This is a bad joke Apple!

Its just a big iPod Touch with very little extended functionality!

Book Store is nice, UI improvements nice, but they are not $500 nice when you already have an iPhone! The screen is nice, but so is the one on my MBP, and the MBP is only a few inches bigger and I really dont find it bulky at all.

The big point of the thing is surf the web like never before, yeah thats all fine and good until you run into some flash content.

I love the mac but these mobile products are becoming dumber and dumber everyday, and based on this iPhone 4 isnt going to be all everyone hopes it would be. When my contract is up in July and Im not impressed with the iPhone it might be off to the Android for me, or maybe ill just buy a messaging phone and an ipod Nano.

What does this offer me that a Netbook doesn't?

Umm...
*Virtual keyboard that adapts to the task I am doing at the moment (see Numbers demonstration). Netbook keyboards are small, cramped, flimsy, and are terrible for any data entry task
*IPS screen that is actually visible at any angle
*User interface that is designed for a device of this size. Ever tried to use Firefox on a typical netbook 1024x600 screen?
*Small weight and tiny size. Comparing the iPad to your typical Eee PC clone is laughable
*Easy sync of data with your main computer
*Youtube videos that are not choppy (yes, I am looking at you, Intel Atom)
*If you have a Windows Netbook: no Windows Registry to deal with. No drive-by download malware attacks. No bugged standby mode/no slow as molasses "hibernation"/no 4.5 minute boot process (I am basing this on my experience with iPhone and iPod Touch)
*If you have a Linux netbook: no half-baked, bloated software with garish interface to aggravate you (yes, I am pointing at you, OpenOffice, Gimp, and Inkscape).

Technically speaking, yes, you can do all of the things the iPad does with a netbook. But will it be as fun, intuitive, or pleasant? Emphatically no.
I expect the netbook (or iPad) to last about two years. For ~$10 more per month I will choose the iPad over that creaky Acer with a microscopic touchpad, thank you very much.

Finally, there is an issue of resale value. A 2 year old netbook belongs in your local thrift store. A 2 year old iPad will sell on Craigslist, just like 2 year old iPod sells on Craigslist or a 2 year old MBP sells on Craigslist.

Yes, I will be in line on launch day :D

I think it look pretty sick.

The interface they were showing off has so much potential. Devs (like, lets say, ME) are gonna have a field day. everything the iPhone was too small for will mow work brilliantly.

I'm buying one.

I love apples design team. Just unsure why we need a big ipod touch? Also no flash support STILL. what kind of browsing experience is that?:apple:

The Ipad is sad...

I'm a die-hard mac user. Magical? Ha! Steve, it's just a big ipod touch! No camera??? No multitasking? No flash? No way to write on it??? This is a huge let down.

PLEASE FIX the IMAC I7 and SHIP IT IN LESS THAN 3 WEEKS and update the damn macbook pros so the is a product I want to purchase.

What was the rumor about "you'll be surprised by the way you will interact with it"? I'm surprised alright... in the worst way. (and again, I'm an apple fan...thing is is overhyped PR BS).

I at least pictured having a textbook on it... making notes on the pages and saving them, and being able to video conference.

SAD DAY. VERY SAD.:mad::(:mad::confused::eek:

And WHY NO WIFI SYNC????????

This REALLY SUCKS........ **** YOU STEVE... YOU ARE ACTING LIKE BILL GATES.... MAYBE THE NEW LIVER ISN'T TAKING... GET YOUR ENZYMES CHECKED...

Not for people who need to work as well as play.

I'm not buying one.

I think it will sell well though, although i'm not completely convinced.

I have £1000 sitting in my bank account waiting to see what I will buy to compliment my 2008 Mac Pro and that thing will be a 13" MBP for sure now.

It is certainly a 'toy' device and not a tool as would have hoped for. The things that make this so (in my opinion) are:

- No accesable file system

- No USB mass storage or printers etc

- Small amount of storage (64gb max)

- Not an HD display even (less than 720p)

- No ilife even, surely this should have been done before iwork?

- Too small.

- Keyboard onscreen will be a bitch to use.. on your lap? on a desk? holding it with thumbs to type?

- CODEC support will be limited to H.264 no doubt. Massive fail there, i refuse to re-encode every movie or tv show i want to watch.

- E reader support will be locked down

- Software deployment model limits development too much for a device of this size, i can get OS X on a netbook NOW and it works well.

As i said i'm pretty sure this thing will sell, but in my opinion it has missed the mark by a wide margin.

Also, assuming the CPU is an ARM 1Ghz equivalent to the Snapdragon in the Nexus one, this is an underpowered machine for any of the things i mentioned above.

... and i had crazy dreams of using Pixelmator or photoshop on this.. I must be mad.

Here's another way Apple missed a huge opportunity....
"Input and Output

* Dock connector (Maybe they'll offer an HDMI>Dock Connector adfapter?)
* 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack
* Built-in speakers
* Microphone
* SIM card tray (Wi-Fi + 3G model only)

NO HDMI connectivity means a missed opportunity to expand the usefulness of the 720p screen. SUPER STUPID, unless I missed it.:rolleyes:

Case

Apple, someone, please make a slim hard folder like case for this device that has a keyboard on the interior of one side, a connection port for the device so that the device will automatically connect to the built in keyboard once inserted.

From a purely eBook reader the Kindle DX is almost $500 so the iPad essentially renders a one-dimensional Kindle obsolete.

That would be the hook for me. I do not have a Kindle but was thinking of getting an eBook reader. iPad should be an easy choice now over a Kindle for anyone looking to buy a reader.

Now if you already have a Kindle is this worth buying?

Oddly enough the biggest group of Kindle owners I know are older and less tech-savvy who would presumably be a good market for the iPad.

I will say Apple completely missed the boat when it comes to reading books on the iPad. Nothing comes close to reading a book on an e-ink device like the Kindle etc. I will likely get an iPad, but I sure as heck won't be reading books on it. E-ink > LCD, period.

I'll probably get the 3rd/4th gen when it's cheaper and my Macbook/iPod Touch are outdated.

People say this is a netbook killer.

File system: no.

.

Why do you need a file system? I'm not sure I want one. I just want to be able to search for my content - not files. I really don't care where its stored. on iTunes, the device or in the cloud just as along as I can access it. You're so 1993.

"Assisted GPS"...what is that? cell/wifi triangulation again? bleh.

Anyway, I like how it looks. And I guess the price points are OK..and I love the software. Didn't need a fully fledged OS. The internet, email & media experience looks great.

But the standard feature set is pretty disappointing. I didn't need anything fancy that the rumors were all pointing to...but even if you were expecting just a big iPhone...it's still missing (I assume) true GPS & a camera. Something like this is screaming for video chat. Even cheap $250 netbooks have cams.

But of course this is strategy. People will still buy this (me included)...and in a year we'll fork over again for the version with a camera.

However, my netbook ain't going anywhere just yet.

Assisted GPS is the GPS in the iPhone. I believe it's the best GPA tech available. It's full GPS that uses cell data to help with positioning.

That keyboard dock has got to be the stupidest accessory ever. what year is this?

why wouldn't the dock just have bluetooth built in, so you could use your / any bluetooth keyboard?

actually attaching the keyboard to a dock thing... ridiculously ugly and stupid. and backwards. WTF?

The computer itself has blue-tooth... You should pay attention.

Hey! it's cheaper than the original iPhone!!!

Did I miss the part where they explain how this is going to Revolutionize publishing and that Steve Jobs is the next Gutenberg? Sure it has an e-reader app that looks great for the latest best-sellers, but where are all the magazine publishers everyone was talking about with their dynamic content magazines? Where's the newspapers? Where's the textbooks?

Don't get me wrong it's a fun looking device, but no way does it revolutionize anything.
