I do seem to strongly recall they were different last year. Of course iOS 16 was very buggy for months after release and essentially its entire lifetime if you count the abomination that was autocorrect.
You'll find this chart handy. Both iOS 16 and 17 had just one RC. Need to do a bit of datamining to verify the builds were the same. This time same build against RC 17 and public 17.

Wish they would improve autocorrect on pre-iOS 17 iPhones and iPads! There must be millions of them out there and in use.

Our 2016 iPhone SEs and iPad Air 2s could really use major improvement in this area. Typing is a real nuisance.

A decent overhaul wouldn't require a “language machine learning model” or whatever Apple is calling it. A user editable dictionary; better rules; and eliminating the mishandling of apostrophes and stray commas inside words would solve most of our problems.

Or, simply deploying an on-the-fly decent spell checker — e.g., Microsoft Word's — would quickly catch and fix the typical errors that arise for us when typing on the onscreen, flat, small size, no-travel keyboard.

It would be a wonderful giveback to long-time veteran Apple users.

So the contact card seems nice until you realize that your work and home phones that are always stacked in your pocket will continually try to share contact cards. This is a silly bug that I hope gets quickly fixed.

Updates went smoothly (they come out at around 1 am in my area). Woke up earlier than usual, updated my iPhone, iPad Pro and both Apple TVs while washing up, then updated my watch and had some time to play with them before leaving for work.

I like it when a plan comes together.

Apple today released iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, the latest operating system updates that are designed for the iPhone and iPad. As with all of Apple's software updates, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are available for free. iOS 17 is compatible with the iPhone XR/iPhone XS and later, while iPadOS 17 runs on the iPad mini 5 and later, the iPad 6 and later, iPad Air 3 and later, the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro and later, all 11-inch iPad Pro models, and the 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

Apple's updated software, which is build 21A329, can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update. It can take a few minutes for the updates to propagate to all users due to high demand.

While you download iOS 17, make sure to check out our dedicated iOS 17 roundup for a full rundown of all of the features in the update. We've highlighted a few of the most notable additions below, but this is a huge update with hundreds of changes.

iOS 17 expands on last year's Lock Screen updates with the addition of interactive widgets and StandBy, a new feature that turns the iPhone into a mini home hub when it is charging. You can now see voicemail transcriptions in real time, and leave video messages in FaceTime. FaceTime also now works on the Apple TV with tvOS 17.

With NameDrop, exchanging contacts is as simple as touching two phones together, and Messages has been overhauled with new safety features and updates to the way that stickers work. Autocorrect is better than ever, Spotlight search has been improved, private browsing in Safari is more secure with Face ID lock, and there's now a mood tracking feature in the Health app.

Passwords can be shared in iCloud Keychain and AirTags can be shared among family members too, plus there are new features for the AirPods Pro. Apple has also added updates to Siri, Mail, Reminders, Notes, Home, and more. Full release notes for the update are below.iOS 17 brings big updates to Phone, Messages, and FaceTime that give you new ways to express yourself as you communicate. StandBy delivers a new full-screen experience with glanceable information designed to view from a distance when you turn iPhone on its side while charging. AirDrop makes it easier to share and connect with those around you and adds NameDrop for contact sharing. Enhancements to the keyboard make entering text faster and easier than ever before. iOS 17 also includes updates to Widgets, Safari, Music, AirPlay, and more.

- Messages app crashes/closes after tapping/opening it,
- some apps and folders do not appear on the Home Screen (there is a void where they used to be. Yet, they're clickable), and
- had 10 free GBs on latest iOS 16 (16.6 I believe it was?). Now, I am getting the dreaded storage is almost full notification (iOS 17 is taking up 11 GBs, and System Data is taking up 12 GBs)

restarted the phone numerous times but to no avail

ProMotion is janked up on iPad Pro 10.5”. Restart temporarily fixes it, then it gets jerky again.

Stand by shows a "CUP" in the clock. Come on Apple, what's that supposed to mean. Well obviously Cupertino, but why not PDT or let me set to something meaningful to me.

I’ve just got it and comepletly agree. I‘m staring at it feeling like nothing has changed. I was thinking id have something to play with.

same for iPad os
Add the health app to your iPad. That will give you some excitement as it syncs your health data.

I just want to know what irrevocable changes iOS 17 will make to iCloud that will cause two Mac running Monterey start to whine afterwards. There's nothing in iOS 17 that I care about, so until the phone gets excessively in my face about updating to it, I won't bother. But after that...

Edit... I don't care about iCloud either, I just don't want to have various machines whining about incompatibilities like happened last time.

I do not like the placement of the control buttons on the phone call screen. The bottom row, especially the red, hang up button, is way too close to the bottom of the screen. If you’re trying to swipe up out of that screen to get somewhere else on the phone, there is a great potential of tapping the hang up button accidentally. I’ve already done it once. I’m not sure why they can’t place it a little bit higher on the screen.

No bugginess yet. Still think this is indexing..and I'm also sure we'll get a 17.0.1 in a few days.

I have plenty of storage, but still... I had 51GB used of 256GB before the update...now it's just under 65GB used after the ios17 install. 😬

I've been enjoying the updates. I look forward to getting the fullness of it when I get the 15 Pro Max later this week. Unfortunately I have the 14 Plus right now and I can't get standby to work. What do I do there?

700 gb of 1 tb available. Close to what I had before as I recall
I deleted Instagram which was sucking up over 8GB of space, no idea where that came from...reinstalling it brought it back down under 400mb.

Cleared all cache, cookies from SAfari. Over 1GB down to 231mb.

Did a new backup on my older iMac which always bring the used storage back down...even if it might be temporary.

Now back to 53GB of 256GB storage used, that's better at least.

So I am checking my storage to see how it looks after the update and I have a category called Synced Content. I have no idea what it is but it is taking up 66.24 GB of data. When I tap on it all it says is synced Contant, Apple, Inc. and the size. Underneath that it says media content synchronized from your computer. But it also shows music that I have on my phone, which is synced from my computer and photos, a lot of which are synced from my computer. So is this category duplicative of the con tent it’s already there or is it being counted as a separate category? Because it is taking up a lot of storage.

Does anybody know what the heck this is and how I can get rid of it?

For the first time since I've owned an iPhone (more than 10 years), I'm not updating on day one. This is the least exciting major iOS release ever for me. The only thing I really need is offline maps, and I won't need this until I travel at Christmastime - by which time I'll probably be able to go straight to iOS 17.2. Air Tag sharing is mildly interesting.

Same for the Watch - I see no compelling reason to update yet. The weather forecast will look better, but still be wrong...

Not complaining. This is now mature software on mature hardware. The next big innovation is a few years away, and probably something to do with foldable screens and ProVision...
