It is really almost 4 full months (today is only the 6th). March, April, May and June (end of). Overall very good news today - other than the long wait. Does anyone know what is required to get the beta?
You need to own a Mac for the sdk so about 600$

Will everyone who is whining about apps not being available TODAY give it a rest? IT WAS AN SDK ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY!!!!!

SDK first - apps later, not difficult to understand really

Or installer and have SDK-developed apps before everybody else. It remains to be seen if that's possible, but there's a good chance it is.

Great idea. I didn't think about that. Great way to also have developers test their Apps out before the big release.

You hear that developers? We're here to test for you.

Yeah, I'l be you're test-bitch. Not a problem.

Look, this SDK is already coming out late and the fact that it will be an entire 1/4 of a year before we see anything useful to us makes this not so good.

For crying out loud, what is it with Apple and premature announcements? This is getting ridiculous. It's going to get to the point where people stop paying attention. At least don't build it up like hey here are all these apps you've really been wanting, but oh - wait a minute - they're still vaporware! Jokes on you you stupid Apple fanboy! We don't actually have anything, we're just teasing you and you'll be both grateful and lucky to get squat in at least four months from now!

I'm tired of it. Dammit, this thing should already do instant messaging and exchange. I'm tired of not being able to send a damn picture, an instant message, or use this thing for anything of value besides making phone calls. I shouldn't be teased with a live announcement announcing the very things I have been waiting for only to be told at the end of it that they don't exist yet!

If that doesn't piss you off than I just don't understand. How can it not?

It's not about Apple is good or Apple is evil. It's about managing expectations and not alienating your customers. It wasn't that long ago that Microsoft had to bail Apple out. They ought not forget that. The arrogance is astounding.

Yeah!!!! Let's BURN Apple Inc!!!! Aaaaaaaaarghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

LMAO - settle down, it's just a phone. If you did not like it in the first place, then Why the F@@@@@@CK did you buy one?

Amen brother - great day!

I know people just like to complain.... but.

This was an amazing announcement/update. Few months delay, few dollars here and there means nothing.

The fact that Apple has demoed apps and functionality that essentially address EVERY complaint about the iPhone to date with respect to software.

This SDK does not appear to be limited. The terms are remarkably reasonable. The SDK is free. Download it, learn how to use it, write your own apps. If you want to be able to push an app to iTunes, it will cost you a very reasonable $99. I can't tell if people who are complaining are even actual developers or just think everything should be free on principle.

This iPhone announcement has suddenly positioned the iPhone/Touch to be a remarkable success.

So, Google releases the Android SDK and any hardware is, as of right now, vaporware and it's a hit!

Apple actually has a product that has already sold millions; the time from SDK to launch is only three months? This is actually a very short time. Yes, applications can be developed in a short period of time, but within three months many applications will be available, not just a few.

@whiny iPod Touch people. Apple is getting back-end revenue from ATT that continue to fund the project. If you buy a Motorola RZR, you will not get continued support, additional apps, firmware and OS updates. This is a great business model for Apple, ATT, and iPhone owners. Those outside of this process should not be shocked if asked to pay for software that they, themselves, are not funding the development of.

This seems like kind of a rush job by Apple. The future sounds great, but the present seems sloppy. They announced an SDK in October and it seems like they didn't focus on it til mid February. They should have had the SDK seeded to multiple developers already and they should have publicly released an app or two today. The future is promising, but the present is a letdown. Looks like it's time to jailbreak.

You all are not! Pay the few bucks they charge for a great update! The money will go to great use, since Apple is a great company. Will go into more research and development for better things down the road!

Hmm, not sure I just want to give money away to any company, no matter how great. Opinions seem to differ, even among respected economist types, whether this charge is really required. The practices of many other companies seem to suggest that even if it is required, its easy to get away with not charging if the company wants to. What pretty much everyone does seem to agree on though, is that if this is the reason for this charge, $0.99 would likely suffice - the rules for assessing the value are loose at best, if they even really exist, or if they even really apply. I don't mind paying for software updates, but I would like to know the company is being honest with me. So far, I'm not sure.........

MR: "The SDK will be available for free public download today. "
My understanding is that you get the SDK free and you can write your own apps and use 'em on your iPhone. But if you want to commercialize the app, you got to pay Apple $99 as licensing/publishing fee.
This is pretty much an industry norm (BREW for instance)

On the bad side, even if somebody wanted to submit a free app they want to share, they would have no choice but to pay $99 from their own pocket OR ask for a "nominal charge" on iTune apps store !
Right, well that's kind of what I meant. I personally can easily afford the $99, but I know some people who might want to write some great apps could have a problem with it and that's too bad.

Buy a Mini.

SDK is too complex for Apple to create a windows SDK environment also.

A mini will do you well.

Too much work for little benefit really when the development is totally different on windows, plus I'm sure this technology will make its way onto the mac at some point and Apple will have already have the developers in place in order to kick start the mac apps.

It means nothing. The apps do not exist. Until we actually have working applications in our hands, nothing has changed.

And who knows how much things change in four months. That's a long time.

June!?!?!?!

Didn't you read.. He said "today". and "free" You can download the SDK and get to work TODAY. OK the app store opens in June but you can run to simulator today. Do you really thing you are going to be able to read the docs and learn "touch" in just a few weeks.

Just download the SDK. Don't whine about "june" untill you've looked over the SDK and by then I'm betting it will already be June

Sounds gret to me. I don't mind waiting 'til June, since it gives a firm date (assuming they hold to it). I'm especially pleased that Apple is going to be OK with free apps working through iTunes. Seems seamless.

Edit: yay, I'm not a newbie any more!

It's FEDERAL LAW.

They think we are idiots. If it worked one, they do it again. They are back with the accounting charge crap for the iPod touch owners  ...

It's required by federal law. It's not some scam. Maybe you are an idiot.
