I have 7.1.2 on my iPad Mini Retina and will never upgrade. If any Apps that I have that says I need to have 8.X before downloading; that "App" gets deleted.

And if any future Apps will not run on 7.1.2; it gets deleted too and I will hunt for their competitor's App to if it will run on my iPad!

You felt the need to share that with us? Didn't know the forum had become Facebook... :p

You're going to end up with a fairly useless device as more apps start to drop support for iOS 7. We have an iPad mini retina running 8.1.3 and it's smooth, with battery life seeing obvious improvements, so your loss!

Ease up, he's obviously easily confused. I'm waiting for the YouTube video he posts showing him deleting new (future) apps that require iOS 8 or above...or more to the point, I want to see how he's going to install them in the first place. :D

Since this update, my Mail app seems to often get stuck downloading items. And, I checked battery usage and the Mail app is WAY up. Anyone else having this issue?

No. Perhaps sign out of the account in Setup and then add it back? If that doesn't work, a reset, and if that doesn't work, reinstall iOS (ugh)?

I was about to reply to your post but my Fleksy keyboard didn't show up. How ironic. It's still a pain in the ass unfortunately. Right after the update it seemed fine for the most part, but in reality it's just as bad as before.

I guess 8.2 is our last hope but I have a feeling we won't see a proper fix until iOS 9

thanks so much! I think I'll wait then. I'm not in love with Apple's quicktype, but it'll continue to do for now.

Battery Life is OK after iTunes update

I know people often joke here about battery life. But wanted to just note an observation... After performing an OTA update to 8.1.3, I noticed that my battery life had dropped significantly. The same thing occured after updated to 8.1.2. In both cases, I resolved the issue by downloading the OS and performing the update usingiTunes. Not sure why this resolves the issue, but I was able to address the problem using iTunes in both cases.

Also, noticed that with the update there was a carrier update (US Verizon), which happened through iTunes.

Overall, my experience with 8.1.2 has been good.

The system update will free up a lot of space because it clears out the system caches. These will build back up over time, so your normal free space might not change that much after you've used the phone for a while. A hard reset will also free up storage space (though not as much as an OS update).

After I did the update, my free space increased from 5.4 GB to 6.0 GB. A little more space freed up than normal for an iOS update on my phone, but nothing out of the ordinary.

If you restore from a backup, that will clear out a lot of the app caches. If you have a lot of apps that you haven't used in a while, you could also see a lot space freed up. As with the system caches, the app caches will build back up as you use the apps.

More permanent free space gets cleared out if you restore your device as new. A lot of garbage data from botched app and media downloads or other failed operations will build up over time. Restoring the device as new is the only way to clear out a lot of this cruft. On one occasion, I purged 3 GB of junk files by restoring the device as new, and then restoring my apps and data from a backup.

wow, very interesting information!

great post, thank you!

Incase people are interested in regards to the storage reduction. My friend yesterday updated his 5S from 7.1.2 to 8.1.3 and he only needed 1.8 GB free storage to install. Before he would have needed about 5GB to install which is a huge difference and the main reason he couldn't upgrade. Quite nice and I'm sure this will make a lot more people upgrade now.
Sorry if someone already mentioned this.

I really miss Steve Jobs, these things never happen so frequently when he was alive. I was very scared, since many users were complaining about speed. Now a new update? I'm not doing it. I don't see the point.

Who's happy? What wasn't so frequent?

The point is that it is an update ;) Steve Jobs also released updates, in fact when the iPhone was launched it was one of the main differentiators that a phone received updates :)
