If your smart you'll get an SDK tonight and make an iPad version very quickly before someone else steals your market.

we have several iphone compatible features, but the iphone SDK simply cannot do all of the things that our app already does - the app would be a bit crippled

Probably already been said, but this seems like a slower speed netbook with touchscreen capabilities in a different form. Still looks nice, but the price seems a little steep for what you get.

I love ads where the people who made it have to tell us how great it is...

So I have a choice between a vertically-supported laptop with a proper keyboard or a (presumably lower-spec'd) device without a keyboard that I have to support to see? I can see the fanboys buying the first batch, but not who else would want one.

Keep the target audience in mind, and that's people who probably don't even know what "multitasking" is.

But those people still do it, even if they don't know they are. They'd notice if their laptops couldn't have more than one thing open at a time.

On the iPhone, the realization comes to them when they see their friends doing things on their other smart phones they can't do. They may not understand multitasking, but they recognize the results.

ARE THERE SERIOUSLY NO USB PORTS!?!?!? This went from "best product of all time by a longshot" to "completely awesome" to "need to get one" to "wanna get one" to "pretty cool" to "okay" to "epic failure!"

Wow, all of that without actually waiting for the final product to be released. Better save your iPad money for the Prozac prescription you obviously need.

that's too bad.

I wasn't in love with the thing until he said $499. I'm in and then when they add the camera and GPS next winter I'll give it too my daughter.

Assisted GPS is a GPS chip with data support so it's better than GPS by itself. Maybe read up a little.

No, it does not. I wish everyone would stop saying that.

* Wi-Fi
* Digital compass
* Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model)
* Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model)

Thats not GPS. Thats approximating your position through AT&T's towers and whatever wifi spot you're connected to. Not GPS.

Assisted GPS = real GPS

You're an idiot wrapped in a moron.

utter garbage.
64gb, 1gHz, no camera, massive bezel, nothing new at all, for $829???
$30 a month for 3g? no thanks, o2 can do unlimited data in the UK for £7.50. I've got my own wifi at home. I would rather have a proper LAPTOP, or a macbook for like $50 more

Well if you've got Wi-Fi at home, then you wouldn't be buying the $829 3G version now would you?

But what's the purpose of having an eBook reader open in the background at the same time you are reading emails? If you want to run a web server in the background, get a desktop.

This is like the engineer who said "But what's it for?" about the transistor.

Let's see you multitask on a Nokia. Those friends probably have iPhones and even then... multitasking can be added as it's software.

gee, this question has been answered 100 times before.

people want a front facing webcam because they use video skyp a lot.

every netbook has one, every notebook has one. if this is to replace netbooks they should have included a cheap webcam.

this question is so dumb. the ipad has a microphone. why don't you complain about that because who records music on an ipad.:rolleyes:

.. and every MacBook, MacBook Pro, and even Apple's LED display come with one. Seems like a strange omission.

And what was wrong with the HP Tablet 2 weeks ago? Nobody really took a notice ... because it runs MS OS?

becuase it's not designed exclusively to be used as a multi-touch device with your hands. This is simply a mouse metaphor OS translated to a device with a touchscreen.

The iPad OS has been designed from scratch to be used exclusively with your hands. There is a lot of complacency about this because people are so familiar with iPhone Touch OS but I think they will see that iPad is the first time that a number of desktop OSX apps have been designed from the bottom up exclusively for the Touch OS.

I think it's just the beginning.

Furthermore, because the HP is a standard OS it means that third-party developers can't leverage the multi-touch the way devs can with the Apple SDK and the iPhone Multi-Touch OS.

Really, give Microsoft a few years and they will release a multi-touch OS branch of Windows to attempt to catch up - by then the 'haters' will have come round and we'll all be happy again!

At $699 for the 64GB unit I would say that there are plenty of offerings in the similar price range. You can buy a LOT of laptop power for $699 that will allow you to do much more than what you could do on the iPad...and hey, they can multitask too! How about that? :p

brad

Um...how about you tell me WHAT THEY ARE? I asked what models are competitive. An answer that doesn't list a single model isn't helpful at all. And I was asking about tablets, sorry if that wasn't clear.

And yes I know you're comparing it to a Tablet PC, so... the 7+ year old Toshiba M205 Tablet PC I'm dictating this reply on (yes, dictating it) is more useful and powerful and capable than the iPad, and I paid $700 for it.

More powerful? Isn't that one a centrino? How much ram? And what kind of battery life do you get? Would you really want to benchmark it against the iPad for web browsing?

Blazing fast with ARM processor. This must be a joke.

I don't think anyone knows the specifics of the processor yet. And the speed claims are from Engadget:

The speed of the CPU is something to be marveled at. It is blazingly fast from what we can tell. Webpages loaded up super fast, and scrolling was without a hiccup. Moving into and out of apps was a breeze. Everything flew.

Once you get your hands on one, then you can go disagree with them.

Friggin Awesome

If you bought an iPod Touch, then you really can't complain about this thing; it's $60 more and is way more awesome. I love the OS and I love that they used iWork to show that an APP can be desktop class and still BUILT for a touch screen.

The one thing bumming me out is no camera. I really want to video chat with my family on this thing. Flash is a nice religious debate for me. On the one hand, I'd love if I didn't have to make excuses for this thing. Whatever you think of Flash, it would be nice if the iPad could run the entire internet, with all of its pages. On the other hand, I don't really give a **** about Flash and none of the sites I visit us it. I guess they're saving that for next year's model. Oh yeah... no multi-tasking is a bummer. I know I should be more upset about it, but this thing is so star trek it makes me forget things

I wanted a nice small computer to use around the house for surfing the internet, watching videos, and listening to music. I hate netbooks. I can't type on their horrible keyboards, so I'd rather just not have it wasting space on there. A software keyboard with hardware docking keyboard is AWESOME.

This won't be as popular as the iPhone, of COURSE. I do see this as a growing segment for Apple, though. I hope enough people can get over what they think a surfing/media consuming computer needs to be and just dive in. I'll be getting one as soon as I can.

Mac Pro for serious work. iPad for fun. iPhone for necessity.

[...]The German government has issued some fairly strong warnings regarding wireless radioactivity. For what it's worth, cordless (not cell) phones are probably the most dangerous things in this regard, as they give off huge amounts of radiation - significantly more than wireless internet connections. Quite a few people in Germany still choose to have only corded phones for this reason. If you own an cordless phone, always dock it when not in use and never sleep with an undocked (or even docked) cordless phone next to your head!

I am not aware of any serious scientific research that has proven negative health effects for these kinds of radiation, though. Anecdotal "evidence" is practically worthless in this case and while taking certain precautions is certainly never a bad idea, needlessly scaring people and hampering innovation is dangerous as well.

I'd be interested in being proven wrong here, though. What scientific research does the German government use to justify their warnings against common radiation due to cordless phones etc. ?

Maybe I'm wrong, but to me this is not a netbook competitor.

What people should be comparing this to is the Kindle DX.

It (the Kindle DX) is almost $500 ($489) with a 9.7" screen and is basically a one-app device - that being an E-Reader (don't get me wrong it is a GREAT e-reader - I owned one but went back to the basic 6" model)

For almost the same money, we can now get the same size screen with an e-reader, web browser, calendar, all other kinds of apps... and a color TOUCH screen with WiFi-N.

When compared to the Kindle it is a great value.

Is it a netbook or a full multi-tasking macbook? No! And it doesn't need to be.

If you need that functionality... buy a macbook or an Air.

Me, I can't wait to get one to replace my Kindle, surf the web and play a few games...

One question is will the Kindle Reader app for iphone work on the iPad? I hope so.

Just my opinion.

So with data for my iPhone plus this is going to run me $60 additional a year? I mean, I'm obviously only going to be using one at a time, there should be some sort of combo discount in my humble opinion.

Also, anyone notice the physical difference between the 3G enabled and the non-3G version? That black plastic area?

Not everyone is like you. Some of us use our iPhones for data when we are out and about, and other members of my family may be using the iPad at the same time. Also, I suspect the rubberized area on the 3G model is to allow for better cellular reception. Guess where the antenna is? :)

Although Apple dropped "Computer" from it's name, it would be nice to see the Mac get some exposure and attention.

When was the last time a keynote didn't revolve around the iPhone, iPhone OS, or the iPod touch.

To call the iPad the most important thing he's done is a little embarrassing on Jobs part.

It's a big iPod touch, one with 3G and one without. You can't install software on it outwith the App Store and it's closed off from external data sources such as DVD drives.

It's a lovely device, but it's a gimmick in my opinion. This does nothing my iPhone or iMac doesn't. Maybe for watching TV shows in bed or surfing the web in full screen while sitting on the sofa, but revolutionary? No.

Assisted GPS is a GPS chip with data support so it's better than GPS by itself. Maybe read up a little.
Not necessarily better. Often it means it has less channels to track satellites so it needs a helping hand to find a rough location when first enabled, and is more likely to lose signal. Presumably that's why the TomTom iPhone cradle has its own GPS receiver, as the one in the iPhone is poor in my experience compared to previous dedicated GPS units.

Jony Ive

It's so cool that Jony Ive rarely blinks, shaves, or wears a different t-shirt.

I've adapted his recurrent "i" designs theme to all my furniture and cookware and I'm saving-up to lease a DB9.

No, it does not. I wish everyone would stop saying that.

* Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model)

Wrong

It has a dedicated GPS chip (not sure which so could be a pants one) and then on top of that it has the cellular assistance

Let's see you multitask on a Nokia. Those friends probably have iPhones and even then... multitasking can be added as it's software.

No, their friends in this case have something like a Pre. They see them get a text message and flip over to it, and then back to what they were doing. On the iPhone, they get a popup notification at best, open it, wait awhile for the IM app to launch, then hit the home button and re-launch their app, often losing their place in wherever they were in that app. They don't know what a "push notification" or "multitasking" is, but they can tell the Pre experience was better.

I realize it's just software. Software that Apple so far is refusing to provide. That's the whole point.

This I can agree with. I think it's odd that they didn't just include a damn SDCard slot... but you know... Jobs just isn't a fan of Slots and Buttons... so this device must be a dream for him. Only a couple of buttons and basically no slots.

I'm just glad that it has the capability at all!

Using outside devices they could even try to make a CF card reader. Like many cameras have. Then again, we could use the USB camera cable. So there.
