i thought jailbreaking was legal and your right to do so..... why then does apple keep issuing patches to break the jailbreakers....?

People you don't know and who don't like you can use this to jailbreak your phone to make it do bad stuff like dial 1-900 numbers all day or send out lots of child porn to all your friends.

A little side note, Jailbreak voids ANY of your warranties.

True, I jailbroke my iPhone, then my car broke down. Because I had jailbroken my phone, the dealership did not need to fix my car. My insurance company was also not required to replace my roof after the big hail storm.

Every phone can be restored to factory conditions. There is nothing that can be done with a jailbreak that can mess up a phone to require a replacement. Stop spreading propaganda.

The point is, people with a JB phone will have more problems, bringing their phone in more often costing Apple more money. Apple would prefer not to be required to do a factory reset to your iPhone.

it still voids your warranty... thats not propaganda... read the User Agreement LOL

I didn't say it didn't. It voids the warranty if you're stupid enough to walk into an apple store with a jailbroken phone and show it to them. If it's restored, they have no way to know.

yep this is only good news,

don't get me wrong I have absolutely nothing at all against jailbreaking using your computer because you actually have to do physically do it yourself

I only have issue with the 'remote' jailbreak because of the very real potential of abuse and misuse.

same here... i used to jailbreak but i got tired of always restoring just to get more than 3 hours of battery out of my Iphone 4...this is good that apple plugged this security hole.

Why oh why is CDMA iPhone still being kept to iOS 4.2 series?
Because the bulk of the iOS development focus is on iOS 5. My guess is that the effort needed to bring Verizon iOS 4.2 to 4.3 would delay the release of iOS 5 by an additional 4-6 months.

It's highly likely that unifying the two code branches caused the normal summer release of iOS to slip by a couple of months.

When development commenced in earnest with the CDMA iPhone, the engineers needed to fork code from a stable branch, iOS 4.2 to bring the new device to market in a timely fashion. Meanwhile, development proceeded in iOS 4.3, but without any of the CDMA code.

Damn... I plugged my ipad in and saw there was an update right away. Hoped it was something cool, but noooooo...

If only Apple had not allowed their malicious iOS 4.2 download to infect my iPhone 3G, I might not have switched to Android.

This is to fix a PDF vulnerability. Vulnerability that would allow someone to take over your iPhone.

I find it a bit amusing that a patch was released on Cydia alongside the jailbreakme.com JB, and it took Apple this long to create their own patch.

Because Apple does and needs to do more stringent testing with their devices. Who knows how much or how little testing the developer of the Cydia patch did? Maybe they broke some rarely used functionality of PDF viewing in the process.

I've jailbroken every device I've had (every iPhone since day 1) and I know the risks, as do most other jailbreakers. If something is REALLY wrong with my phone (like my home button currently seems to be), I will restore, sync my stuff (to not be suspicious) and bring it in to be replaced. If it has anything to do with my jailbreak, then it won't be broken after I restore and Apple won't be replacing anything. If it is related to the jailbreak, well then it's my bad for jailbreaking. Again, most JB users know the risks.

The only time I've ever had issues with my phone, BTW, is when trying the ACTUAL jailbreak itself. After the fact, nothing I've ever done has caused problems.

They aren't. They're preventing other people from breaking into your phone and installing malware and rootkits that could prevent you from jailbreaking your own phone.

It is legal; it is not a "right."

Apple can certainly make it as difficult as they want for you to jailbreak your iOS device. All the DMCA exemption means is that if you do figure out how to do it, Apple can't sue you (nor can you be charged with a crime).

It isn't propaganda. Not everyone is a geek like us. Someone could have jail-broken their phone because their geek friend told them to, and it could have buggy software in it that could appear to be a hardware issue or simply cause their apps to crash. The novice user isn't going to go to the forums for an answer and then restore their phone. No, they're going to take their broken phone to the Apple store and demand it be replaced. Even if Apple refuses to replace it, they'll have an unhappy iPhone owner, and they'll have had to pay their employee for the time to deal with that unhappy customer.

Does anyone know if this update will FINALLY allow VZW iphone users the ability to try the itunes cloud services that have only been available to att iphones? --- Oh wait. 4.2.9 Never mind. LAME BOAT

There is no additional functionality in these software releases. They just fix some security problems.

Verizon Wireless iPhone users have to wait for iOS 5 for new features.

Do they? You would think that with such stringent testing, Apple would have discovered this PDF vulnerability prior to Comex......

I still find it amusing.
