Slow 3G browsing is probably not to do with your phone, more likely your location. My 3G is fast enough that I turn wifi off....

On the 3GS it's fine, but an old 3G phone the processor is too slow to load web pages...a few guys I work with have the 3GS and it blows my 3G away on the same wifi network when it comes to page loading times.

im guna be one of those guys who joins the program just to upgrade my 3gs its just to tempting, both my friends have android phones so now i can say my phone is just as good or better:D:D:D:D:D

haha! your not the only one who wants to do this right now! Im so temped! :)

No multitasking for 3G iPhones??? WTF lol, well that should piss off plenty of people!!

iAds...no thx, this type of update is just adds to the decision to move to a different phone. At least my 3GS will be worth a lot on Craigslist with all the 3G people hosed.

Really? Really? Apple releases a new features on your phone and you want to sell it? Hmmmm maybe Windows 7 Phone will have multitasking and "copy & paste" ... oh wait....

lol

Those of you installing the beta don't expect any multitasking for 3rd party apps, they require the use of apis and thus need to be updated. Likely months before that happens.

I'm nervous to install the new 4.0 OS beta.

  1. It can be buggy as hell. The 2.0 and 3.0 beta firmwares were a nightmare to deal with.
  2. There may be no way to downgrade the OS. I'm hoping that Erica Sadun at TUAW could provide some insight.
  3. Genius Bar may not be able to take it in for warranty exchange or repair. I sure raised eyebrows when my device started to act up, and not because of the beta OS that was on it. Luckily, they took it back, but not without questioning first.
  4. It may not be able to be unlocked or jailbroken (at least for some time).
  5. If any of the first four go into effect, you may not be able to resell it until the 4.0 final is released - especially if a new iPhone model comes out before then.

I'm actually more concerned about #1. We're at least two months away from the "Summer" release of 4.0, so we'd be dealing with having to upgrade every couple of weeks to a new beta, regardless of whether or not it has issues.

Don't get me wrong, I like experimenting, but if they happen to announce the iPhone 3X or something next week and I can't bring this bad boy down to 3.1.3 again, I don't think I can get rid of it.

On a sidenote, the fact that the original and 3G versions are going to start to get shut out is going to kill their resale value. The 3GS, not so much, unless the new model comes out with a front-facing camera and some other wild feature we're not expecting (or have been expecting since day 1, LOL).

No cross compiling

John Gruber has a short article up regarding iPhone apps.

No cross compiling allowed by the developer license.

I'm 100% in agreement with this. Keeps the riff raff out and the quality up. There's enough problems already, and current developers will benefit.

Too bad Flash CS5. Nice knowing you.

Its not about being hosed, its about processor speed. anyone who bought the 8 gig for 99 bucks also should have read the difference in processor speeds. I am sure that they would have made it possible to include if it was useable.

Also the interesting part about the iAd is that you may see more apps that are subsidised by ads, and may end up being free, there isn't anything that indicates that Apple is going to inject ads but open up a way for developers to do it instead of the ad hoc way they are doing it now.

Most people upgrade their phones every 12 - 18 months anyways.

Oh and if anyone wants to change to Android, get ready for ads everywhere... remember it's powered by google....

I work in the industry... just wait till windows 7 comes out, if you want to see ads...lol

Anyone else notice how they seem to change the calculator icon every year? Seems like it's becoming some sort of inside tradition now....

HAHA, I was JUST about to post about that! What is this the 4th time? Seriously what is going on over there in Cupertino lol? :p

I think I like the current one best.

Translate this for us regular folk, if you don't mind. :)

Edit: Never mind. I found Gruber's article.

I suppose with some of them this is correct like Pandora who obviously had to do some tweaking to get it to work in the background. Might not be the case with all though..

i figured out that i spend all this money on lunch for school and if i just don't get the stuff i usually get i actually will have enough money to do it YES:D:D:D:D

And not a word on a common user data directory that would be easy to sync and share data between apps.

Guess we're still in the 'every app has to figure out how to sync data itself' stone age of apps.

Agreed! That is the single most significant upgrade I've been wanting to see too. The one thing that is lacking from letting the iPhone be a fully functional replacement for a laptop (or at least a NetBook). Seams like it should be trivial to implement.
Gotta admit a lot of this 4.0 stuff is nifty cool though, especially the multitasking.
Any word on iPhone OS 4.0 at least getting the iWork apps that are in ipad OS 3.2?

This is what I am waiting for also, it's a show stopper.

The rules for clearing up after yourself are pretty straight forward, you just need to be careful.

Sure, GC makes development easier.. but still, I would hardly call no GC a show stopper. I would rather that Apple take the time to include improve XCode first...

There's a "fine print" detail that won't make some iPhone 3GS and 3rd-gen iPod Touch owners happy.
Not all of the models (8GB and 16 GB) of these devices will be able to get multitasking features.
That's oficial information. Check the last paragraph.
