Ibook reader people keep mentioning. Well you will hurt your eyes reading a book on this. its not like the kindle with the ink technology. I guarantee you when the reviews come out this will be the biggest complaint.

I use a laptop screen for about 12-14 hours a day in total and my eyes don't hurt. This won't be any different

Yea, get a look at the tiny Micro SIMs:

%27SIM-Mini-UICC%27-1_03138_01.jpg

i just pulled my list of requirements from a post on Jan 13th.

10 inch screen
great battery life
wifi
3G
GPS
silly compass
accelerometer
webcam
iphone OSX (modified)
all iPhone apps (modified)
iwork (modified)
apple mail program
iphoto
some photo editor
some ebook reader
safari
keychain
sync to my mobileme
speakers
microphone
video out
sd card reader
more than 30GB
no real phone capabilities
$600 with $30 data plan through ATT
.

so I'm missing only:
SD card reader
Webcam
don't know about keychain yet
and its 25% more expensive than I wanted.

I get beyond my list:
an ugly Becel

well, three month to think about it. I'm surprised how close the price is to what I hoped.

well, since there is a ipad camera kit for SD cards and a USB connector for cameras there is hope that SD card readers become available for data as well.

More powerful? Isn't that one a centrino? How much ram? And what kind of battery life do you get? Would you really want to benchmark it against the iPad for web browsing?

Careful there, you could make a fairly stupid error in thinking "centrino" is a processor; it's a platform. This machine has a Pentium M at 1.7 GHz which is quite damned powerful, actually. 1.25GB of RAM since I don't much more, 320GB of storage space.

And yes, I'd put this up against the iPad for browsing any day and twice on a Sunday. Safari, or more accurately Mobile Safari has nothing on Firefox and the vast array of addons/extensions I can use.

As for battery life, well... this is a real computer and it's 7+ years old. When this tablet came out years past, it was considered to be revolutionary whereas the iPad is just similar technology that has evolved hence it is evolutionary. Not the same thing by a longshot.

And before you speak up and tell me I shouldn't be comparing a full blown desktop-class browser with a mobile one, I go back to my original point:

One is a narrow profile device - the iPad - and this is a full blown actual computer with all the various and expected accoutrements.

You can't compare them, and I just proved it.

Seeing as I just bought a house, I don't think I will be picking one of these anytime soon. But, if I was, I might be reconsidering because:

No camera for Skype/iChat. I'm REALLY surprised! What are we talking here, $10 in parts?

If it had a camera, I think it will be a big seller. It's still a nice device, but how can you sit on the couch and talk to someone on Skype and be like, "Hold on a sec...I have to go to my MB to see you."

Also, any idea about M$ releasing a Word App? That would really be the missing piece for many people.

I'll wait for V.2.0.

He/she meant to say that a netbook is more useful than this POC. I agree!

He/She say next you are they? in that case between the two of you can you out of genuine curiosity explain to me what it is that your going to do on your underpowered Netbook over and above the things you might use the iPad for ?

(Apart from running Flash of course - I'm accepting that as a given in any critical scenario)

And can you confirm that the compromises made in quality, performance and the hassles and overhead of maintaining a computer OS ( like windows) with AV and spyware software outweighs whatever negatives you perceive this iPad to have?

Really, I want to know..

I've got click-to-flash, and apart from 3 sites, I never click. So yeah, keep Flash away from the iProducts.

THANKS for that! I didn't know ClickToFlash and it's wonderful!! Thanks for saving the battery and heat on my MBA! :)

Right.

What, other than video (a problem that is really already solved) and games (hello 140,000 apps), are your problem?

I work in the web industry, so I would love to know what, other than those two things, dominate your web browsing experience on a day to day basis. Because most of what I see is HTML and ajax.

Really? You must operate on a closed LAN and spend a lot of time looking at code if you think that the only content on the internet in Flash is video and games.

Try every single news outlet on the internet, advertising, media broadcast giants, anything with interactive graphics ...

The list is endless.

Try looking at HBO.com. They just spent millions redesigning their entire site to run on Flash.

Try ESPN.

Try Disney.

Try looking at the internet.

One last nasty post tonight then I have to get back to work
- Flash. It's important. Even if an HTML5.X spec makes it redundant as a web-based API, Flash is much more useful than people realise. I prayed for PDF to go away 10 years ago, and it's still here- proof that it has value, even despite it's shortcomings
- Jonny Ive. I respect him, even if I dissed his iPod V1.0, but he's now gone from quietly designing SUI and Physical product to proselytizing the iPad??? Stick to your knitting Mr Ive.
- Speaking of ipod v. 1.0. This is what we have here folks, the ipad is iPad V1.0. A BETA product in fact. wait 5 years it will be what we were praying it would be in 2010. Just as iPod touch 2009 is the plateau in that category.
- Apple seems not to learn too much from it's mistakes. Check out what I wrote about the MacBook Air. The point is, for every 5 hits, they deliver a miss. This is a miss. Premature and hardly anything Kindle should worry about. Indeed, I'll wager $1,000 that Kindle will drop in price by 25% by April ;) That will make the iPad, instantly overpriced by comparison
OK.
That's it for me.

The iPad is very much like the original iPod.

It didn't do a whole lot at first, but after only a few years it grew and grew into an amazing product.

That's how Apple works. Start simple and build and build at a steady pace. This is how you don't end up with a bunch of features no one needs or wants which only complicate the device.

This is the same way. The iPad is ok. The iPad 3.0 will be a must-have item.

I have to agree, this is just the beginning, I also think you all have to let go of pre-conceived notions. This is an amazing device, it' not meant to replace the desk top, the lap top or the Iphone, though one day ot may replace these, at least partially, it is a new experience in portabillity and useabillity for the masses.

I use computers predominantly for the odd letter, email, web surfing, music and audio books, this does everything I need except video chat (which I am sure is not far away). You hi tech junkies are still going to need your power machines to do the hard core stuff, but I would rather take this on the go, than any other device out there.... :)

Of course they save files on the iPhone! But it's a very very limited filesystem, and will not replace the capabilities or versatility of a netbook, unlike what Steve believes

I'm not sure what you mean by this. What "versatility" is so critical in the "filesystem" (do you mean NTFS? Ext4?) of netbooks that is not available, especially now that we know (a real "duh", for a device with office apps) that it will have an exposed filesystem slice that also mounts on your desktop/laptop?

You're talking ****, face it.

I don't get it. [snip] It's already been said, and I apologize for beating a dead horse, but it's an oversized iPod touch. And to not only continue, but to extend an exclusive contract with AT&T? Who does that help?

If you start reading and stop complaining for a minute - the 3G device is UNLOCKED. There is NO EXCLUSIVITY for AT&T. They are just offering a DEAL. Which you can TAKE OR LEAVE. Is it really that hard to process information?

And yes, it is a big iPod Touch, but with 3G and a GPS if you want it. Skype calls and VOIP are probably going to be possible.

Look at the apps on your iPhone. Can you imagine what great things can be done with that screen and that CPU? I can.

I am not aware of any serious scientific research that has proven negative health effects for these kinds of radiation, though. Anecdotal "evidence" is practically worthless in this case and while taking certain precautions is certainly never a bad idea, needlessly scaring people and hampering innovation is dangerous as well.

I'd be interested in being proven wrong here, though. What scientific research does the German government use to justify their warnings against common radiation due to cordless phones etc. ?

Well, after the German government issued the warning regarding cordless phone use a few years ago, a flood of new "low-radiation" models came onto the market here. I would hardly call this "hampering innovation", but rather the opposite.

I don't know what scientific research they used (and - as it's past midnight - I'm on my way to bed so I'm not going to go to the gov. Web site at the moment to read the details), but if you can read German, it's all online. The German government - like other European governments - does not just arbitrarily issue warnings to scare its citizens (no, this is not the 1930's!), but bases such warnings on either evidence or strong likelihood of of potential harm. The warning did not read: "Stop using cordless phones altogether," but rather something like, "Exercise extra caution with them, always keep them docked when not in use and never sleep with them next to your head, etc." (if I remember correctly).

I hope this helps - again, I am not an anti-wireless fanatic (I even have have a cordless phone, although a "low-radiation" one and I always keep it docked when not in use), but I am mentioning all of this because I think most American readers are not aware of the potential risks. Basic principle: better safe than sorry! Enjoy the benefits and wonderful conveniences of wireless, but exercise common sense (e.g. avoid prolonged contact with sensitive "organic" areas of the body, etc.). We still have a lot to learn on this subject.

OK - now it's really time for me to go to bed! ;)

This is a miss. Premature and hardly anything Kindle should worry about. Indeed, I'll wager $1,000 that Kindle will drop in price by 25% by April ;) That will make the iPad, instantly overpriced by comparison
OK.
That's it for me.

Show me that full color kindle that can do everything the iPad can do for $499.

I'll wait...

Yeah, the Viliv, which comes with WinXP but Win7 can be added to it. It is just a tiny Windows computer.

http://www.amazon.com/Viliv-Promoti...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264627977&sr=8-1

Thanks for that, finally something that's in the same ballpark.

The Viliv is $100 more, same 16 gigs of storage, smaller screen at lower resolution, a little over half the battery life. Webcam but no 3g option. No way to compare speed other than web benchmarking both. For me the only advantage would probably be the webcam - other than that, the iPad seems pretty competitive.

No wireless.

No wireless what?

No - part of the beauty of the iPod Touch is that it can be stored in one's pocket. As many in this forum have already mentioned, the size of this device may be it's bane. If people really want this technology, they will likely opt for an iPod touch. If they want to carry around something this size, they will likely want something more powerful, like a laptop.

Call me crazy, but I've loved the touch and lusted for one...but thought it was probably too small for me to use much. There are varying degrees of portability - some people are perfectly happy carrying something the size of a magazine if it means quadruple the screen size.

But it has multitasking and LED? Don't you guys read?

Engadget confirmed no multitasking, what makes you think it has it?
