podcast home page is jerking me around

Can anyone with a bunch of podcasts on their phone that has installed 3.1.2 scroll through through the list of their podcasts and tell me if the scrolling is smooth or not? In both 3.1 and now in 3.1.2 both my main list of videos and podcasts scroll very sluggishly. I currently have 21 different podcasts on the phone and when you scroll through that list it is very jerky. But what is weird is that if I go into one of my podcasts (like say GeekBrief.TV that I currently have 51 episodes of) the list scrolls as smooth as silk as it should.

Nope, 3.1.2 does NOT fix the jerky podcast scrolling issue. I was really hoping it would.

Hmmm....

I updated and have no podcast scrolling issues. I am on a iPhone 3g.

This has been an issue with my 3GS for quite a while, and it's just annoying when the user interface works so well on almost every other aspect of my favorite and greatest tech product ever made! I have been wondering about why scrolling is jerky when searching on the iPod home podcast screen, and after installing the 3.2 update, mine did not fix this issue. At first I wondered if it was a memory issue--having too many pod/vodcasts to keep up with, but that does not seem to be the case either--I have plenty of empty space (7+ gig).

Anyone else having this problem? Fortunately it's very low on the scale of important issues with all things iPhone.

Actually for all of MS' faults, and there are many, testing releases is one of their strengths...after the Vista fiasco. That is why Win 7 is so stable: they tested the crap out of it with millions of users from around the world.
To whatever degree W7 is stable will be because it's really Vista 6.1 (don't take my word on this, check the system DLL versions for yourself). The acid test will be after the actual release. Until then, I wouldn't be so confident to simply declare victory and go home. The very nature of a zero day vulnerability is to wait until a critical mass of real-world (non-techie) users is reached. That has always been Microsoft's Achilles heel. Likewise, because Windows has to support so many permutations of hardware and software, we won't really know the general stability just from user testing. Maybe post back after the first of the year?

I dont know what made me snap and install this over 3.0.1, but i kind of wish i didnt now.

I'm not really having any problems, but its just doesnt feel as nice and smooth as 3.0.1 did. screen transitions, swiping, scrolling. its a bit choppy sometimes, and it almost NEVER was on 3.01. it might not seem like a big deal, but its the iphone experience to me.

If there was some way to go back to 3.01 on my 3GS, i really think i would do it.

ps. i did a fully clean install, i dont mind loading my contacts and bookmarks etc back on.

The reason why the kernel is version 6.1 instead of 7.0 is to avoid massive incompatibility problems if a program checks to see what version OS you're running. Seeing 6.x won't flag programs the way 7.x would.

Ever since 3.1 i cant connect to Hotspot Shield using my iphone i get an error message..

This is starting to piss me off since i cant use pandora because im in canada and i gotta get on an APN first.

This updates sucks just as much as 3.1. I finally got 3.1 working well after 20 restores and for some dumb reason I upgraded. Wouldn't you know, that after updating, it says it can't read the data on my iPhone and I have to restore. The last solid update was 3.0.1. The past two have been disgustingly bad.

Apple has been doing nothing but pushing out bad updates for the past couple of months.

I see they didn't fix the problem I get quite often - when you get an incoming call and slide to answer refuses to go more than a quarter of the way across the screen and jumps back to the beginning several times

So I needed to reset 3.0.1 and decided to try 3.1.2 for the heck of it. It is good and all but why does my mail look like this? I have installed it fresh twice now and am very confused. Anyone else with this problem?

Got worse

I can't believe apple's dishing out such garbage for the last two updates. So much for the A+ apple software/hardware.
The battery can't hold on for a day now. The network coverage was as it is bad with AT&T's issues and now Apple has a few of it's own. BTW, they say it fixes intermittent issues with the network coverage. I had that before this latest update...and have even MORE of that now.
I feel like trashing this phone. It's unbelievable that in this day and age, we still can't get a decent network coverage.

agree

however i do not believe it can be fixed with software/firmware upgrades. i have written about this a few times. i am convinced it is the radio that is used in the iPhone and until they change that it will not get much better.

before the iPhone and a baby ;) i used to really be into cell phones and would always get everything that came out that looked cool and then hack them up as much as possible to do everything i wanted including flashing them with hacked firmwares etc... and i did this for many years.

one thing that was clear with all these phones i had is that reception could vary from one to another while not moving locations. after a lot of reading and trial and error i found that taking coverage out of the picture it is related to mainly the radio (manufacturer/model) the phone had and sometimes it would be the design as well. i had a few that had the same radio's but their design and antenna placement in the phone caused them to be better or worse.

i travel for work and have tested the iPhone a lot with various ATT smart and dumb phones and i have yet to find one with worse reception than the iPhone. i can be on back roads in Ohio or Michigan for example and have NO SERVICE on the iPhone and then stop my car and swap the sim card into my Motorola Q and have 2 bars. i have done this so many times and the iPhone loses every time to whatever other phone i happen to have with me.

i have also tested my amount of dropped calls within my home area by using the iPhone for a couple of days and counting dropped calls and then doing the same thing with several other phones. the iPhone loses every time at this test and in fact i have not really had any dropped calls with my other phones.

there is a place on the highway on my way to/from work that i let people know i may drop this call because 50% of the time i drop in this area. however with any other phone i have i never drop there.

my wife used a windows smartphone (pantech duo) for the last 3 years on ATT and i often ask her if she has dropped any calls and she told me it happened ONCE to her that she can remember and we are in the same area.

i drop more calls with the iPhone every month then i did with Verizon in 5 years.

i say "with the iPhone" above because it is not an AT&T issue since i can not duplicate these dropped calls on any other AT&T phone regardless of whether it is a smart or dumb phone.

i am not giving up the iPhone although i have considered it many times because i use Macs and love mobile me and it is mainly these features that keeps me putting up with the AWFUL reception of this phone.

it will not get better until Apple makes it better and there is nothing AT&T can do about it in areas that already have proper coverage.

i wanted to add to this that my dropped calls have been consistent from my 2G, 3G, and now 3GS.

before the iphone my wife had 3 phones from verizon over the last 6-7 years. one of them had crappy reception. it was the middle phone. i think it was an LG, but don't remember. almost everywhere it would get 2-3 bars at most. last VZ phone she had was a samsung and in the same places it would get 5 bars and great reception

Audio dropping in/out after upgrade

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing temporary loss of audio on calls (both on speakerphone and handset mode) after upgrading. I am, and I don't believe it's a connection issue. The call does not get dropped, and I have full signal strength. I am using a 32GB white iPhone. Thanks.

GPS crashed

Tell you what. Spent a week on internet searching for magic tricks in order to bring GPS reception back to my iPhone 3G and read loads of comments that people had troubles with 3.1 update but my situation was totally different. No single crash on 3.1 update, no lags or glitches, didn't need to reboot a single time, battery was holding fine, not magic, but fine.

Then 3.1.2 update came by and as I didn't know what's going on in the world, my phone got updated. Next morning took iPhone off the charger at 06:30 and by 20:30 it died. Now a bit about the settings. Wi-Fi is off, 3G is off, no push or fetch, no apps running, made 2 calls and around 19:00 played a game on it for about 15 mins. It Died. Next day tried to connect to wi-fi at work - no reception. Had to go to the com room to get reception at about 3 m from its door.

Last bit was my GPS receiver. I have CoPilot Live installed and it worked for me fine for the last 2 - 3 months but since last update it was searching for signal and never found one. Google maps gave only approximate location which was way off and GPS Easy or Motion X Sport Lite were unable locate me.
I had to restore to original settings like 3 times and go to the fields with 3G off but finally Google maps gave me pulsing blue dot with correct location.

2 days later GPS receiver died again and i restored my phone around 10 times and tried all possible tricks in a book but gave up and rung Apple support. They got me to purchase Apple Care and next day I received a temporary replacement and sent my phone to Apple. Replacement works like magic. Signal clear and interface responsive but battery yet to be tested.

Question is can I keep it? :D You see I believe they just going to wipe the dust and send my handset back to me but I already feel attached to the replacement. It is shiny and slippery and screen looks brighter  O, o, o and it has 3.0.1 upgrade!!! 3.0.1 downgrade??? Sorry, got all confused...
iTunes asked me to update to the latest version in order to sync all my data but when I clicked next it synced al my contacts and apps with no trouble and I just unplugged at the end.

So, can I keep it??? Seriously, can I??? :D

To recap: 3.1.2 killed my battery, wi-fi and GPS receiver (please don't even try to ask me if I ever dropped it on the kitchen tiles because I did not).

When was VPN broken with 3g. Are you talking about not working with Cisco VPN's ? Mine works fine. Every day.

He's most likely talking about VPN-ing over 3G on the iPhone firmware 3.1.2, because I can remote in to my computer fine while on Wifi, but not over 3G.

3.0.1 was the last time I remember VPN over 3G worked, so i'll most likely downgrade to that on my 3G.

I had the opposite experience. I had lousy battery life with 3.1.1, but with 3.1.2 battery life is vastly improved. I also have MotionX an Copilot and have no problem with either one in getting a GPS fix. Same goes with the traffic app Inrix. You may have a hardware issue that needs looking into.

There's no such thing as iPhone firmware 3.1.1

That's odd, mine shipped with 3.1.1 Firmware/update (on 3Gs 16GB Black straight from Apple store).

Oh. I guess they must have released a 3.1.1 for the 3GS only, but I don't recall hearing about 3.1.1 on the iPhone... Only 3.1.1 for iPod touch 3G

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_OS_version_history <-- I don't see an iPhone version 3.1.1 on this site.

Hmm… I don't see it here either: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

I just did some more research and there was never a 3.1.1 version for the iPhone. Version 3.1 came out at the same time the 3rd gen iPod touch came out (running 3.1.1), but the iPhone only went up to 3.1 and then jumped directly to 3.1.2.

So, boom… you're wrong.
