I noticed that when I cut off Facebook's notifications, my battery draw was WAY nicer. It seems as if that particular app's notification function tries to push constantly to catch EVERY.SINGLE.THING people post. It didn't really align with the notifications that i turned off on the actual Facebook site.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try turning it off then. But I still am convinced that the 3G always on is my biggest problem...

Try going to Settings>Location Services>System Services (at the very bottom)>Status Bar Icon. If that is ON, then the location services icon will be omnipresent, since the Setting Time Zone option always tracks your location (I find that a little creepy, so I have it off anyway).

For me it's definitely not omnipresent. It will sometimes come on for hours, but then it goes away and may not come back for days.

Either way, does not change my battery life whether it's turned on or off.

It sure is 'OTA', but only by means of WiFi. ;)
My AT&T 3G connection is [D/U] 4.64Mbps/1.16Mbps yet Apple deems only WiFi worthy. Full bars, too.

I never had any problems in the first place. No noticable changes with my Verizon, 32GB battery ,white 4S, still goes 3-4 days easy without charging and moderate data use. I'm always on wifi no matter where im at home or work though. I usually kill apps that use location services and have display brightness set at about a quarter of the max. No complaints here. (IOWA)

Thanks for the help.. but it still isn't' working. Oh man this is painful now.... never realized how important it was!

Ok, so now this is getting annoying bad. Messaging works, but the caller ID that shows up doesn't display the name... however messaging works fine. But if I change the contact phone number to have a 1 in the front (like 1-978-***-****) then messaging doesn't display the contact name! WTF. No one else is having this problem? Like I said it was all fine with 5.0!

While I have't been able to do a full day battery test, I can still say that after the update the battery on my 64GB 4S went from 42% to 27% in under an hour with minimal use. But again... a full fair test would be to see how it performs though a full day from 100% charge.
If your battery is dropping that fast you got other issues. Best to take in to apple.

Regarding the reason for Apple forcing WiFI updates, I would guess that the carriers are scared of what would happen if they push out a sizeable OTA update over 3G to all iPhones (there are a LOT of em!) at once (read: The network might choke in high traffic areas).

Pure speculation on my part, but it´s the reason that makes the most sense.

Downloading now!

Can't wait to compare my 4S battery charts from 5.0.0 to 5.0.1 over roughly the same time frame.

Hi

anyone here who used beta 2 been able to upgrade to stable? mine says no updates available, my other half who is not on the beta was able to update just fine.

I haven't touched my iPhone 4S since I updated it at 6:30pm. Normally it would have reduced by at least 2%-4% just sitting there untouched.

Just now it dropped to 99% with 7 min usage 4hr 26 min standby. So standby at least has improved for me.

totally agree

Battery doesn't seem to be worse, almost running 3 hours since disconnecting from the charging dock and battery just went down to 99% after medium use. Then again, my 4S ran about 3 hours on 1% battery with medium use. Guess you need to calibrate those batteries once in a while. But people have a hard time waiting for the battery to be depleted, then wait a couple of hours, then fully charge it again. You could miss an urgent text message! :p

Yes!!!! I am having the exact same issue. WTF!?!?!?!

I loved downloading the update OTA. It was so quick and painless. I think it only took me like 5 minutes at the most to download AND Install. Much better than the 30 minutes it takes to download through iTunes with a 700-800 mb file

After updating and charging to 100% I left the phone untouched for an hour and now am at 92%
One hour later with minimal use (Two five minute calls, a text, and a check on my smurf village :D) I am down to 82% :(

I calibrated my battery twice in two weeks and its still utter cr@p

So I am trying to update it through my Verizon 4s, and it tells me that it is unable to check for updates. I am connected through wifi at home. When I try to do the itunes update, it says that the connection times out. Can anyone help me? I've turned my phone on and off, and reset my internet connection and it still will not work.

This S*xxx

My phone was perfect, 3g speed was awsome. Now that I updated to 5.0.1, My speed test for download is 0.04 mbps. Before, from exact same spot, it was almost 3mbps. WTF Apple. Really pissed now. Thinking about just getting my money back and using my trusty 3gs. At least I could jailbreak the bloody thing, it was more reliable even with some of the jail break quirks. Oh and now my battery is draining like a sink hole. It was just fine before the update

UPDATE!! So, right after I left work, I tested the 3g speeds on the way home. They were normal and good speed. BTW the phone was getting hot while trying to negotiate on 3g at my work. Could have been a busy or bad cell site, though I usually get about 3mbps from work. However, it still seemed that the battery was draining faster than before. Fortunately I was able to restore it back to 5.0. Apparently, Apple has not stopped signing 5.0, so if you want to revert, better do it quick, no telling how long you'll be able to do it. You'll need to find a restore IPSW on the net if you don't have one in iTunes already.

Did you perhaps switch from AT&T to Verizon? I had this problem until I programmed my phone for Verizon by dialing *228 and following the prompts. There's a thread about this issue on Apple's support forums...
