Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1 to Address Battery Life Issues [Updated]

So far my battery life appears about the same, but I didn't really have any complaints to begin with. Maybe we can try to figure things out:

  • Did you turn the phone off and on again?
  • Did you update OTA or through iTunes?
  • Did you have a battery issue before?
  • Is it better, worse, or the same?

iTunes update for me.

Who really cares. The first time you connect, it will ask you to upgrade.

I really care, otherwise I wouldn't have asked.

.. or is it just because there are people who still haven't received their iPhone 4s yet, who would like to jailbreak, but have lost their opportunity to for the moment because of a new release.

But I digress, we must connect and say no to the upgrade, don't we?

BL.

Check out my post above to 7o7munoz7o7.... it should help. I should also add that you should wait a few minutes before restarting the phone.

Just did it but it didn't work. Maybe I'll shut it off for a few more mins and see what happens.

How exactly are people freakin judging battery performance 10 minutes after installing the update? Of course, after an install everything will be faster and better! The whole damn thing just installed, rebooted, cleared caches etc. Just wait a day or two then post your findings.

Stop, just stop. You're killing my brain cells. How exactly would having "everything will be faster and better" or having it "rebooted, cleared caches etc." lead to worse battery life? So, as my iPhone accumulates more crap over the next few days and becomes more sluggish (which will undoubtedly happen, no argument there), my battery life will get better as a result?

I'm guessing that you need to let your battery discharge completely and recharge it to recalibrate the battery meter.

Try option two (which updates the carrier settings) as well... it seems to have helped others. Also try a hard reset instead of just turning it off/on.

What's weird is that I update my wife's 4S OTA which took about 4-5 minutes. I plugged in my iPhone 4 and updated thru iTunes and it was going to take 44 minutes! After 10 minutes of downloading it thru there I just canceled it, unplugged it and download it OTA and it only took 4-5 minutes.

What's that about?

That's because the OTA update is a delta update, which means that only the differences are downloaded. In my case (iPhone 4S), the file was about 55 MB.

If you download it via iTunes, you download the whole operating system, which is around 800 MB, or so I've heard.

Cheers,

iOS 5 already installed??

A friend of mine got an ipad a week ago, and I have just checked that 5.0.1 was already installed in it! I went to software upadate section, but it said that the software was already up to date.

It appears to me that if you update Over the Air.. it only downloads and replaces the files that are covered in the fix. If you download through itunes it will download basically the entire OS5 and do a whole new update which would take longer.

Just go for the OTA

Not Helping

After updating and charging to 100% I left the phone untouched for an hour and now am at 92%

OK, I see that it was 790.7mb for the iTunes update.

I get around 8-9 hours of usage and 24 hours of standby from one full charge, am I just lucky or is this what you guys get as well?

Wow just had my Iphone 4s for 2 charges cycles. I didnt believe all this battery problems until I experienced this my self. I turn off my phone at 5 percent. Then about 10 minutes later went to turn it on, I got the dead plug in your phone to charge picture! Why would it drain when it is off? DAaaaannnnggg! I want to test some more before I update so I can make sure I have a problem. :(

I'm in California, USA and got my update.

I just went into Settings, General, Software update and it was there.

Got the new update and cant notice a thing (In Frederick MD, BTW). Still drains while sleeping. :(

Apple has seriously dropped the ball on the 4S, Im contemplating going back to the 4...Siri and the other upgrades arent compensating for the battery delta. I was hoping for what Apple achieved with the iPad 2 (incredible processing improvements with neglible battery loss). iPhone 5:rolleyes:

- I have notifications on for Phone, Viber, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Reminders, Occasions, Facebook, Google+, eBuddy Pro, Angry Birds and Game Center;

I noticed that when I cut off Facebook's notifications, my battery draw was WAY nicer. It seems as if that particular app's notification function tries to push constantly to catch EVERY.SINGLE.THING people post. It didn't really align with the notifications that i turned off on the actual Facebook site.

Thanks for the help.. but it still isn't' working. Oh man this is painful now.... never realized how important it was!

You completely misunderstood what he said, didn't you?
