No sign of it on my itunes or phone, both say i'm update on ios5

Question (since I haven't had any of the betas to this point)

Assuming I am not following posts like this on MacRumors, does my iOS device, at some point, alert me that an update is available or is it a manual check process?

If I don't manually check "Software Update" will I get a message that says something like "An update is available..."??

Still no OTA for me either (California)

Very good question scr, I've always assumed it's only a manual check, or maybe it checks every 2 weeks automatically like iTunes.

thank u steve, love u hate u and miss u

ps- steve... hope u loved the adobe flash demise thingy, see u sometime in the afterlife

So what if I go through my computer and get the 800MB update? Is it really that big? Or it just replaces stuff

So, does anyone know if the OTA update will show automatically as a push notification, or do i need to go to settings and check for updates manually?

waiting for iphone dev to say it is safe to upgrade to 5.0.1

You may have a long wait. There was enough information put out yesterday saying do not update if you want a jailbreak. They are almost certain to patch the Charlie Miller vulnerability and that may be an issue.

What afterlife? Heaven? Hell?

If I update via iTunes, is it going to require a full resync of all my media? Don't have time for that...

That's really dumb. So bandwidth only matters if you're d/ling from your phone?

If you download to the phone it knows what version you have and can give you the proper version.

If you're downloading a link on your computer, it can't be sure what your phone has.* So it can give you a list of every update and make you pick (un-apple-like) or it can just offer you everything wrapped up in one.

* Unless your phone is right there, already plugged in....in which case, why didn't you just do it on the phone?

Can I just say how damn, damn, damn nice it is to get this over the air. Downloading to iTunes, plugging the iPhone or iPad in and waiting for it to backup followed by a huge install was such a freaking pain. This was painless.

Such a good thing.
