im writing this on a mbp 17 2.66 now.
had an i7 27 inch, but had 2 replacements, and got a refund.
thing is, i dont mind spending my money on things like imac or mbp, because theyre decent. but to spend only around £100 less on a tablet, over buying a base macbook is absolutely pathetic.

What are you talking about? The base MacBook costs $999, the base iPad costs $499. Your math is severely in error.

What's the point?

I don't get it. A fragile $500 gadget that I can use to read a book or an article on a web page. It's an e-reader. Tell me you're honestly going to sit this in your lap and watch a full length movie. Tell me you're going to type an e-mail longer than a 140-character tweet. Tell me you're going to edit full-length documents using the on-screen keyboard. I won't believe you. If you watch apple's in-house video, the guy typing is hunting and pecking on the on-screen keyboard. Imagine using your knees to prop this thing up in your lap while you type, all the while trying to stop it from sliding up your leg. It's already been said, and I apologize for beating a dead horse, but it's an oversized iPod touch. And to not only continue, but to extend an exclusive contract with AT&T? Who does that help?

The only possible plus I see from putting this device on the market is lowering the ludicrous cost of data access by cellular carriers.

Good luck, Steve. I may change my mind, but for the time being? iPass.

"It's only an oversize iPhone/iPod Touch"
"It's not a real computer/netbook/replacement for my MacBook"
"It doesn't show flash"

Really??? Jeez, the whining just get's worse. Thankfully it seems that there's an inverse proportionality between the whining level and the success of the product. Thus, this will be huge :)

WTH do you mean by "just" an iPhone? For the first time I don't have a problem taking "just" my iPhone with me and leaving my laptop at home on business trips. I just wish that the screen was bigger because....

And Flash. I don't like the 'Kill it with fire' meme, but flash surely merits it. And for all of you whining about Apple's lock-down methodologies, just recall the uber lock-down of them all..... Flash.

I've got click-to-flash, and apart from 3 sites, I never click. So yeah, keep Flash away from the iProducts.

As far as reading is concerned, I have read approx 30 books on the iPhone, Stanza FTW, and can't wait to read on the iPad. Funny, I've got a Sony PRS 500, and used to read a lot on it, but while E Ink is great on the eyes, the lack of fluidity in the 500 compared to the iPhone just made me use the phone instead. I like the form-factor of the 500, so this is right up my alley. Couple that with reading pdfs...... heaven.

And the price. That is just a goddam home run. 500 bucks?! Jeez, I'm buying one and keeping the other for a gift.

Are there negatives? Sure, this is a V1 product in the wild. Bezel could be thinner. Need more interface goodness, but expect that will come with 4.0. Camera, yeah, that is an omission, but one I can live without.

Input methodologies? I used to write articles on the Palm with the iRDA keyboard, and it worked great, so no worries there.

I'm well pleased.

I wonder:

  1. If there will be a way to download pictures using my eye-fi cards in my cameras if I'm NOT on my home network.
  2. How much space 32GB will be on this device. On my iPhone, which is plugged into my cars when I use it as an iPod, 16GB is plenty. I don't like scrolling through a lot of music.
  3. How, and really if, you can download something from the Internet. I guess the only things someone would need to download, besides content from iTunes, is .doc, .jpg, .xls, .pdf, etc. No need to download a .dmg file on this.
  4. Is there a missing link as far as magazine subscriptions go? If I subscribe to the hard copy of Motortrend, which I do, is there going to be an app to have the digital version delivered to me?
  5. Let's say I go out of town with my wife. Will the iPad allow different users so she can have a profile with her email etc?

Also, I'm one of those idiots who does play Mafia Wars on Facebook. Since flash isn't supported, does that mean I couldn't play it through the browser if I'm away from home?

I think I'm in the perfect demographic for this thing.

Consumer has no laptop? Check.

Likes to read/look at websites in bed on iPhone (which was a gift), but it's too damn small to look at for hours? Check.

Has a 24" iMac because it was more bang for my buck than any Apple laptop, and the screen is awesome for editing media/playing "important" games (World of Warcraft)? Check.

Never seems to have much more than $500 at a time to spend on something like this, but would get a LOT of use out of an iPhone with a bigger screen, and doesn't want a damn netbook? Check check.

I have a few complaints/concerns... Would I be able to listen to music while I surf the web? If not - fail. I don't need heavy duty multitasking - that's what my desktop is for - but some would be nice.

The OS looks absolutely awful. I hope you can add more than 4 icons to the dock, and I wish there was a better way to display your apps, because the "iPhone icons on a huge screen" look strikes me as really rushed and half-assed, and I expect more from Apple.

The video of the calendar app seems unintuitive. They show the guy's finger pressing the tiny little arrow at the bottom of the screen to go to the next day, but the calendar app looks like a book. Does this mean you can't just flip the pages with your finger like you would a book? And why not? If you really have to use the small arrow to navigate this thing, it seems like a huge oversight. I like turning virtual pages.

No Flash. :( I'd love for the internet to stop using it, but like, they haven't yet, okay? A large part of the internet is completely Flash-based - and not just local restaurant websites, either. Disney and Apple need to have a talk if they're such close friends, because every damn Disney website is absolutely dripping in Flash.

I don't really have a problem with the onscreen keyboard, as I type faster on the iPhone than I write with a pen. But even saying that, I think it's a mistake to not have a stylus for certain tasks, at the user's discretion; I'd love to be able to use this thing as a virtual sketchbook, but that would require a stylus. I don't want to use my fingertip to draw, and I won't. Give me a stylus for drawing!

As far as the good, well... The iPad (really bad name) isn't groundbreaking but it could be very useful. The price is a NICE touch for me... and it'll only get cheaper - awesome. :D

Yes, like the iPhone you will be able to run music while you browse. Also it will have push-notification. Apple have just removed the ability to 'over-run' apps -that is a common failing of mobile OS's is that people launch apps and then forget to close them meaning they stay running. Apple have taken care of the 'good' multi-tasking you need but restricted the 'bad' multi-tasking that get's most users and systems into trouble.

I haven't used it but I'd expect the apps to be a lot of fun and well thought out. Put it this way, buy it , if you don't like it send it back under the 14 days money back returns - what can you lose?

Flash adoption has ground to a halt and is imminently on it's way out. Maybe a wierd way round it but you could get a terminal app for your iPad and then remote desktop to your iMac and run the browser on that for essential flash websites. Essentially that would make your iPad a 'remote screen' to your iMac - pretty cool huh!

Actually, it's assisted GPS, like in the original iPhone. It uses nearby cell towers & Wi-Fi hotspots to try to triangulate your position. I find that on the original iPhone, this is iffy. Sometimes, it gets you within a few feet, or if you're in a building, right outside. Sometimes, it's several hundred yards away.

Actually its the same GPS that the 3GS has - go check the tech specs page of each

Actually that's not assisted GPS, what you are referring to is cell tower triangulation which is totally different.

PLEASE PEOPLE GO AND GET AN EDUCATION or at least do a simple Google search on assisted GPS to learn what it really is before you shoot off your big fat blubberous mouth.

we have several iphone compatible features, but the iphone SDK simply cannot do all of the things that our app already does - the app would be a bit crippled

Wow - I'm amazed. I mean there are some pretty sophisticated apps on the app store. I don't mean to sound sarcastic but your menu must be insanely hi-tech. What's the link again?

No, their friends in this case have something like a Pre. They see them get a text message and flip over to it, and then back to what they were doing. I realize it's just software. Software that Apple so far is refusing to provide. That's the whole point.

My point is that the device is not at fault for its lack of multitasking. That can always be added - and like you, I'd like to see it too. I think OS 4.0 will do something there. This runs 3.2 at the moment but probably not for long.

I live in Europe and Palm phones are a rarity here. Nokia is what everyone has, many iPhones and now finally Android is gaining popularity. So multitasking on a phone is not that common.

What I've learned from this thread:

If you're not drooling at the perfection of Apple's latest product you're a hater or a whiner.

He/she meant to say that a netbook is more useful than this POC. I agree!

May I suggest a productive computer - a white Macbook? (thus avoiding adding to the netbook landfill problem in 18 months)

He/she meant to say that a netbook is more useful than this POC. I agree!

I think people will be trying to find a reason to buy this, but it won't be based on any real need.

The lack of a e-ink type thing is the most disappointing thing for me. It might have had a real use otherwise. I think the kindle could even still sell well if it drops in price now its obvious that kindle is a real e-reader for books.

I think the simplicity of a large iphone OS is perfect. Less crap, and more doing what it is that you want to. Really what is that you do on Windows 7 netbooks that you won't be able to do on this eventually? (or lets limit this question to 95% of people who would use a netbook).

I do think however that this sort of thing could replace computers for a lot of people (when you consider what most people do on computers) (and Im talking about a external monitor keyboard setup as well).

Please tell me Apple is using some kind of unbreakable (or close to it) glass on this thing, because the day my wife punts an iPad across the hardwood floor, I'm going to cry like a schoolgirl.

Loving it...

This device is just what I was expecting and it looks great.

This is obviously not meant for everyone. (What I don't get: if you really want an OS X tablet, why not buy a Modbook and be happy? They look cool enough.)

This device is meant for content consumption and some e-mail - it's finally a 'computer for the rest of us' that takes away all the cumbersome stuff and just lets people get on with what they want to do. For several of my friends and family, this is all they need.

Let-downs so far:
- Lack of a front-facing camera for Skype/iChat. That would have made it irresistible for my parents to chat with their grandchildren.
- Dependency on iTunes. The device will still need a computer to interface with and Apple needs to get rid of that. Put OS updates in the cloud or something.

As for me, this will replace the Samsung NC10 that is always on the couch for a quick browse, shooting a quick e-mail or looking at photos. Now all we need is the Eye-fi app so that the iPad can get photos wirelessly from the camera.

Just imagine what all the app developers will be able to do with that huge screen! TV Guides, city guides and all that. Finally usable.

Looking forward to this!

NO YOU CANT. It does not support 1700MHz GSM (TMobile) or CDMA (Verizon) for example. The UNLOCKED comment was really in reference to International customers.

You can't blame Apple because TMobile and Verizon don't use the same cellular system as most of the rest of the globe!

Maybe I'm wrong, but to me this is not a netbook competitor.

What people should be comparing this to is the Kindle DX.

It (the Kindle DX) is almost $500 ($489) with a 9.7" screen and is basically a one-app device - that being an E-Reader (don't get me wrong it is a GREAT e-reader - I owned one but went back to the basic 6" model)

For almost the same money, we can now get the same size screen with an e-reader, web browser, calendar, all other kinds of apps... and a color TOUCH screen with WiFi-N.

When compared to the Kindle it is a great value.

Is it a netbook or a full multi-tasking macbook? No! And it doesn't need to be.

If you need that functionality... buy a macbook or an Air.

Me, I can't wait to get one to replace my Kindle, surf the web and play a few games...

One question is will the Kindle Reader app for iphone work on the iPad? I hope so.

Just my opinion.

WOW - I found a post that I finally agree with!! I could not have said it better myself . . . Compare a kindle to the iPad and hands down a superior device. The impression that I received from the video is that Apple is targeting the kindle buyer not someone looking for a new laptop.

I am blown away by the number of posts about people complaining that there is not cam . . . Really??

I love the iPad and I can't wait to get my hands on one.

My wish list for iPad 2:

- The ability to program for it, on it, with Apple's standard developer tools. If I need a separate computer to make programs for it, then it's not a real computer itself.

- Java runtime. If I ran Java just fine on a 200 Mhz Intel Pentium, and a 333 MHz G3, I'm sure their 1 GHz A4 can run it.

- Multitasking. Same argument as above. Their tech specs don't mention the included RAM, so maybe that's too low to multitask?

- Skype video chat. But at the very least skype audio chat. And preferably some way of being able to see someone else's desktop, like with VNC or whatever.

- Arbitrary file management. I might get whatever random binary file from someone, via scp or email, make copies of it, run whatever app to use it, and send it back out.

What I've learned from this thread:

That's about the size of it. Most people are mature enough to accept a difference of opinion is part of any debate, but some aren't.

Let's see you multitask on a Nokia. Those friends probably have iPhones and even then... multitasking can be added as it's software.

N900? Not a problem at all... in fact, all the Nokia "Internet Tablets" have always been able to multitask, from the N770 to the N800 to the N810.

It runs Linux, yanno.

Ok, a derivative of it but, even so...

Hell, my Dell Axim multitasks without issues.

"The most technologically advanced product" - they really need to stop saying that stuff...

I am little puzzled at to the target market for this device.

The iPad is not aimed at artist or developers because of the lack of CPU power and the lack of stylus pen.

The iPad is not aimed at business users on the go because the device is not mobile enough and we already have the iPhone to cover this aspect.

The iPad seems to be aimed at users who uses their PC lightly, (E-mail, surf the internet) like mothers and grandparents.

Perhaps the iPad aimed at students for note taking in class.

It's aimed at the same market as the original iMac. That's a great thing.

Netbook killer?

Absolutely.

I don't see this as a competitor to netbooks. Netbooks run a full version of Windows, not a limited iPhone OS. They are also fairly inexpensive. I see this as being a big iPod Touch with 3G data capability. The problem is you still need to own a phone (I suppose you could downgrade to a dumb phone if you own this with 3G data) and you still need to own a notebook computer.

This device will sell, but I don't see it flying off the shelves like the iPod Touch or iPhone. It's too big to carry in your pocket, yet a small laptop like a white Macbook will do so much more for not much more money.

Do you need to own all 3 devices? Time will tell. The people that have the money will own one. The people that have to cut expenses probably won't.

Ibook reader people keep mentioning. Well you will hurt your eyes reading a book on this. its not like the kindle with the ink technology. I guarantee you when the reviews come out this will be the biggest complaint.

If you don't know what you're talking about, it is better to say nothing.
