Apple Releases iOS 11.4 With Messages in iCloud and AirPlay 2

Don’t use keychain, don’t care about local data of apps, Heath.. same too. My home screen is very simple to set up on a few seconds. I only have a total of 8 apps (including the 4 on the dock).

I like a clean install because I get rid of a lot of apps I don’t use, like a spring cleaning.

Why just din go to Settings > General> Storage and delete not needed apps there?

I don’t mean iCloud keychain, I mean local Keychain and you do use it, it stores all Wi-Fi passwords. So you have to re-enter them again, not a good use of your time.

You can regret not keeping track on your Health datavin the future. Even simple things like step count can give you great insight. I track my steps, breathing sessions, sleep, heart rate, caffeine and water intake (Caffeine++).

Also it has my Medical ID card with my blood type and other info, this can help doctors to give you help faster.

I updated my iPhone a couple of hours ago and turned on iCloud messages. I noticed that my iCloud storage now shows Messages taking up storage space. I just finished updating my iPad and turned on messages and noticed that the iCloud storage for messages just doubled in size, even though some older messages on my iPhone are not showing on my iPad. Will iCloud begin merging this data and eventually lower the amount of storage it is taking up or will it just keep expanding when I eventually add my Macs when 10.13.5 is released? If that's not the case, this seems really stupid as it will eat completely through my 5GB in no time.

Precisely why I won’t use Messages, Photos or Music in the Cloud. Still flawed to this day.

why doesn't Timmy Cook give us 5Gb per purchased device ... google gives me 15Gb and i don't buy a damn thing from them!!

Please make sure you have a way to backup your Photos.

I just sync the photos to my iMac and I also use a regular iCloud backup and an iTunes backup.

I don’t trust those “Cloud Library” services from Apple yet.

Is I keep message turned off in settings. Does that mean they are still included in backups?? (Its off by default)

I hope that’s the case. Not everyone wants to use Messages in the Cloud.

Then you obviously did't read the notes that apple provided with the update or the article you are commenting on. The release notes specifically say: "Your conversations continue to be end-to-end encrypted"

Thanks for the snark. You are right. I didn’t see the mentioning of end to end encryption. Pretty much everything is end to end encrypted these days. And it doesn’t answer my question about how this will work now since the architecture was to encrypt per device which prevented Apple or anyone else from decrypting the message except for a man in the middle exploit.

But for someone that does iCloud backup on multiple devices, wouldn't this SAVE space? My understanding is that Messages in iCloud (MiC) stores everything (text, pics, vids) in iCloud and syncs them to each device. So, let's say you have 2GB of local Message content on an iPhone and iPad. That's 4GB total of iCloud backup space. But with MiC wouldn't you be using only 2GB of iCloud space total?

Try if for yourself.
I have been using betas all along, so it's no surprise to me.
But when I first installed betas with this feature, my phone(s) immediately went from a bit of space left on iCloud, to nag messages that it's FULL.

FYI from elsewhere in this very thread:

How do you know it's flawed when you don't use it?

Been using iCloud, Drive, Photo Library and all that fun stuff for about a year now. Never an issue and works beautifully. Keeps all my devices synced, everything stored in the cloud and a copy on my devices. Same with iMessage. It's a great system.

Some users have issues and some issues exist, as with anything. Not just Apple. So please don't **** on something you know nothing about and have not used. :)

Because!!!!! First one is iCloud Account settings and other

Because I have apps I do use once a blue moon and I don’t want them to go away. I also use 1Password so I just copy/paste my WiFi info and I’m in.

I do my medical ID, it takes a few seconds. Also, my meds change and this way I know I updated the info. If I restore from back up, I would probably never update it, and have the wrong meds on it. EDIT: (Just noticed medical is synced, so this is why I don’t remeber setting it up when I got my iPhone 7 and all is there, just shows I don’t need a back up).

I couldn’t care less about water, I have a 24 OZ bottle and I drink 4-5 of those a day, on a slow day.

As for steps and stuff, a 2 year reset when I get a new phone? Oh well.

Not sure what the big issue is, it works for me.

It’s still that way. Only end devices can decrypt. There were always computers and temporary storage devices between the sensing and receiving devices. The difference now is that one of those places keeps the messages longer than temporarily.

Again, not knowing what you're talking about. iCloud Messages was released today. He's referring to messages being in backups, PERIOD.

Yes, messages are included in backups through iTunes, you cannot turn that off. With your settings, they are NOT backed up to iCloud but will be in ANY backup you do through iTunes.

I have 50GB iCloud space, and pay little more then a $/month.
It’s more than affordable.
I have many complains about Apple these days. But pricing of iCloud storage is definitely not one of them

What an absolute joke regarding Airplay 2. After all this hype of being able to send Music to different speakers around the House (As we've been able to with iTunes on Mac & PC for ages), it now turns out that this only applies to certain speaker manufacturers & certain speakers. We have a Bunch of JBL's throughout our place that work great (With iTunes), but JBL isn't on the list so no Airplay 2. Cmon Apple - why can't you give that same access to the iPad, iPod Touch & iPhone that iTunes ALREADY does!

Lol, you are truly oblivious. Apple has it's faults but one thing it doesn't do, is mine your @ss for data and sell YOU as a product. Want more space? Spend $1 dollar, that's right - one WHOLE DOLLAR for 50 gigs of space. All the while, your privacy is your own.

There's nothing free in this world. Nothing.

Do you know this and is it documented or are you guessing? How does the new system handle the encryption from the sending device? Does it still use shared public keys for each recipient device? That doesn’t seem to me possible since you can add a new device and decrypt the messages. So it would seem to have some sort of common shared key.

"Free" denotes receiving something for nothing in return; Facebook is definitely NOT "free" in that sense...
It does for me! My info isn't worth squat to them. It all depends on how you have set up your info, your VPN, etc. All they really have is an email address and EVERYBODY has that. If you want to take it to that extent, then nothing on the internet is free.

Very interested to know the answer to this. I have the same conversation threads across iPhone, iPad and Mac all of which have different content (when thread started and some messages that didn't arrive on all devices) - what will happen when I sync - should I delete all threads from iPad and Mac so the 'master' threads from my phone are uploaded to iCloud?
This is what I am thinking about doing. I would be very surprised if you successfully merged threads together. Let me know how it goes.
