All the announcements were excellent (minus any mention of Lotus/Domino).

My only thought is... would it KILL them to release 1.1.5 with a few of their demo apps, like Touch Fighter and especially AIM? Just the stuff they would do for free anyway. Just to ease the "blow" of a 3 month wait.

Otherwise, today was a grand slam as far as I can tell.

My understanding is that you get the SDK free and you can write your own apps and use 'em on your iPhone.

No, I got the impression that if you want to load an app onto a phone you will need a "certificate" code and you get those for $99. So even to load your own software onto your own phone you'd need one. With just the free SDK you are limited to running only in the simulator.

It looks like the 2.0 firmware will only run signed apps. Maybe even encrytped apps. we don't know who they will implement this but I'll bet 2.0 will break the jail break methods i use now.

Ok I found the quote. Jobs said:
"...Go to our web site and download our SDK for free. Run the Simulator on your Mac. You can join the iPhone Developer Program if you want to run the app on an iPhone or iPod Touch..."

Anyone know if the developer has to buy his own app back? How does he/she get their own apps on their own iPhones? If they have to upload their app to apple and pay $99 or whatever, that sucks? Paying $99 for your own software?

While I don't like the delay, at least we have an idea how it's going. Sounds really, cool though. Kinda wish Apple was part of Google's Android think. Apple could add that coolness factor to it, plus a lot of the apps designed for Android will automatically work on the iPhone. But I know Apple will never do that, so no flaming, please.

Please don't blame Apple for this. Thank Sar-Ox accounting. But come on, you don't think it's worth 20 bucks for all these updates? Go find that baby bottle of yours.

Hey... we can't all get an iPhone...

I'm in canada... and until then... I have to be satisfied with a 32Gb iPod Touch i still didn't received  and I ALREADY know i'll have to pay again to get that update in 3-4 months... that sucks A LOT!

Being a student developer, I HOPE they let us download the SDK AND the firmware for free!

No iPhone 2.0 until LATE JUNE! I thought that they would release something for their customers today! This officially sucks!

Well...it wasn't what I expected. No sling media. No app store till June. Yea, they should of just waited until wwdc.

JUNE??? AHhhhhhhhhhh

June!?!?!?!

June?! Ughhhh

Too many whiners. OMG. Can you believe that. This is a huge release. They have done it right. And to get all the apps, devs, store and everything in place along with whatever else the 2.0 update is bringing is a lot. But no as usual Apple announces something, and something that they are making a huge investment in and committment to just to get to end users, and everyone complains that it isn't here already. This is what is wrong with the give it to me now already and I want it for free generation that doesn't know anything and is running this country into the ground. Sorry but deal. Little brats.

So do we have to wait until June for apps to start showing up?

P6

And no, I imagine apps will start showing up, be able to run on a Mac or get into the phone via jailbreak but still be written to take adv. of all the SDK stuff. Unless something in the software update is changing parts of the OS to deal with more subtle accelorometer movements, but I doubt it.

Quick question

Can an average Joe-Schmo download the SDK? I've been messing around with VBA for a long time so I've got at least some understanding of what to expect but I'm not on apple's dev list but I'd love to write (or at least learn) for the iPhone.

This is the attitude that other cell manufacturers took to the iPhone before it officially released, and now they're 6 months further behind the game than they could have been.

This changes a whole hell of a lot.

I wouldn't say they are 6 months behind anything, especially not the iPhone. Maybe Palm is, but the other phone makers still have the leg up on software and features until the SDK is official, and Apple and other devos actually make software for the iPhone.

And remember, not everyone is going to jump on the AT&T bandwagon over a glossy phone. Some users need more than just a cool device.

Go figure, whiners unite once again.

It's already been stated that the upgrade price was due to accounting, even if it wasn't, I wouldn't be complaining. They're offering it to you, with an older product. They aren't phasing out your iPod like they're done with the the other iPods.

I'd rather it come out in June, bug-free, with hundreds of apps ready. Sure it'd be nice to have it now, with all the features, but big deal, hold your turds in your pants and wait till June. At least you have time get a job and pay 20 or so dollars for a software update.

All I can say is this blew me out of the water. I'd never expect Apple to jump onboard with games and everything else.

But they only have to pay if they want to publish it. They can download it for free, write some great apps for free, and if they really are great apps.... they can't get 99 people to buy it for $1.30? Cause if they can, there's the $99 fee.

$99 is negligible in this scenario.

If anything the $99 is just a fee to prevent people from publishing crap to the iTunes store. If you could freely download, write an app and publish it, everyone with a Hello World app would be trying to push their apps to iTunes. $99 ensures the person is serious enough to do so.

arn

I agree, i knew that the 99 dollars was going to pis off people. It is a good way of making sure garbage is not introduced into itunes .

OK Sally. I F%^%^%^KING bought one because I wanted one, duh. And, I like it quite a bit regardless of the frequent let downs.

IF Apple and the developers actually follow through with real product, it will be great.

:D

Yeah!!!! Let's BURN Apple Inc!!!! Aaaaaaaaarghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

LMAO - settle down, it's just a phone. If you did not like it in the first place, then Why the F@@@@@@CK did you buy one?

I thought today was rather promising, especially considering apps like Touch Fighter which took two weeks to build.

??

Why? Why? You know this is going to be 4 more months of waiting. How disappointing is that. This means "official" 3rd party apps wont be in the hands of the people until 8 months after the official announcement. 8 months after what ideally would have been there on day 1. I'm still a huge believer that development on the iphone is going to rock my world but how hard is it going to be to wait.

The SDK is avaliable NOW! That gives developers 3 months to develop, debug and perfect their work. June is the time when iTunes/iPhone will get updated and you can actually start downloading programs.

I totally agree with Jobs now. It's simply impossible to fully satisfy customers. No matter what they do, there is always someone screaming and crying about how this an that sucks. THey freaking opened the SDK and gave iPhone business class connectivity and still no satisfaction. Grow up!

On the announcement today I would like to say that Apple have listened to the industry and covered perhaps every single hole that was missing/wrong with iPhone ( except the SIM lock )

With all the enterprise options, open SDK and secure wi-fi having been solved, I will buy an iPhone as soon as it gets Atom and 3G (howpfully wimax, too) this summer.

And Touch owners are getting screwed again since they will have to pay for the update!

That sucks.

ugh, give it up. it's in the accounting/reporting mandates from the govt. they have to charge something for major software updates. they do this for iphones on the $20/mo cut they get from at&t. read any of the thousands of previous posts on this . . .

Look, this SDK is already coming out late and the fact that it will be an entire 1/4 of a year before we see anything useful to us makes this not so good.

For crying out loud, what is it with Apple and premature announcements? .

Did you miss the part where Steve said "TODAY". You can get this TODAY.

Yes it is called "beta" but did you read the part where Jobs said "It is the same as what Apple developers use". You can have the same stuff that the Apple engineers are using and you can have it TODAY. Well that is if the server can handle all the downloads. I hear it is a bit overloaded currently. Did you see the demos they showed. You can have what they had (except for the Apple engineers that sat next to them) right now.

Spore??? No freaking way! If you had asked me what might be the coolest demo they might give, I would probably not have even thought of the possibility of putting Spore on it. After seeing videos of Will Wright demo it at the game developers conference and later at TED, well, having that be part of the iPhone SDK demo is a very nice touch!

I suppose that's two much anticipated products, in varying stages of lateness, in one demo.

I wonder how much of the game the put on the phone? I do remember Wright saying he got programmers from the old 'demo scene' to help write it, and that it was made to be really efficient, using a lot of fractals rather than a lot of data. But still, putting it on a phone must be quite the test.

I must see this spore-on-iphone game. I wasn't really at all interested games, but I would probably buy this one.

Wow! I can hardly wait... When you look at what some of those guys did in just a few days or a couple of weeks, in three months we're going to be spoilt, pampered and frolicking in scores of gorgeous apps.
