garbage at the best. Worst battery life, low amount RAM cause app refresh lot and iOS 11 just ruined the phone.

With regarding my iPhone 6S and SE. No thanks. I won't want spend 40 dollars for battery swap that I won't even touch. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S were just pure garbage phones riddled with battery problems, especially with iPhone 6. Pure garbage.

I played around my friends iPhone X. I found absolute nothing attractive and my Android phone can do so much more than iOS.

iOS 11 has serious issues, otherwise, Apple would take 11 update within 4 months. iOS 11 is pure garbage. My second generation iPad, Safari just crashes without any warning. Sometimes video will just stop playing leaving me black screen. On 9.7 inch iPad, animation is choppy at best.

Even after 11th iteration, Apple still cannot figure out good notification system. Even afte 11th iteration, you cannot download files directly to a folder you like. Even after 11th iteration, you still cannot run stuff on the background without getting killed by the system. List goes on and on.

On phone side, Android >>>>>>>>>>> iOS by long shot. On tablet side, iOS>>>>Windows>>> Android. I would touch any Android tablet and there is no attractive Android tablet. If there is, Android tablet app still suck and most of them just phone app made fit to large screen.

You can almost say that. I still have 2 first gen iPad mini. Compare iOS 7 with iOS 6 on these two devices, you notice that iOS 7 runs lot worse than iOS 6. I wouldn't mind swaps back to iOS on all my A5 devices (I have 2 iPad Mini and 2 iPod Touch). If anything, iOS stability went down hill after each update.

Sounds like user error and Android fanboism.

No matter what Android offers, it’s Useless bc it’s not stable enough. I had an S8 and a Note 7 (lol) too.

It downloads in 3-5 seconds then stays in preparing mode forever.
