Are you sure about that? I updated my iTunes to 10.0.1, and quicktime controls over album artwork still work for me... If you aren't playing a song currently, it won't show up, but while playing a song, clicking the album art will allow you to control the music via quicktime controls over the album artwork

Well they did it. They managed to make iTunes even worse!
The Genius Sidebar is completely gone and replaced with an entirely useless feature that doesn't provide any of the same functionality.

That is so crap. Half my songs are Feat. X singer as more and more artists collaborate. I am sick of looking through my iPod and seeing the same artist listed 3, 4 or 5 times in a row because of the slightest difference.
If Google knows that a search for the words "Eminen, Rihanna and Love" is the same as "Eminem Feat Rihana Love the way you lie" should lead to the same thing I don't see why Apple can't sort this out.

This is getting complicated. I now have a stock 10.0.1 version of iTunes, a 10.0.1 version modified to have coloured icons and a 10.0.0 version with coloured icons and the Genius sidebar. And I am using the later.
There is still a Genius icon in the lower right status bar but it is greyed out.
For me it is only greyed out for songs that had not enough related songs to form a Genius playlist (this behaviour seems the same in 10.0 and 10.0.1).
It's activated if you select a song. It just takes you to a Genius playlist though.
Alternative?
So what can we use instead of iTunes?

Ditto here. This new version sounds like a nightmare and there is nothing to make me want to upgrade. Besides, I [eschew] social networking [apps].
I think the one positive aspect from this update is the problem I was having with the separate player window appearing whenever I played a certain album seems to have ben fixed.

There is still a very limited Genius 'sidebar' in the Store. In the Store, click on Genius Recommendations under Quick Links. You'll get about half a dozen recommendations per genre, they are officially based on individual songs in your library but with maybe ten genres and six base songs per genre, you are now limited to about 60 base songs which is only a fraction of what was available before.
Ugh. Worst iTunes update.
Steve Jobs: QUIT SHOVING PING DOWN OUR THROATS. It sucks and I don't want it. Please stop embedding my updated iTunes with all this Ping junk that I can't even remove. I thought the whole point of Apple products was streamlined and ease of use? Now I'm spending the last half hour trying to fix was your update ruined. THANKS!

You can still go back to version 10.0, you can run 10.0 and 10.0.1 with the same library (not at the same time but you can switch back and forth). You only need get a copy of .app package for 10.0 and put it into the Dock. That brings back the Genius sidebar.
I heard a lot of people wanting something like ping over the years. Now that you have it you don't want it? Also no one is forcing you to use it.
iTunes 10.0.1 changes the the cmd-R "Reveal in Finder" keyboard shortcut to shift-cmd-R, giving cmd-R to "Refresh Page" in the iTunes Store. OK, consistent with Safari, but is there a frequent need to refresh an iTunes store page?
I'll retrain myself after a decade of motor memory, as I use Reveal in Finder frequently.
