No iChat camera. Immensely disappointing.

Indeed. For that reason alone I'm not buying this, as cool as it is.

iChat and other IM clients with audio/video functionality is one of the primary reasons i have a laptop or other portable communication device (with internet connectivity). This will not supplant my laptop or iphone as an international or domestic travel companion, nor fill any existent need to a degree that justifies purchase.

Bummer...here's to hoping for Rev. 2

I see this as a transitory device, marking the beginning of the end of the Mac OS and Windows OS as we know them (with their metaphors: the desktop, the typewriter, the folders, the drives, the documents, the applications, etc. and their business model). It is an interesting device, but still very immature. IMO his immediate impact is a far cry from the way the graphic interface of the first Mac (at the beginning of the 80s) made obsolete the command line interface. I see a very promising future, but I will hold on my iPhone and MacBook for now, and honestly there isn't a gap in between that i need to fill.

Still waiting for somebody to tell me why I should spend $200+ more on this than a netbook. I enjoy my Dell mini hackintosh... which looks like it does everything that this tablet does.

Anybody?

I think maybe as a more tech savvy person it's easy to forget how cool and easy this is to use for someone who isn't. Just because we have all this technology around us most people only want to go skin deep. They have no use for Disk Utility or Multi-tasking.....
.

u're right about everything what u said, but in my opinion, it's not a replacement for computers, u just can't have only this, u need another computer to synchronize with.

it doesn't have a usb port where u can connect a pendrive or usb hard drive to store all ur things, u must get them from the net, or your home network = another computer.

in this sense, i think it doesn't worth it just for the limited storage UNLESS apple would offer MOBILE ME service for free to everyone who buy an iPad. Apple is now a 50 billion company, is it so hard to spend 500k on a server room for ur users? c'mon!

of course there'll be another intelligent company who'll create de dock connector cable with a usb female port on the other side, but still it won't be that easy cos probably u'll have to jailbreak the thing for it to work.

this is the most important reason why i won't reccomend this thing. and of course, the absence of a front camera for conferences.

these are HIGHLY important items for me at least.

sorry for the long post.
:apple:

Maybe a really large fannypack to carry around their MaxiPad--I don't think so.
That is funnier than you probably realise ;)

The missing camera is more than a little disappointing though - the Nano has a (video) camera and this doesn't. The people calling it a giant iPod touch are about right, I think.

Bring some colors to the bathroom

I can picture buying this and using it exclusively in the bathroom while I go number two... :)

Hm, it is probably the best idea to use this device. Indeed, from now on visits to the bathroom would be very entertaining experience...
I also found my aluminum waste basket to be a perfect, color coordinated solution to stove iPad between visits.

Thanks Apple for filling the voids in this area!

The iPad looks great but i cannot help feeling somethings missing?

Hi

Usually I am the first to go Yeah, great at all new toys from Apple, but I cannot help feeling that the iPad has oh so just missed the mark here. The things I cannot see (but maybe I missed them)

Full HD (1080 not 720)
Multitasking
Full support for full programs (but maybe this will change as programmers adapt programs to more fully featured apps).
Support for Pen input

Maybe it just I don't like reading which is the main killer app form the ipad.
However I think it could be that the software is just not there for it yet. The ones that I would love to see ported

Circus ponies notebook
Cut down version of Photoshop elements/iphoto
FLASH (I am suprised at Apple for not addressing this one as it has long been a complaint of the ipod/iphone, I know those are probably limited by hardware but this thing has its own Apple custom chip where they could do what the hell they wanted.

Oh well time will tell but now we know why apple purchased the chip company (sorry forgot the name). Could this herald the way for Apple to produce all its own chips? Or at least the systems ones (I am not sure they would give up the Intel CPUs that quickly).

Oh well thats enough from me what does everyone else think?

I was hoping for more, but hey thats what my MBP is for:) I'm not going to dis it till I try it, because for 500 bucks (starting price)its a sweet E-reader!! Not to mention most of my iphone apps will work on it and my itunes movies will be bigger than iphone size! AND its totally unlocked so I am free to find whatever Data carrier I want! All I know is it will be hella lot easier reading it than it is my iphone when I travel.

I do not get why are some people getting mad but this just came out and of course a lot of things are missing that we expected, who cares by next year they will update it and add more stuff to it. Anyways, so this all there was to talk about? Nothing new on iTouch or iTunes or even a software updates? BLAH! lol!

I'm not going to say 'meh' on this device but it's not overwhelmingly great. I do think it's great starter device, as it evolves it'll get better. In a couple generations it'll be very good just like the iPhone and OSX.

Beats a Kindle

From a purely eBook reader the Kindle DX is almost $500 so the iPad essentially renders a one-dimensional Kindle obsolete.

I've read a lot about people claiming that think this cant beat netbooks but, as a student, this does everything I would use my laptop/netbook for and it doesn't run windows. Sounds pretty good to me.

People say this is a netbook killer.

File system: no.
Multi tasking: no.
Flash support: no.
Physical keyboard: no.
Cheaper: Hell no.

Netbooks are fine.

I am an academic, so unless I can download and view pdf documents (i.e. scholarly articles in pdf format from major journals) the iPad is useless to me. Is there a way to download and view pdf documents, or can I only view them in safari?

The iPad needs to be able to download and organize files from the internet, movies, pdf, etc. Otherwise, it's not particularly useful for anything beyond casual surfing.

I am so with you on this. I'm sure you have run into this - subscriptions. When I'm at home, I can't get jack. We need to use the schools internet to get anything. 'd love to leave the laptop at home, get the articles I need using this device and then sync them to my computer at home.

There needs to be a better device to computer link than there is. Something like a downloads folder. I'd wait until I see how they are getting documents on and off with iWork before getting too upset.

Most people who buy computers these days use them for web browsing, IM, Facebook, games, YouTube, music etc.

iPhone apps are hugely popular.

Flashy touch screens are hugely popular.

iWork gives it a practical purpose, and will make it more attractive to students and business people. So will the newspaper apps. And book app/store.

It will sell.

Good post. Thank you. After all Jobs did place the device between a laptop and an Iphone/touch on the graphic. I'm not sure why people on here expect full OS X/laptop power experience on this device. Thats not what its trying to be. Buy a laptop if thats what you require. This device is situated at all of those users who surf, email, blog and use basic apps all day long. I see them in Starbucks everyday - they're not writing company reports or marking up legal contracts. They are web 2.0 people.

I like it. Its just what fits the bill for me. I hate carrying a laptop around. They are way too heavy to just throw in your bag.

I'm seeing Apple drip feed a few more specs and surprises before release just like they did with the iPhone.

One minus wasn't the camera for me but an SD slot for photos. Perhaps they've thought of that already?

Can also see cloud computing kicking here. Storage won't be such a big thing come 60 days when they announce the storage part.

Its good device and look forward to hearing about the hands on reports.

One last question.... video editing? Perhaps they will sell an external camera for that?

Still waiting for somebody to tell me why I should spend $200+ more on this than a netbook. I enjoy my Dell mini hackintosh... which looks like it does everything that this tablet does.

Anybody?

Sorry, but I imagine most (if not all) people could care less whether you do that or not. Enjoy your Dell mini. Seriously.

That's strange, my netbook has:

-A trimmed down Core 2 based processor with 2GB RAM
-250GB of storage
-6 hours of battery life
-Can run the full x86 library of apps
-I can download/install apps without going through the App Store
-I can save, edit, and upload documents, pdfs, presentations, spreadsheets etc.
-I can browse the entire internet, including flash
-It has a better resolution
-It can read SD card info, meaning I can move photos from my camera onto it to edit or store
-It has USB slots, meaning I can charge other devices, read from external storage, and even tether a phone
-Oh yeah, it even multi tasks!

Oh, and it's priced less than the cheapest iPad which has fraction of those capabilities. So tell me again, how did netbooks get killed?

What is your OS?

2 Things:

1. No chance of running OS X software, and to get 3G and Wifi I need to pay AT&T MORE money?

2. If it's so awesome to type on the screen, why have an "optional" keyboard dock?

Biggest disappointment if you ask me and worthless for someone who owns an iPhone already.

It's obvious you don't have an iphone... I wish I could use a BT keyboard on my iPhone all the time.

As someone mentioned, I could see me using this as a sketch pad [if a nice stylus comes out....].

Overall though I am quite disappointed with the lack of multi-tasking and cameras. I ditched my iphone for a HTC Hero, and was very glad I did - the OS on that is fantastic and so much more fun to use than an iphone.

So, I am holding out to see what HTC have up their sleeves.

The thing that will make this the 'top dog' against all other tablets will be the stores, nothing else. No doubt all the sheep will buy it thinking it is the best, but I would bet that some Android devices coming up will certainly give this a spanking!

We will see I guess!:)

are you kidding? have you not surfed the internet in the last ten years?

sooo much content now is based on flash. i can't believe you don't realize that.

Right.

What, other than video (a problem that is really already solved) and games (hello 140,000 apps), are your problem?

I work in the web industry, so I would love to know what, other than those two things, dominate your web browsing experience on a day to day basis. Because most of what I see is HTML and ajax.

Man, what are you guys going to complain about when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out with multitasking? It won't be long.

The 2 hour battery life. Of course, most people use their iPhones while they are plugged in, right?
