Couldn't agree with you more.

Actually for all of MS' faults, and there are many, testing releases is one of their strengths...after the Vista fiasco. That is why Win 7 is so stable: they tested the crap out of it with millions of users from around the world.

Apple needs to broaden its beta program to get input from a MUCH broader audience to eliminate the BS we've seen with iphone OS ver. x, y and z.

Actually this is the first time that MS has done testing of an OS to this extent, yes they usually get a limited number of beta testers, but I don't ever remember them publicly releasing a beta of any of the other operating systems.

I do agree though that Apple needs better beta testing, I hadn't even heard that they were working on 3.1.2 before it was released.

Yes. There is also a carrier update. It will be AT&T 5.6

Does anyone suspect that the carrier update addresses AT&T's announcement to allow voip over 3G. Guess I'll have to down the update and try Skype over 3G to see if it works now.

Am I the only person who thinks this update might (most importantly) enable VOIP apps to now work over AT&T 3G??? In other words, now we should see an updated Skype app that works on 3G.

That's what I am thinking. I am going to try it once I download on 3gs. (I downloaded to 2g first to see what it did - but I have no sim card in that phone). I'm not sure Skype needs to update for that, do you?

I think you missed the part of the apps name called Memo. I'm not trying to defend Apples programming but let's face it Voice Memo satisfies most peoples need to record a Memo. Anyhow have you filled a bug report?

Dave

There isnt a limit. The limit is based upon how much free space is available. Refer to my screenie......

carrier file

I don't think this carrier file is THE carrier file that will enable 3g data use for voip and other applications. Timing would be very tight if it were to be.

Apple is sure on a power trip with these updates. They don't want anyone to keep their jailbreak iPhone.
iPhone users should connect their iPhones to iTunes and click the "Check for Update" button to obtain the new version. PFFFT NO THANKS, I'll wait for another jailbreak update like always.

APPLE you can't win this, trust me it's been proven that you can't make us from not using a jailbreak iPhone. With you're crappy pre-updates, you keep putting bugs in them purposely trying to trick us from having a jailbreak iPhone.

TO conclude this babbling issue, having a jailbreak iPhone makes every possible use out of the phone. NO QUESTIONS ASKED.

Has Steve forgotten his own roots in phone phreaking?

Well it doesn't work with Skype, so it is either not "the" carrier file, or Skype has to do an update to take advantage of the new possibility. Getting Skype to update doesn't seem likely. Can't even get them to add push notifications.

Because only a very very small percentage of iphone users care about wireless syncing.

If that's true (which I'm not sure it is), that's because they don't know what it is. This feature would be suh-weet. Second only to the ability to have separate mail signatures for separate accounts.

exactly - good point - big updates like this could not be trusted to work well over wireless connection.

funny how with every update people post to say that they are clinging on to older versions and implying that only fools would continue to upgrade to the most recent one...

Easy enough. Don't permit firmware updates over wireless. Problem solved. Not really a legit reason.

- Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart...

And here I thought living on the edge of 3G range was causing my loss of network. The update helps, I still go "searching", though less and shorter duration than in the past.

Now if Apple would offer a silent period setting so the phone wouldn't vibrate or do audible alerts during certain times. I don't care to hear that an email came in from a spammer at 1AM.

I agree; that is probably what he means!

However, I don't know how useful this is but it wouldn't hurt to implement it.

Bingo, that's exactly what this guy wants ;) It's extremely useful to me if I start playing a game or something (like my favorite Cube Runner) and then want to start playing music while I'm in the game. I used to just be able to double-click and start it up.

Now it closes me out of my game and helpfully takes me to the homescreen (or, as some have mentioned, directly into the iPod feature which is just as unhelpful). Now I've just lost my game.

Insert your own scenario here, but I think you see what I mean.

There's an easy workaround for that.

From within your game, lock the screen. Then double tap the home button to bring up the iPod controls on the lock screen. Then play your track.

Hope this was helpful.

Good point, thanks. Still not really what I'd expect from Apple* in terms of ease-of-use and design but better than quit-and-reenter.

*Wait, this is exactly what I expect from Apple.

I would call 3.1.2 a really important update. I tested it intensive for almost two days now.

"Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart"

The OS update came 2 hours after (now this I call service ;)) my visit at the carrier's shop because of interrupt cellular network services. They just changed my SIM card (they are doing that automatic and always) and promised that the problem is protected by warranty (today I have my iPhone 3G for exactly one year).

Since the update no more "No cellular network" messages!

"Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming"

I had some crashes to homescreen when I touched the player controls at apps like YouTube or EyeTV for iPhone. Gone since the update to 3.1.2!

Additionally it seems that battery load lasts a bit longer. The update process was the fastest since I have my iPhone.

Okay – Big smile :)

I use 7 every day. It's still not nearly as stable as OS X, especially when stressed. WinXP has to die, and Win7 is an improvement, but it's still astonishing how much MS got wrong.
