Since the GM should be 100% identical to the public version, I don't think so. I'll find out in an hour or so. In the worst case I brick my phone for 7 days.

Are you downloading from dev-servers? I am and it's super-slow! :(

I think it's pretty ridiculous that they support iPhone 3GS, but not the original iPad. They were still selling the original iPad about a year and a half ago. They still have original iPads that under warranty.

I guess when you buy an Apple product now, you can expect to be dumped from software support before your device is even old?

The original iPad has basically the same internals as the 3GS but the 3GS is only pushing to a 320x480 screen while the iPad has to push to 1024x768. That's a whole lot more pixels the original iPad has to contend with and without any substantial difference in processor or graphics over the 3GS.

The 3Gs is just more capable. In fact, benchmarks show it being more capable than the iPhone 4 for the same reason. Its paltry 320x480 screen has given it a long lease on life.

Do you have to sync with itunes to get your music/podcasts etc or does it wipe them?

If you do an update, it keeps all your data, music and apps. If you do restore, you need to have a recent backup and resync music and apps. I would recommend the latter to avoid any "leftovers" from previous beta versions.

Gold Master and Developer Accounts

Does my memory severe me well? I thought you do not need to have a developer-registered iDevice to install a GM, since it's identical to the public release.

Anyone know?

I've heard something that they have removed the requirement to have a registred UDID, but I'm not sure. Maybe it was too much hassle.

The Golden Master is identical to the release that will be distributed next week, and therefore does not check the developer status of your device with Apple.

Could someone at least post the MD5 values for the GMs from Apple so that people who are torrenting them can be sure they're getting the real deal?

Having iOS6 be good to go with a 3GS phone and not the first-gen iPad is a pretty serious FU from apple.

For a 500 dollar plus device to go from introduction to "ready for the landfill" in less than a 1000 days is pretty sad.

Ios 6gm

I downloaded the IOS6 GM how should I install? I'm running IOS6 beta 4....restore then update?

I would suggest reading the release. It lists all the products it will work with.
Obviously you can install iOS 6 on the 3GS, just like you could iOS 4 on 3G. My question is if its performance is acceptable, or so horrible that it's better to stay with iOS 5?

I don't really agree. A phone gets pretty beat up in 2 years. An iPad is likely to last much longer, plus it's more expensive. I'm really more concerned with the passage of time than the number of updates. At this rate, in a year it will be completely obsolete and with almost no updated app support.

What this really means, is that Apple expects us to upgrade our hardware, even expensive hardware, very frequently. It is also statement about how poor the hardware is that they put in the original.

Actually the iPhone unsubsidized is more expensive than the iPad.
Also it is a statement on how much the technology has advanced in 2 1/2 years.

Yes some NEW things won't work, but here is nothing that you are running on your iPad 1 today that it won't be able to do in X years if it is still physically working. You might not be able to run certain new apps, but those apps might not only require an updated version of iOS but also have hardware requirements that the iPad 1 wouldn't have either.

Sure I wish the iPad 1 would get another update, I have 3 of them in my family along with 2 iPad 2's and one "new" iPad.
