I've figured out why Apple has just now offered a free month of iCloud storage o_O

It's because as soon as people enable Messages in iCloud, they will immediately start getting notifications that their iCould is full! If you have photos or videos sent via iMessages, your measly 5GB storage will be full stat.

Expect tens of millions of people to start complaining about this in 3...2...1...

Um, this is in addition to iCould backups, etc, etc.
Plenty of people have ********s of messages saved from ages ago...
An editor on the Verge wondered why Apple is suddenly offering the free month of storage. This release of 11.4 with iMessages on iCloud is why, hands down (IMO).

But for someone that does iCloud backup on multiple devices, wouldn't this SAVE space? My understanding is that Messages in iCloud (MiC) stores everything (text, pics, vids) in iCloud and syncs them to each device. So, let's say you have 2GB of local Message content on an iPhone and iPad. That's 4GB total of iCloud backup space. But with MiC wouldn't you be using only 2GB of iCloud space total?

messages in iCloud though has been tied to having two factor authentication enabled which is a total pain in the ass so no thanks. i'm not interested in having to enter a passcode every time i pick up my ipod touch or ipad mini at home every 10 minutes or whatever. this whole hyper security era is quite annoying.

That’s not how 2FA works.

It is requiring me to set a passcode. As long as it has a passcode it is required every time I unlock the device. I've been through this before. I don't use touch id to unlock.
That’s not 2FA...

Here is info on 2FA

If you’re talking about a passcode for the phone itself, use Touch ID or Face ID. Anything that supports 11.4 has either Touch ID or Face ID.

Not sure why you’re wouldn’t use Touch ID or a passcode to protect your phone.

My wife has an iPhone 7. Ever since she upgraded to 11.3.1 her mic stopped working to the point where the voice recorder button is greyed out in the native app. She cant make phone calls unless the phone is paired to a bluetooth mic.

I too have an iPhone 7. I'm still on 11.3 and dont dare to upgrade
Let her try update and let’s hope it will help. If not, don’t wait, bring it it the Apple Store. It could be hardware problem.

White iPhone 4: Announced by Steve Jobs on June 7, 2010 and released... on April 28, 2011.
MMS for iPhone, announced in March 2009, not available until October of 2009
Mac OS X Leopard, announced at WWDC2005, release target for late 2006, previewed at WWDC2006, announced for a spring 07 release. April 2007, apple announces it will be delayed until the fall. October 26, 2007 and its finally released. Delays are not new
If you compare a phone delay and major OS Release delay with just 2 tiny features in iOS, well...

Ok, so I updated and I was expecting some "Messages in the Cloud" screen to appear when I entered Messages, but nothing. I went into iCloud and in the "apps using iCloud" I turned Messages 'on'.

Is that it?

Ok then explain why it says 'requires 2 factor authentication' when I enable messages it under iCloud and then it immediately proceeds to require me to enter a passcode? I don't use touch id or passcodes to protect my iPod Touch or iPad Mini because they never leave my home and i really just don't care that much about security to use something that causes an inconvenience ever. I really don't get why anyone should care why I don't prefer to use these security features and moreover require their use to enable other features I might like to use.

Then explain why after telling me it requires 2FA upon enabling messages under iCloud it then proceeds to demand me to enter a passcode to activate?

Messages in Cloud and Airplay 2 are anything but tiny features, engineering-wise. Not defending Apple, but Messages is not "Hangouts", it's an end-to-end encrypted service, and Airplay is even worse. From the things I read (John Grubers "birdies"), they had serious technical problems with these things and it took quite a bit of effort to get them to work.

2FA actually made certain things easier for me, like setting up Keychain. You don't enter a passcode every time you pick up an iPod, in fact, since I set up 2fa and authenticated, I've seen the prompt only twice in a year, when I accessed my iCloud from a website. And even then, they are super easy to authenticate if you have more than one Apple device. I recommend you trying it out.

I did try it and it was a pain in the ass, passcodes that is. Apparently 2FA pre-requisite is use of a passcode contrary to what everyone in here wants to pretend. Consequently enabling the pre-requisite passcode then hassles you with it every time you unlock your device. The two are definitely associated.

The ****??? you use your Iphone without a passcode or touch ID?

What's it matter to you? I don't lock my car doors either, oh the horror!

Cloud messages will be a nice feature. It will also be a way to burn up iCloud storage; photo attachments hog up space awfully quickly. It’d be nice if there were a feature to one-click delete all message attachments. There isn’t on an iDevice, although I think here should be (much better than manually selecting all attachments in a message thread).

Not that Apple would mind a few more paid storage upgrades...

It demands a passcode once.

And you lose your phone or it breaks, then what? All those photos are gone.

I also like it because when I get a new iPhone, I always set up as new. I turn on iCloud photos, and all my photos are there. No need to set up from back up

I love seeing people who come into the one shop I work at “you can’t save my photos?, this is the only spot I had them!” And their photos are gone forever.

There’s little benefits in clean install. You loose your keychain, home screen layout, data from Health and other local apps...

Don’t use keychain, don’t care about local data of apps, Heath.. same too. My home screen is very simple to set up on a few seconds. I only have a total of 8 apps (including the 4 on the dock).

I like a clean install because I get rid of a lot of apps I don’t use, like a spring cleaning.

I zoomed in on your avatar to make sure you were indeed wearing a parachute. Phew! (Just kidding.)

You can do what you like of course. :)

it is.

apparently iapple decided not to make a splash screen on reboot/welcome asking if you'd like your message nimbus style or plain old local ... its the iadvantage

I updated my iPhone a couple of hours ago and turned on iCloud messages. I noticed that my iCloud storage now shows Messages taking up storage space. I just finished updating my iPad and turned on messages and noticed that the iCloud storage for messages just doubled in size, even though some older messages on my iPhone are not showing on my iPad. Will iCloud begin merging this data and eventually lower the amount of storage it is taking up or will it just keep expanding when I eventually add my Macs when 10.13.5 is released? If that's not the case, this seems really stupid as it will eat completely through my 5GB in no time.
