Reguardless of how you feel about the Exposure Notification system it still seems to go over everyone's heads that this iOS release does nothing without an accompanying app. At least in the US there has been no info on what that app would look like or when it would be available. Good on Apple for developing the APIs, but APIs don't do anything in and of themselves.

Is everyone else getting “Not available in your region” when trying to activate exposure tracking? I’m in the US.

This isn't something you'll enable in settings. You'll enable it when prompted within whatever app utilizes the API. You'd be going to that section in Settings to disable or Opt Out after the fact.

There is no app available for exposure tracking in the US yet. The API in and of itself doesn't do anything without the application that needs to be developed by the appropriate health authority.

Got it. Thanks. Hopefully apps start showing up soon.

FWIW I've got a stereo pair and another in my office, all three updated just fine and seem to be more responsive as far as how touchy the tops are.. I tend to always look out when placing something next to my HomePod in my office so I don't trigger some random song I didn't want to play really loud while I'm on a work call or something. It's still early, though.

I'm pretty sure that it'll be ONE app per country, possibly per state. Something like this is pretty high level and I'm sure they want something official and something that's been vetted to some degree.

because they recently released an update that bricked every single device.

And for anyone that has any issues this go around, here's a link that'll help you out:

Why would you stop it?!?
The HomePod is so damn buggy that any update is a good update.
A few updates ago an update caused home pods to have to be sent away for repair as they became non responsive

That didn’t work with that update

How could this update make my life worse than the Pandemic. Diving into the update head first! Frankly, I like the tracking tech for the virus. But it of course is only as good as the number of people that opt in.

For anyone else, upon install I was no longer able to grant permissions to applications for camera, bluetooth, etc. access. Everything is back to normal after a restart.

Anyone know if you should slap on your Magic Keyboard for the iPadPro while you update? Or is the MK just dead to software/firmware updates? Well, here goes nothing ;)

If this were in place, and widely accepted by the population, back in, say, January, it would have had a chance to make a difference. Now? Too late.

I missed the happy news that COVID-19 has been completely and permanently eradicated from the planet. Thanks for letting us know.

I'll be fine with this API...as long as it is removed by Apple when the situation deems it no longer necessary. Allowing it in the first place is a slippery slope. Think of how many governments would love to see it "repurposed" once this situation settles. My governor is probably drooling thinking of the possibilities. There's rumors that he wants his emergency powers to include criminal charges for anyone who badmouths him on social media. (I have my doubts about that being true...but at the same time, he's on quite the power trip right now and it sure sounds like something he'd say)! Keeping that in mind...I'm sure he'd love to see this API be "repurposed" for quite a few things other than COVID.

....or you could just delete the apps that use the API when you feel you no longer need them. The API does nothing by itself.

Where can we find apps that utilize the contact tracing API? Will Apple be promoting them on a specific page?

I know this is way out of left field, but..... the App Store?

I installed them on my iPad and iPhone. Seems to have broken iPhone (iOS 13.5 - all latest updates) <-> iMac (macOS 10.15.4 - all latest updates) synching (not sure about iPad, I haven't tried yet). I'm sure it'll be resolved in the upcoming macOS release.

Update: seems to be working now. Not sure what changed.

I think they're more likely to pile up until the initial waves are over, then they will decline. Herd immunity is going to do more to prevent this in 2020 than a vaccine which doesn't exist yet. There's only so much we can control here.
Herd immunity isn’t a 2020 thing. And we can control a lot, especially the spread in nursing homes and other elder care facilities.

Yeah, I am going to wait and hold off on updating.

Who wants to go first? :p
You replied first so I'd say you should be the first ;) .

Curious why this could not have been an app rather than embedded in an OS update? I am not an app developer, but it seems like it could have been an app that would be easier to uninstall when this is over.
I agree, this should have been an app
