Are YOU kidding? Name me ONE thing that's useful and based on Flash? Ads? Video players that use a ton of CPU? Whole websites based on flash (that should have a non-flash version btw)?

Give me a break. Flash is useless!!! In my daily life the only place I see it is for browser ads.

You are right and wrong at the same time.

Flash is genius that's completely underutilized and poorly utilized. It's the only auto-scaling resolution independent vector based container for the internet- but it's rarely used that way.
Flash splash/home pages are 100% wrong as UI. Sadly, that's how much of Flash is used. Jakob then fixed it a few years ago but it's now used mostly as a container for still images and some animation.

I could go on.:D

Still waiting for somebody to tell me why I should spend $200+ more on this than a netbook. I enjoy my Dell mini hackintosh... which looks like it does everything that this tablet does.

Anybody?

I agree. I've got a $250 netbook that has a camera, can do all the same stuff this can do plus lets me expand memory (via usb drive). Apple took all of the weaknesses of the Touch and blew it up into a bigger screen.

The wasted space on the desktop of this thing just drives me crazy. Still just four apps in the doc? WTF Apple? It needs to be more laptop and less iPod.

There is NO CONTRACT. You can use it with ANY CARRIER.

Connectivity
Some models have Wi-Fi exclusively, while some have 3G as well. It's with AT&T, and costs either $15 a month for 250MB of data, or $30 for unlimited data. With the plan, you get access to AT&T's Wi-Fi hotspots as well. Best of all, it's a prepaid service—no contract. You can activate it from the iPad any time, and cancel whenever you want.

Multitasking on this device with this new CPU is a no-brainer...for 4.0.

Which is coming soon anyway.

Very doubtful.

I'd be surprised to see iphone 4 within 6 months. More like a year.

They _just_ updated the SDK. They're going to piss off lots of developers if they do another major update in a few months time.

i find it funny that people are complaining about the "massive bezel" without the bezel, where the hell would you be able to grasp the device without confusing the touch screen sensors? oh that's right, the rear of the device you just be self adhesive for easier single handed use.

Yes of course you have to have some space to hold it, but not that much! Half a centimetre or maybe a centimetre would be enough! I'm sure Apple didn't leave that much space just so we can hold it, but because technology won't allow to make the screen bigger or the electronics behind it smaller with these proportions. They could easily make algorithms to filter out touches that occur at the edge of the screen, just like they did with their Trackpads: your thumb resting on the bottom of the Trackpad won't confuse it.

iPad + Skype

I am wondering about this option, not sure if it has been mentioned:

I use Skype on my iPod Touch using Wi-fi and it works great for making and receiving calls. With this new "iPad", do you think it would be possible to tether the 3G connection from the iPad to my iPod Touch via Bluetooth or some sort of application if I am NOT in a Wi-fi area?

I am inquiring because I would like to get rid of my high monthly plan with Verizon, and simply buy the month-to-month data plan on the iPad while using Skype. It would be much cheaper if this could work.

Thanks for your input and thoughts!

That is funnier than you probably realise ;)

The missing camera is more than a little disappointing though - the Nano has a (video) camera and this doesn't. The people calling it a giant iPod touch are about right, I think.

I don't trust anything that bleeds for a week ev'ry month and doesn't die

I am an academic, so unless I can download and view pdf documents (i.e. scholarly articles in pdf format from major journals) the iPad is useless to me. Is there a way to download and view pdf documents, or can I only view them in safari?

The iPad needs to be able to download and organize files from the internet, movies, pdf, etc. Otherwise, it's not particularly useful for anything beyond casual surfing.

I agree completely. It also needs a really good way of syncing with a desktop word processor.

I'm wondering if that new keyboard dock will ever work with an iPhone or iPod touch. That combination actually interests me a bit more.

"Assisted GPS"...what is that? cell/wifi triangulation again? bleh.

Anyway, I like how it looks. And I guess the price points are OK..and I love the software. Didn't need a fully fledged OS. The internet, email & media experience looks great.

But the standard feature set is pretty disappointing. I didn't need anything fancy that the rumors were all pointing to...but even if you were expecting just a big iPhone...it's still missing (I assume) true GPS & a camera. Something like this is screaming for video chat. Even cheap $250 netbooks have cams.

But of course this is strategy. People will still buy this (me included)...and in a year we'll fork over again for the version with a camera.

However, my netbook ain't going anywhere just yet.

I like it because in a couple months i'm sure it's going to have a bunch of add ons and revolutionary apps.

So whats next?

We now have the iPhone, our tablet, the rumored iTV (now :apple:TV)... is there any other phantom products from Apple left?

Dear PC and Linux users,
I would like to take this opportunity to point out that while a lot of Mac users are just mindless fanboys, many of us are also very intelligent. We weigh the merits of products, compare them to the current market and try to make informed opinions and decisions. We understand the technology and know about the alternatives. Please do not judge us by the incoherent ramblings of the mindless mass user base.

Sincerely,
macuserx86

I won't.

This product is sooooooo embarrassing, the fanboys here are frozen in shock to rate it a "positive".

Hugely disappointing. Although the device is pretty much what I expected - larger bezel besides - I had hoped that the updated iPhoneOS to be a lot more radical, especially concerning the input. Instead all we got was an enlarged iphone touch screen keyboard and physical keyboard the likes of which Nokia used sell 6 years ago.

Bottom

Wow, apple have finally completely disappeared up their own bottom!

Weeks of hype and they deliver a over sized iphone! How can steve jobs claim that this can compete against netbooks

A netbook costs £250, has a 160gb hard drive a 1.6 ghz processor and has 1GB ram alongside Windows 7. It has USB ports, VGA port, 2 SD card ports, network port and camera. It can browse the net as good as pretty much anything and It can run flash apps. It also runs all video codecs, torrent downloads and pretty much anything else. The only thing it can't really do is full gaming as the GPU is not really up to much.

The thing is they will sell millions of these things as people will buy anything as long as it has an apple logo on it.

By the summer, this thing will have OS 4.0, and will do more stuff. Shame about the camera, though. iChatting would be fun. But Apple has to have something for version 2, I guess. Would be nice if the SD adapter would also exchange data, and not just download pictures.

In a world where we are FINALLY appreciating widescreen movies and TV's are ALL moving to a 16:9 format why do we go back to a 4:3 aspect ratio on a brand new 2010 device!!

:(

- Matt

Simply because nobody reads books in 16:9 format. 16:9 is great for movies and TV, but doesn't work all that well for everything else

Assisted GPS uses cell phone towers to QUICKLY home in on the GPS location before all satellites are acquired.

Actually there are two kinds of "assisted GPS". One uses full GPS PLUS cell tower info, the other uses cell towers only, with no satellites. I believe the iPhone uses the latter, so this probably is as well.

Either way, Apple should be more specific in their product info.
