So hold on. I have DirecTV at home. I own an Apple TV and have Food Network and other apps installed to watch shows on my Apple TV. But if I use the TV App on my iPhone, Food Network comes up, I tap on a show, tap Play....shouldn't it play in the Apple TV app now...? I still need to download the Food Network app on my iPhone?

Yes. Apple TV Channels are for subscriptions through the Apple TV app. It's essentially a cord cutter app. If you no longer subscribe to TV through a cable provider, you can subscribe to individual channels from within the Apple TV app.

Makes no sense then. Back to my original question....what is the point of this new TV app if I still need to download the channel apps such as Food Network, Bravo, etc.? I thought we didn't need to do that and the content would play in Apple's TV app now.

The new app will offer a unified design across multiple sources (tvOS, iOS, Samsung, LG, Sony, Roku, FireTV, etc.).

The new app offers Apple Channels, which can be subscribed to through the new version of the app, and can be played directly through the new TV app without the need for a secondary app. Roku and Amazon offers this as well.

Releasing Apple TV plus and Apple news Plus is a good way to build up a subscriber base before the App Store monopoly on iOS comes to an end (forcing Apple to compete with similar apps at the same price point without the Apple 30% cut).
You're talking about a non-secure apps store with apps that Apple can't check for security? Come on... Who wants that? I don't!
Only the opponents and envious ones of Apple's success need such a thing.

Ooooh, gotcha. Thanks!

I can honestly say I hate the TV app’s change to wide rectangle icons for movies. What exactly was wrong with using movie posters? I would be a lot less annoyed with half the images weren’t being pulled in for the wrong version of the films (using the same images for both standard and extended releases, etc.). Then half the time you can’t even read the tiny text they’re using on the images.

Not having the letter scrubber on the right side is also making it a pain to go through a large library.

I'm not a fan either. They have improved some of the artwork since the first beta though, I'm happy to say it has improved, though like you said, the standard/extended releases are crappy, some artwork has Deadpool stuck on it, and some titles use Spanish language artwork, etc.

The new design of your personal library looks cheap!

I was wondering why a few of my movies had Spanish titles in these new posters...Glad I'm not the only one.

After updating, I'm having issues with shared calendar events showing up. Most of them are missing on the iPhone, but they all show up on the iCloud webpage. Hard reboot, cycling the calendars, and soft reboot haven't fixed...

Anyone else? Or solutions?

The update "addresses an issue" that could cause calls using Wi-Fi calling to drop. Note that Apple doesn't say it "fixes an issue" -- language used for other bug fixes. I assume that it doesn't completely fix this bug, which I've experienced.
More detail please. Otherwise nobody is interested in your message.

Does this mean Samsung smart TVs will be getting an update pretty soon to?

Why do we still need full OS updates for standalone stock app updates? Wasn't that the whole point of adding all the stock apps to the app store (other than being able to delete them)? Doesn't seem very logical to me.

Who the **** needs AppleTV? What about bug fixes and stability improvement? Jesus!

The latest iOS is widely heralded as the most stable, bug free iOS ever, so they've already taken care of that as Craig F., told us was their plan. Kudos to him and his team. Meanwhile, tens of millions of people are anxiously awaiting even more improvements to Apple TV which works extremely well and is getting better all the time.

So... they updated 1 app? I've always been confused as to why they can't just update their own apps through the App Store. Why does it need to be a completely new .os version?

Weren’t some places saying that Channels would be a flat $9.99 a month each? I guess that didn’t pan out. I’m seeing the standard prices, which are different for each service.

Apple never said they would be standardized as that is up to the different channels and there's no way they would all be able to agree on a price, and that may even be illegal price fixing. You're likely referring to speculation that Apple would charge $9.99 for each of its new services.

iTunes is now seeing the update, but my phone just finished downloading it. Installing right now.

With my iPad connected hitting the 'check for updates' button started bringing up a 'contacting server' message for less than the blink of an eye. Finally it came up with the new update message. It eventually showed 12.3 for the SE too. That was close! :) I'm staying on High Sierra on this [mainly used] MacBook, so won't have to redo iTunes itself today. Not today.

Aside from "bug fixes" and the like, it also includes updates to the Wallet app, etc. It's just that the TV app was a major redesign... some for the good, some for the bad.
